best...day....ever..

2005 avant 6 speed, 224000kms

Had JHM intermediate kit, check valves, clutch, valve cover gaskets, rear main seal installed and have about 1200kms since being done. Today was driving it and got a PO011 code and had a friend give it a scan and here is what came up.

thanks Mike! I’m looking for advice from the S4 guru’s on whether this is a smoking gun to an electronic cam adjuster assembly being dead or possibly something else?

well your in the right place. First check the motor module for codes. It looks like one of the adjusters isnt working. If you can check for codes that might eliminate some of the issues. start with that and we can walk you through the rest of the steps to fix whatever might be going on

These were his old codes Aside from the new one for the cam adjuster. (Posting on behalf of Andrew)

Thank you sir, trying to post from this POS phone is driving me nuts. I have a small exhaust manifold leak causing the lean fault i believe.

you get a code for the adjustment failure I would assume. Are you getting any noises at idle. Try unplugging the sensor on the side of the error and see if you get any different codes. That should help tell if there is bigger issues

I stopped and grabbed my generic reader at my parents place about a mile up the road from my house yesterday afternoon. I had cleared all the codes and then drove home, the CEL didn’t come back but the car was still running as if it was being held back. My friend came over with his VCDS last night and we scanned it and no fault codes came up, we started the car and drove it down my driveway and it showed what you see above with the 0.0 actual. We did not drive it any further to see if the CEL would come back since i was concerned with damage.

Is it ok for me to drive the car to see if any more faults come back or just unplug and then idle it to see if I get anything? I am super paranoid about causing any damage to this engine lol.

At idle it has always had a very very minimal what felt like a miss, just a really small vibration you can feel in your seat. It never seemed noticeable on the tach. I never really looked into it with vagcom, before doing the timing equipment I just blamed it on the mechanical adjusters as that seemed like a common symptom.

I don’t have any noises at idle, it seems to idle the same as it always has but as soon as you put load on it then you feel it being held back.

I personally don’t have VCDS so I’m going to order up a cable and laptop this week when I come off nights at work. I know it is virtually impossible to fix these cars without it, also this is the first time jumping into fixing this thing so some of my questions will likely seem like I’m dumb as shit lol.

I appreciate your patience and it may seem like I am taking forever to reply but I’m heading into a 2 month shutdown at work and my gf is 34 weeks preggo so times spread thin.

Andrew

and just for confirmation the codes I had when I first initially scanned the car with my generic reader yesterday were:

PO011
P2097
P2098
PO011
P2097
P2181
P2098

all this and your vagcom took a shit too…

It was unplugged when I took the picture lol

Very small update, I had to move the car out of the garage to get the lawn tractor out and it had a flashing cel and a PO304 code. Hoping to do some troubleshooting this weekend.

Bringing this back from the dead, finally things have calmed down a bit at work and with my newborn daughter. Spent a few evenings this past week with a good buddy removing the engine and trans from the car.

I now see why everyone says these cars are a pain to work on lol so little room to do anything.

So first off we were able to figure out one of my 02 sensor faults, found a broken/chaffed wire going to the sensor. Next on the list of damaged parts is the vacuum regulator on the front of the engine, found that this may have been affecting the linkage for the intake manifold. Also found a flex joint in pretty bad shape so planning on doing FI downpipes and catback.

Noticed a bunch of worn out things like shifter bushings, engine mounts and trans mount and I have a ton of cleaning to do above all else.

I can tell this will be a long road but looking forward to getting all the bugs worked out.

My first question that I havent been able to find an answer to yet is whether you can remove the electronic solenoid from the engine without having the specialty tools for locking the timing. I am assuming all the solenoids do is allow oil to pass when needed.

Its good to see your back at it. The motor and all the work can be intimidating just make sure to take your time everything should fall into place. As for the electronic solenoid. As long as its the electronic part there should be no issue removing it. I would wait and just check it when you pull the mechanical units still. It kinda makes it eaiser. You will see what I mean when you get more into it

Sounds good, i havent ordered the tools yet so was going to try and do some early testing to see. I’m going to be replacing both electrical adjusters as the mechanical parts are all brand new, hopefully it didn’t mess with them but I guess I’ll find out soon enough lol. Thank you for your help!

Jon told me he has the timing tools needed, drop him a line, I doubt he would mind lending them to you. He might even finish the job for you for a sack of sussex’s finest.

Weird, he told me he didn’t have them lol I’ll have to ask again…

I’ve spent majority of the time so far cleaning, everything seems to have a pretty healthy coating of dirt and oil. I like to have things as clean as possible before taking any important covers off and opening up the engine to avoid contamination.

Just ordered up a bunch of stuff from JHM and through my friend at Audi. List so far is:

JHM stuff:
034 street density engine mounts and trans mount
JHM auto tensioner kit
JHM L/W flywheel and clutch
JHM L/W crank pulley
JHM piggie pipes
034 Snub mount and bracket
JHM sec air delete plates
Timing tools

OEM stuff:
Coilpacks
plugs
exhaust manifold gaskets
intake manifold gaskets
coolant temp sensor
crank sensors
knock sensors
cam position sensors
valve cover gaskets
electronic cam adjusters
02 sensors
thermostat
clutch slave

I’m sure there are some things i’m forgetting but I’ll pick them up as I go along. Here are some pics of progress.
