Compugeek's build/resurrection

so, here’s the short story;

Decided an S6 ticked all the boxes on my shopping list; luxobarge-like to replace the becomming impractical 2 door sportscoupe (2018 Cayman GT4), after looking at M5’s, M6’s, 750’s, Merc S-Class, a few AMG’s - nothing had the combination of traits the C6S6 offers. It didn’t hurt that the first S6 I test drove had a tune and exhaust. That V10 is intoxicating. After living through the pain of ownership of not one, but two BMW V10s, I was pleasantly surprised to find out the S6 is practically bombproof with regards to longblock and drivetrain. Sadly, many appeared to succumb to maintenance issues anywhere from 55k to 100k miles… More research, more googlez lead me to the infodump; F me you guys are rockstars for documenting this platform! Shout out’s to v8a6, CV, Justin, c.scott and all the other owners contributing in that thread!

Realized I didn’t necessarily want a low(er) mileage S6, since anything below 50k miles would be ridiculously rare, and my budget (mainly the profit from the Cayman sale) of $20k would be better spent finding a lower priced and higher mileage S6 than trying to chase after a cream puff since any S6 purchased would need essentially the same work items. Found a 123k mile vehicle out of state (eek!), that had a laundry list of recent receipts, mostly undocumented provenance and iffy chances that the problems being chased by said recent receipts were resolved.

Items declared to be replaced/work recently performed; both head gaskets replaced, now/current SKU intake installed, full set of plugs, coils AND injectors. No mention of carbon cleaning. No mention of leaks. Car passes “ready” check. No CELs.

So. Here’s the “master list” of issues as delivered 2 weeks ago;
4 tires on the car, no two alike.
passenger fender gouged down to bare metal at the crown of the wheel arch, passenger side
water damage driver’s side rear passenger seat
multiple carbon trim pieces cracked/broken
multiple switches worn/broken/black worn off at edges.
18 codes in ECU
TPMS light on, returns to on even after reset
Oil leak from unknown location
AMI & 6disk changer in glovebox, however neither one recognized by MMI

Shopping list;
Wheels
Tires
TPMS
alignment
Exhaust
Tune
LW Brakes
Upgraded SS brake lines
pads
MMI update
Nav update
interior lights converted to LED
suspension arm/bushing refresh
fix shipping/body damage/missing badges
deglaze headlights.
intake phenolic spacers
LW crank pulley
catless headers

Quite the list! NFI how deep into the $20k pile I am at this point honestly, but here’s the status of the list;
Wheels - ordered, installed thurs
Tires - as above
TPMS - as above
alignment - ayup…
Exhaust - ordered from JHM - however long it takes to build 'em (January/fabruary 2017?! cry)
Tune - ordered; possible flash this weekend
LW Brakes - not yet
Upgraded SS brake lines - not until rotors and pads
pads - not until rotors
MMI update - ordered off eBay, also have ISOs of questionable origin
Nav update - ordered off ebay, 2016 update in transit
interior lights converted to LED - deAutoKey kit installed - footwells, puddles, domes, gloveboxk, trunk, reverse lights. HUGE difference.
suspension arm/bushing refresh - Whole front suspension for $600?? OK. On the way
fix shipping/body damage/missing badges - still haggling with shippers to cover one of the three quotes for repair
deglaze headlights. - took all of 10min with water and a plastic scraper.
intake phenolic spacers - ordered - installed this weekend
LW crank pulley - on hold
catless headers - on hold

Silver lining; NO engine or drivetrain related codes at all! All codes that are current are related to stuff like battery not being properly coded (7 different codes for just the battery!), faulty driver’s seat airbag sensor, MMI can’t find media player, etc.

First impressions; there is no engine not at all with a stock exhaust. Some burly induction noise, but for the most part, the trans is louder than the exhaust :stuck_out_tongue: Handling is - OK. Suspension as a whole just feels tired. Understandable for the miles. Was trying to reserve judgement until there were at least 4 matching tires on the car, but the full set of arms and bushings for the front wasn’t too pricey. Power; man is this thing ridiculously smooth. Man is this mileage bad! Trip computer says 17.9mpg on my 11mile commute. Almost exactly 10mpg less than I’m used to. Car doesn’t feel quick at all, but once it’s in 3rd man it feels like warp speed! Hopefully the tune will wake it up and the catback will produce more Grins Per Mile.

Pics coming of the before & afters.

That is awesome! I went the same route, going with a higher mileage example as my project base car, and then put the money saved towards replacing most of the wear and tear related items with new. You end up with a car with all new parts, many of them aftermarket upgrades.

Looking forward to updates and pics!!!

edit 2015 GT4 - you were a big inspiration v8a6! Thanks for your posting of all the info - I’m positive it’ll help others find their way!

What’s the deal with these diverter plates? I’m guessing the metal valves in the intake divert the air to one side of the intake; I kindof understand the theory of promoting combustion chamber swirl upstream like this in an MPI situation to allow/promote fuel droplet atomization, but I wouldn’t think it’d be beneficial with DI? Obv I’m wrong or it wouldn’t be there, but was still surprised. I’ve seen the pics and all, but still one of the most complex intakes I’ve worked with. Kindof surprised that the deposits and buildup aren’t more on one side than the other… is it intake reversion that’s responsible for these deposits? I’m guessing if it was PCV or related oil inhalation upstream it would be heavier on one side of these diverter plates than the other because of the flaps?

Those are the cold start and low speed tumble flaps. but the real code word for them should be called carbon magnets. They tend to really love carbon.

They work with the TQ flaps in the intake manifold and they act as a tq cut off for flow ontop of the other tumble duty. You mentioned that your getting the JHM tune so you can remove them as JHM stops the runner restriction on the intake from activating and killing tq. That is a big part of the extra tq down low. The JHM tune allows the runners to be all the way open so having the block off plates in there would just be a restriction.

So, new error code from the flaps being stuck closed. Looks like I’ve got a bad actuator…

Does the tune disable them completely, or just cycle them open? Right now, I can manually open them but as soon as ignition is cycled they go back to closed and stay there. I ran through the bank1 test in VAGCOM and the actuator “beeps” and acts like it’s trying to cycle but it doesn’t, it’ll only move from open to close. The fact I can move the linkage by hand as well leads me to believe it’s a bad actuator.

So…if the tune just disables it, I don’t really have to worry about replacing the actuator, but it if just cycles it open, then I probably do.

Is the motor shot or the linkage just moves freely.

Interesting question let us know what you find out. All I know is that the lower flaps are tuned out to stop killing tq down low.

I went ahead and ordered a new actuator. NO parts on this car are cheap! sheesh. Still waiting on loading the tune till the catback gets here. 6six just got his and it’s going to make the waiting even worse!

Service position for the front end as soon as the actuator arrives, along with the retrofit clear lenses, new HID 5k’s.

Is there any hard in loading the tune before the pipes get here? Also, I’m starting to really hate the gas pedal on this car; there’s at least 1/4" of travel before it does anything. Does the pedal use a magnet or potentiometer for TPS? Are there any adjustments available? Topic hasn’t come up before…

Isnt that the truth. NOTHING is cheap for these. When you look at the cost of domestic cars its like the cost x3.

As for the throttle. Thats something that will drive a true hotrodder crazy and the Audi throttle is bad. There is a fix for it and you have it. The JHM tune. I know a lot of us cheer for JHM but seriously that is another thing that they have added to the tune.

If you thought the throttle was bad on the S6 try it on the S4. The OEM throttle isnt 1:1 if you log the car the OEM tune opens the throttle more than your requesting but it has a delay and it takes more than throttle to get a car moving.

years ago before I got the JHM tune I logged a lot of other tunes. What I found is when tuners couldnt make more power they just gave you a hot pedal. It was kinda a scam. What I did find on JHM was that they kept the throttle rate same as stock but they removed the delay and let the camshafts move adjusted the intake manifold both upper and lower flaps gave the car a hotter spark and a better fuel raito. The result is instant throttle response. Instant to the point where you have to take a few days to really get a full understanding that you dont need to give the car as much throttle anymore.

Another thing they did was to adjust the pedal to almost the full range of the 5v sensor where the OEM tune only uses about 4.4v So there is a dead part of the throttle in the beggining on the OEM tune.

Whelp, work on the S6 is…delayed a little. Had this happen Friday;

Neighbor left a space heater on in their patio enclosed into a sunroom. Was apparently full of - stuff for lack of a better term. They were worried their lil chihuaha yippydogs would get cold. Proceeded to leave for the weekend. Fire started about 4hours later.

http://audirevolution.net/addons/albums/images/891109917.jpg

Estimated their patio burned for a good 45min to an hour before it was reported. Winds were gusting about 30mph from their house to ours. By the time FD was on scene, the majority of the interior was ablaze.

http://audirevolution.net/addons/albums/images/326788627.jpg

Heat was so intense, it shattered the outside panes of our windows facing their house. Apparently also melted coax wiring. Coax apparently carries a significant amount of current which caused shorts and also the eaves and flashing on fire. Fire very quickly spread into our attic. Our fire burned for maybe 20min.

http://audirevolution.net/addons/albums/images/517235972.jpg

managed to move a lot of the furniture out of the way, all of the pictures and artwork, but still lost some stuff in the living areas - mainly electronics. Found a house in the same neighborhood so it won’t disrupt the kid’s schedules at all. We’ll be moving, washing, cleaning through the new year. everything smells like nasty campfire!

http://audirevolution.net/addons/albums/images/46594756.jpg

http://audirevolution.net/addons/albums/images/400410376.jpg

We lost some things. And some stuff. It’s just that. Nothing truly valuable was lost and while this really puts a damper on Christmas, really it’s ranks a few notches above inconvenient. Could’ve been so much worse for all involved.

Moral; don’t leave a freaking space heater running when you’re not home! They likely would’ve had a very localized mess instead of a total loss if they were home.

Wow that’s crazy. Sorry to see and glad everyone is ok. Do they have to tear down your house or just the attic?

That’s crazy… Glad everyone is okay. Secretly hoping their dogs survived, but seems unlikely unless they found a way out somehow. Nonetheless, glad things worked out for the best compared to how it could’ve gone. Insurance FTW.

yup - both yippiedogs were found hiding in my garage… Lil pests! I’m glad they made it out too - no injuries at all with either fire.

Wow that’s terrible… glad you are okay!

Great. Yet another ray of light in the dark storm.

Duuude that suck, I’m glad you and your family made it out ok. Good luck with the restoration.
