OMFG that is rediclous. Where are you located. Maybe we can help you find a good indy shop or independent to help do the swap. Some guys might be able to help do the swap without pulling the motor. I think I read that jimmyBones did that.
The dealership is obviously not concerned about being compeditive. The good news is that is a rare thing to have happen. Still that is just mind blowing keep us posted.
I’m in San Antonio Texas , if jimmy bones can do it without pulling the motor then I’m definitely all ears! Otherwise this thing is getting traded in fog something with a warranty
I was informed of this thread yesterday and got a chance to look a few things up this morning.
According to the labor times in my version of Elsaweb for a 2008 S6 V10 it does say that the engine has to come out but when I went through the repair details it doesn’t say anything about it. So the dealership is likely going off the labor times suggested by Audi like they are supposed to. This wouldn’t be the first time that the repair instructions leave something out that the labor times is quoted correctly for but I don’t know that for sure yet.
My concern is that the lower bolt that goes up from the bottom of the power steering rack and pinion into the cowl area is basically unreachable with the engine in the car. The repair manual does mention taking a heat shield off on the driver’s side of the engine compartment behind the engine, probably to gain access to that bolt. That bottom power steering rack and pinion bolt is a PITA on most Audis with this pre-B8 style located rack and pinion. To give you a better idea of what I am talking about here is a picture from a quick search that I did and I found this picture of a power steering rack and pinion that someone took with their engine out and the bolt in question has a white arrow pointing towards it.
I would really need to see on a C6 S6 from the driver’s side of the car this region of the car with the black plastic cover removed that goes around the rack and pinion dust boot to know if there is enough room to get the lower power steering bolt out without removing the engine. The below picture is from a B5 but it illustrates my point very well.
If there is enough room to get that lower bolt out then the rack and pinion replacement should be fairly straight forward just like any other pre-B8 power steering rack and pinion replacement.
Give this guy a shot. I bought one about a year ago and it works. Granted the steering wheel controls are a little clunky in order to browse through your music.
How are you doing on the HowTo for this mod? My MMI just died—I got flooded in the front left (pass) footwell during a torrential downpour. Now the MMI tried to boot, when I start the car, but I get a black screen after a few secs and the MMI buttons no longer light up.
Someone suggested that there was a MMI main unit or some other electronic under the pass side carpet. Do you know anything about this?
If I can’t get it fixed easily, I want to do your 3G mod.
