C5 allroad

What that sucks. The weak gear is the 4 5 in those transmissions. the 6hp is a monster transmission the 5hp kinda sucks. I think a swap would be very cool due to the fact that there are no 6speed v8 allroads. I know its your money but if you cant put a 6hp automatic in the car I would do the 6speed conversion. its already a spectacular build that would make it epic. Sorry to hear about the set back but maybe its a silver lineing.

Money! Limiting factor. I really am beside myself frankly. I get stuff happens when aging components are pushed to limits but my car had a working AC and a fully functioning transmission before, now it doesnt. Venting here is all.

If/when the decision is made, I will opt for a 6mt swap over 6hp auto. Both require new rear end apparently. Honestly would likely opt to just rebuild existing 5hp in there.

A 6 speed m/t swap would be epic. That is definitely a tough decision.

I know at this point so close to getting the car back you are going to want to scream at these hang ups. I know its not going to help you feel better. But I have helped two guys just this year replace there AC units. Those things are crap. The transmission is one of those things thats hard to get. Some transmissions take a beating and then just die. I never liked the 5hp. My old car I gave to a family member and the transmission ran great for years and one day the dam thing wouldnt make it through 1st or 2nd. The hub went bad but I guess thats normal

True…like I said, I get aging components fail under even normal conditions. Throw mods and power at them and well that is just asking for this. I get it, just kind of sucks. Simple as that. I really just want to get to enjoy my car again. Will get to soon enough.

And to top it off this happened yesterday

Idiot coworker backed into my c4 s4 with work trailer. Yay!

hopefully they don’t browse the site lol

Because “idiot coworker”?

Hey I was telling you over on AZ Avant section about the S4 transmissions I have…I’ve actually got a 6MT and a TIP trans if it turns out keeping an auto-box is easier. I also have the rear diffs for both, altho no prop shafts as they were both dented and had bad end joints. If any of this helps let me know

Thanks much! We will see how everything shakes out and very well maybe take you up on your help. Thanks for reaching out!

So, what is the consensus on swapping in a 6hp tip? Pros / cons. Thanks for any and all input

If its possible to put the 6hp in. Its a great transmission. I have been in love with mine. After the JHM touch its a dream to drive. I still like the fun of a manual car but after the 6hp JHM tune. I really dont miss a manual transmission and welcome the auto. Performance wise JHM has closed the gap on big performance with there stage 1 automatic S4 going almost into the 11 sec range.

I think the big challenge is going to be will the current body wires work or how hard would it be to swap in new wires and connect into the other body wires.

If its possible to swap in the 6hp over rebuild the 5hp I say you will be happy the 5hp took a dump on you.

Thanks for your insight as always. Hopefully we come up with a reasonable solution. Mean time, good old reliable to cart us around. First audi I bought and frankly the least pita…and it is a pita in its own right. Damn cars

Still gets rock star treatment parked far away from idiots

So it looks like prohect s/c allroad is now project 6mt s/c allroad. Jeezus this spun out of control fast!

3R or 5R clutch? I frankly am fine with a little stiffer engagement and save a few bucks by going 5R over 3R. I dont love the kevlar material over ceramic/metallic though. Any insight/caveats?

Well this is a real project now. lol. The b6 and b7 manual transmissions are good shifting transmissions.

The 5R seems to have been getting great reviews. The big debate is life of the clutch. The more harsh the material the quicker it will ware down. It will grip and hold power quicker thus giving you quicker acceleration. So it really is about life span and use

I’m not what I would consider hard on clutches.

I vote 3R

I’m also in the 3R vs. 5R debate myself. I might be leaning toward the 5R tho. Not super reassuring seeing a stg4 and 3R fuse to the FW.

I like a silver B5 with BBS CH. Always a great look.

fusing a clutch to a flywheel generally means high rpms clutch slipping by the operator on gear engagement. What was that picture from?

there was a guy in the B5 world or B6 world (can’t remember) who did this to his car a few years ago. He insisted he didn’t do anything etc. It finally came out that he had a full car load, and was slipping it like crazy trying to parallel park, then launched it to be cool. it fused. He steadfastly denied it up until there, then disappeared.

He was shown how to fix it and the car was just fine after. Most people just take it to a mechanic and get screwed for a new clutch/flywheel + labour.

With proper driving technique you are not going to fuse the disc.
