Boom! The record is mine again…

So had no plans to race today… Actually Glenn wanted to come down and I told him the car was not in running conditions since I still had the e85 tune but no hpfp as I sent it back to APR… I was basically planning for next year when APR asked late yesterday if I was ready for a new tune and new tcu tune… Fuck yeah I am! I immediately emailed Glenn and let him know but he couldn’t make it… So we got the car flashed last night and I ran through all the E85 and put in race gas… Well then I woke up and it was snowing… lol However, it ended quickly and dried up as well as not hitting Thompson so I called and yep they were open… There was literally 10-20 cars there… lol They made an annoucement that only slick cars could use the right lane and then they notcied me and they then repeated only slick cars in the right lane and the fast Audi could use it also… I lol’ed…

My Car: 2010 Audi S4 - DSG with sports dif, 9,680 miles, 3/8 tank of gas, tools and spare removed.

Mods: APR tune, APR DSG tune with LC disabled, APR pulley, JHM overdrive crank pulley, LFC’s, miltek non-res exhaust, custom intake, APR CPS, front and rear sways, Alu Kruez, Brembo BBK, JHM LW rear rotors, BBS CHR’s, tire pressure 32F 28R

Conditions: 41F, 30.08BP, and 38% humidity for a DA of 180

So the first two passes I wheel hopped bad as the track was cold and the tires weren’t warm… I warmed them coming back each time so they finally had some heat in them… Below are the best two runs… I’ll be honest the car shifted horribly… I thought there is NO way in hell I’m setting the record today… I’ve already traded emails with APR and they’re determined to get the dsg tune right… I think they realize as I do that this is a 11.3x car with proper shifts … I improved on the front of the track and regressed on the back half… My traps and back half times are off and IMO it’s the shifts…

60 ft - 1.5773 How about that! That’s a bad ass 60ft time on street tires and full weight!
330 ft - 4.6965
1/8 - 7.3086
1/8 - 93.25
1000 - 9.5593
1/4 - 11.4557
1/4 - 119.56

60 ft - 1.6032
330 ft - 4.7354
1/8 - 7.3356
1/8 - 94.62
1000 - 9.5636
1/4 - 11.4500
1/4 - 119.56

So 11.4500 as a best for this year… Happy with that but dissappointed as I KNOW the car has another tenth or more in et in it… Really happy with the short times… Just need to put it all together… Really looking forward to 2016!

I’ll host the gopros and post them… I also have logs from all the passes if anyone is interested…

Which brings me to the below… I may actually address this on vendorzine but not sure, so I thought I’d comment here…
Congrats sir!

For anyone curious, his car runs 100% off the shelf performance files. It’s the same upgrade that every single other GIAC tuned Stage 2 (2013) S4 gets. [up]
I’m pretty certain this was aimed at APR and I… I’ll be honest this is really a funny point to make… You’re right Austin, I run and have run many beta files that APR has created. Almost all of these have resulted in changes in APR’s production software to improve the tune for everyone as these changes trickle down to production upgrades. They’ll be offering a 2 pulley file soon, how about GIAC? E85 tune? APR will… This has been done at my risk all along and I have paid for EVERY part APR has ever supplied me with. It’s really a shame that you and your company doesn’t offer the same respect to folks like Jeff and Pete given they are all about making you guys look good and test the shit out of their cars like I do… I’m glad to know I picked a tuner who is open to feedback, critique/criticism, and who is willing to continouly improve their tune. It’s a shame you guys don’t have that same approach…

I also want to thank the guys at APR again! Cars not where I want it nor where they want it but they’re determined to get it right… GO APR!

Oh and Saki, I’ll PM you my address… Looking forward to my 7-up!

Nice run… Barely got us, such a tight race…

Any reason ur trap dropped so much since your last track visit?

Making me second think even bothering with a crank pulley…

My 11.49 was full interior, street tires with a 1.7 60’. Your killing me on 60’ but ET is only .04 seconds off from my full interior run.

Wish we could meet up, we have to make it happen in 16’ at Atco!

Nice work Ron. Pretty cool to see this go back and forth.

Weren’t you going to find where I said that first?

Can’t remember if you did.

The special thanks to apr is funny. ‘thanks for not being able to do your job, and for selling a crap, u finished product that makes me slower’.

One thing is making your car faster this fall, and that is a jhm overdrive pulley. You’re setting records with it DESPITE the $1000 Apr TCU file. Maybe TCU stands for ‘transmission confusion unit’ as they’ve managed to confuse a fantastic performing transmission.

Frustrating to watch. I don’t know how much they’d need to pay me to keep that thing on my car while they fuck around and pretend to know what they’re doing.

Pete, 3-4 and 4-5 shifting is what killed the overall ET and trap compared to where I was at the 1/8th… Let me get some vids up and you’ll see, I literally thought no way were these record passes… I’m game to meet as it would be a great time… Maybe a central/neutral location with more folks attending?

Josh, Thanks man! Yeah, I agree it’s fun to have the competition… Just waiting for Jeff to drop a bomb on all of us…

Haha. Yeah, I feel like Jeff is hidden away somewhere in a lab concocting something. Looking forward to see what all three of you have in store for next year.

Right on Ron, glad the car is back in action! Badass 60 for sure. Shifts must be hurting you big time since your trap is lower than usual. Interested to see the go pro footage. I love the “fast audi” announcement too, go APR!

You have a TCU thay works. He does not. Simple.

But rethink the crank pulley all you want…looks like you’ll both be fighting it out for hundredths to be second place soon.

Yeah my pops DSG works flawlessly. I think he just needs better tires and maybe slightly lighter wheels to help in the 60’ catagory.

Saki what’s your opinion on the crank pulley? Do you think it’s worth it? Between getting reflashed, labor to install it and the actual JHM pulley itself it’ll prob cost close to 1k. If it was my car I would have given it a shot but my pops is not 100% sold on spending 1k on something that doesn’t seem to be making all that of a different at this point.

From the GIAC logs I’ve seen, I don’t think you’d need to get reflashed- at least not for the boost portion of it. APR was requesting right at 2300 hPa max (and lower in some cases), and with both pulleys the car would make over that and bypass. GIAC appears to already request a lot more than what is even possible (2600 hPa), so you wouldn’t bypass boost for that reason. Jeff did have some bypass in his logs, but I don’t think it was for that reason (he’d didn’t log specified pressure, so can’t say for sure). There are very possibly other changes GIAC could make to help with the pulley, but that would probably take some work. As far as I know, all APR did on Ron’s tune is up the specified pressure value.

Based on the times and logs we have seen, there is definitely a few PSI of boost to be had, and a few MPH in trap if you are really trying to max things out. There are diminishing returns at some point, so you don’t get the full effect of what you would with the smaller S/C pulley. Other things seemed to get maxed out along the way, but regardless, there is an increase in boost and airflow which can’t hurt. Jeff and Ron both had some pretty awesome looking logs in those regards.

Nice to see you run…but I’ll call a spade a spade

DSG tune has been a huge fail…they are probably still selling that shit to the morons who don’t need it in the pre-rpm limit cars.
E85 was also a fail so far

The only thing that has really contributed to your car going faster this year is the JHM pulley and APR tweaking your file so it didn’t bleed the extra boost.

I just don’t really get it…

records are getting traded fast and furious!

Big congrats, love seeing the records going back & forth!

awesome to you both actually!

Congrats Ron! With how bad it is shifting, I see 11.3x if APR ever can get if fixed.

those 2 times are the closest two times I’ve ever seen from any car ever. If the APR TCU really is that crap, at least it’s consistently crap!

The MPH is identical, and the ET is within a few THOUSANDTHS of a second. That’s unreal.

it’s very good question. If I owned a B8 I would probably do it since the stock part has shown that it’s prone to an early death. I would also do it becaause this is a way to buy a JHM tune and go stage 2.

If I already had GIAC or APR, I’d maybe do it based on the maintenance thing alone, but for the extra performance, that’s a tough one. Is GIAC supporting it? Is APR? i.e. will they write you a tune with a boost request strong enough for 2 pulleys? I’d suggest they may or may not so that would be a determinant if performance was your goal.

For $500 it’s steep as a prevenntative maintenance item. However when it does that, plus allows you to pick up 20-30 hp (if that’s accurate) that’s pretty compelling. Especially when you consider that you pick up similar power from the stage 2 bump…or from intake and LW parts (performance wise).

we have seen his car a couple times in great conditions and it hasn’t been at or near record levels performance wise. Not sure why.

Looks like maybe his 2 pulley system allowed him to make more boost in the less dense summer air, but perhaps his GIAC is bleeding off quite a bit now that the winter is here. We’ve seen the cars make as much as 2-3 PSI more in the cold weather than in the summer. Perhaps that’s just enough to cross him into bleedoff so he is kind of hitting a wall.

We met him at Milan. Super nice guy.

The logs from Jeff’s car with the pulley did show him bypassing a decent amount of boost (nothing crazy, but definitely enough to slow it down a tenth or two). It’s not exactly clear why though, or if it does this all the time. The particular log I saw didn’t log specified pressure/boost. The GIAC cars I have logged locally had specified pressure/boost values that were way more than the car is capable of (it would exceed the 2.5 bar map sensor), so in general I would expect a GIAC tune to bypass due to the amount of boost alone.
