Clutch question

To be honest, when I got the new “civilized” tune, I was disappointed. I had really gotten used to the extreme sensitivity of the previous tune to the point where this new tune’s lack of throttle response is annoying me lol. I don’t know whether the next one will be sensitive again or stay this way. JHM mentioned to me that they’ll send out a new tune once everyone’s confirmed the current tune is working without any issues so I hope everyone’s gotten back to them by now and that everything is good so that they can continue with a more aggressive tune. I’m so down in power with this tune that it’s driving me insane.

As for the slave cylinder, my mechanic went with an aftermarket one (don’t remember the name) but it wasn’t all metal. Uses the same hookups, etc. but it’s supposed to be sturdier. I’m not holding my breath that this will fix the problem with my luck recently but one can hope.

how many JHM supercharged B6 cars aer there?
how many B7s?
how many bastards?
what’s the breakdown of manual vs. tip?

would love that data

How many bastards??

The 2005.5 vintage. Look like B7s but more like B6s on the inside eg 2:1 rotten diff.

I went with the OEM parts in both cases. I thought about the metal one, but I couldn’t see any major advantage to it. Same with the line to the master since it is not in a location where it is heavily impacted by heat.

I changed out the master cylinder. You have to block off the rubber line to prevent losing a bunch of fluid once it is disconnected from the master, but overall the job is pretty straight forward.

you mean 2:1 better launching diff

launching an RS4 well is tough. 4.11 and all that torque heaing to the rears equals spin city most times if you drop it from even as low as 3000. The best technique for best launch is to sort of slip it slightly but that’s a bit dangerous as you can hurt your setup.

put wider tires on the back then and watch that bitch SQUAT

yeah, I should. George’s car looked pretty good at the strip with 275

I’m looking for a new set of summers, but can’t find 275.30.19 in ANYTHING on tirerack. Weird.

I was going to grab some 265.30.19 but that’s a bit small (25.3" vs. 26" stock size). I was then thinking about 265.35.19 but that would be 0.3" bigger than stock diameter, effectively lifting the car a bit.

Any lines on 275.30.19 95Y or 96Y or 98Y…and XL?

I noticed this quite a bit when I tested bigger backs.

how’s it work out for you justincredible?

you need to hit Lapeer this week while it’s still cold. Go do some damage!

How many guys have a clutch problem? Are they all supercharged cars? What aftermarket parts are on each car? Lets have a concise list of what’s what?

I run the LOBA motorsport 650+ clutch feels a little heavier than oem and bites first gear sharply! Based on Sachs but redesigned by LOBA as they work together it’s amazing. It’s lighter than the previous Sachs clutch that exploded on me! They can design stronger versions I’m 99% sure there’s an Mtm car that runs the LOBA twin plate 1000nm clutch. I can highly recommend them

From what I understood (not including any UK guys), Maddog, SpeedETC and myself all experienced a clutch issue within a 24 hour period.
2 were JHM stage 4 and one was JHM stage 3. All three had a JHM supercharger (mine was on a mid-level tune, estimating about 420/430hp or so).

SpeedETC ended up replacing everything himself, one component at a time and the problem wasn’t fully fixed until he finally replaced the throw-out bearing. I don’t know what Maddog’s situation is at this time. I’m getting my slave cylinder replaced (hopefully today) so I should know shortly whether that fixed the problem or whether it’s something else like in Speed’s case. Maddog’s gut feeling is that it’s hydraulic related and he said he’ll investigate that first. Will update this thread once I know whether the slave cylinder change worked or not on my car.

also be clear on a couple of things

  1. you guys drive B6/7 S4s, horsepower drives a B8 S5. Completely different everything.

  2. you guys are talking about a complelely different problem than horsepower (you guys had a clutch sticking after going WOT, while he couldn’t get in a couple of gears)

I don’t have a supercharger, but when I first got my JHM tune (with the sharper throttle response) I would find myself giving to much gas too early during clutch engagement and my clutch pedal would not come all the way up for a moment. Now that I am more used to it, and release the clutch pedal at a faster rate before getting on the gas, I have never had the problem occur again. (talking about hard starts or shifts, not casual driving)

How many have a light weight flywheel and no dmf?

everyone. I don’t think anyone doesn’t get the JHM LWFW when they get the clutch. It frees up about 13 lbs of rotating mass. Not a crazy amount more money either, and the old B6 S4 flywheel was so shit (some of them had a propensity to fail, seperated causing vibrations and potential bellhousing damage), you can’t wait to get it out of there as it is.

Back on this OP subject my JHM Stg 3 clutch/ LWFW did the same thing the other day on the highway on my 07 RS4… driving along pushed the peddle down and it stuck to the floor, popped it up with my foot and off I went. Have not replicated it since but I have noticed it takes a LOT of force to shift into gears now… before it was an easy flick/throw. Now its a very hard push/pull. Also getting a lot more vibrations on the steering wheel/shifter so I’m thinking something is not right… Could that just be the LWFW that I am not used to? Whatever it is I don’t like it and would have a hard time believing this is supposed to be normal.

the 07 cars had a TSB for that issue (RS4s)

also the RS4 is real easy to be riding the clutch while giving throttle (weird feeling) which will cause that. Be sure that’s not your problem. You said you were driving along, while the OP was hooning his car when this happened.

You reallly have to be OFF the clutch when you’re ON the throttle on these cars because you’ll glaze it real quick and it’ll stick. My stock 08 RS4 has done this a couple of times. All the same symptoms…sticks down (only a couple of inches)…or it pops up hard and is extra stiff next time going down. Always my bad driving that caused it.

Yeah i notice the shifting becoming harder the higher the RPMs go. I just spoke with JHM and they were thinking it could be lines needing to be bleed. Who knows, I am always off the clutch when i get on it, no launching or anything of that sort, I finally smelled what burning clutch smells like a few days ago when I let my idiot friend drive the car, it f*cking stinks. Now that I think of it, its all kinda happening after he drove it.
