badtoyz build thread.

ill keep that in mind for next time.

question about the drc system. are the left and right sides separated from each other? if I have to recharge would it be just one side. the line on the passenger side isn’t as bad as the driver side, I was gonna take it off so I don’t damage it seeing as the system is already open but if it will save me money on the recharge then ill leave it on. theres 2 cans so am I correct in thinking one is for the right and one for the left?

I thought they were diagonally linked

Correct

I see, so front right - rear left and vice versa? so I can still save some money if I only opened the one line because there wont be any need to refill the opposite side?

I’m not sure man, the bentley doesn’t give a very good description of the system.

FYI, if you do disconnect them, it’s 13mm and use a flare nut wrench…a regular open end may round the edges and those lines are like $250 a piece. A line is as much or more than the shock itself!

lol the dealership wants 500 for a line but told me if they install it he’ll give me 15 percent off lmao. im thinking maybe I should just remove the right side so I don’t break it. a bit of extra labour will likely be cheaper than replacing another line. I cant believe the price. its a damn flex line. im tempted to make one at work.

Some pics I found on the interweb…

Thanks data!

My dealer wanted $250 to service/refill the system
Plus I needed a line
Plus I needed a rear strut (leaking)
That was my reason for trying out the STs for $740, 91gl…owner of Prime Motoring in NJ has a few RS4s running them with good reviews so I figured why not. I’m kinda happy about that decision considering I just ordered a $2k clutch package…haha

I was quoted 2 hours labour for the recharge. so $230 at Crosby VW here in Kitchener. I wanted to keep the drc system but if it ever causes me issues it will be gone.

so quick update. the right side pinch bolt is now out and was just as troublesome as the left. the right side now has the perch and spring installed and done until I get the ball joints and tie rod.

on the left side I decided to just remove the drc flex line before it got damaged, its showing signs of wear and corrosion in the same places as the left side but not as bad so im reusing it.

mirrors are put back together and reinstalled on the car but im having trouble getting the window stripping back over the black triangle piece. sar recommended some plastic trim tools which I don’t have so ill have to get some. I tried everything in my arsenal but no luck.

I spoke with Crosby vw again today and the manager said that he could give me the single drc line for 400 and if they installed it he would give me the 15 percent off the part bringing it to 340. ordering online with shipping makes the line 350 so im just gonna let them do it. so im looking at 340+230+170 for an alignment. I may go elsewhere for the alignment though.

*note to anyone reading this looking to tackle this job.

  1. if I had to do it again I wouldn’t even try to do this with the drc lines still attached. for the 2 hours labour it costs to recharge the system just take them off instead of risking damage.

  2. if you live in a salt state/province expect the pinch bolt to be seized, these cars are now 7-8 years old. torches are a MUST. u can get away without a compressor but I highly recommend having one. or you can order the ball joint kit I did and also buy a new knuckle, this way everythings new and no hammering/heating.

Re-install everything coated with Anti-seize!

Ready to see the results!!

This x2

oh buddy im gonna buy a fucking barrel of that shit and dip entire parts in it lol.

soon as this things back on the ground its getting washed and a ton of pics will be posted. im hoping to get some more with the leaves changing but everythings becoming pretty bare around my place.

I got the trim back over the triangle pieces but I left a line in it. I used a shit ton of lube and a plastic tool used for windshield installs but it still kinda fucked it up. a bit of polish may do the trick.

I need to see better pictures of those mirrors. Bad angles on what could potentially be a stunning rattle can job!

they do look really good. im gonna have to get them out in the sun for a decent pic, right now theyre on the car and covered in lube from trying to get the rubbers back over them. my parts should be in by the end of the week hopefully I can get her back on the ground and pics up by the weekend or early next week.

Wait, what?? Rubbers?? What are you doing with these mirrors?? :-\ J/K
