I had this problem before the tune and after the tune… when it’s cold outside, my car seems to hate the first 5 minutes or so. The remedy for the feeling you’re getting is to put the car in ‘D’ then back in ‘N’ then back in ‘D’, holding the brake long enough for smooth engagement. That seems to make all the difference in the world. Hopefully it works for you too.
I’ll try that in the morning and let ya know!
I would suggest to not sit and let the SAI turn on the suggestion from audi in your owners manual mentions not letting the car sit and warm up or even sit idle. The Audi owners manual wants you to drive the car within 3 seconds of starting the car.
With the JHM tune I do the same thing. I let the car key up for a second before I start it but then I start and go. If you sit still for even a few seconds the JHM tune will kick on the warm up phase that is more agressive then stock. This is to make sure it helps the block warm up evenly so you dont get scored cylinder walls.
Since these blocks are all aluminum they need to be warmed up evenly letting the car idle when extreemly cold out side causes uneven warming of the blocks where the pistons heat up faster then the block does. Thats bad. If you can try to not let the SAI kick on and drive the car very quickly after starting the car.
This will not only keep the motor happy but it should help let the car run better in the cold weather.
Ok, I did that and…it didn’t stumble around. Can’t say it was happy - the car isn’t at all happy until it’s at least up to 1/4 temp. Definitely better though.
Great news. I found that even with the most picky FSI cars start them drive them right away at low to medium throttle with low load for a few min and they quickly warm up and run much much better.
These FSI cars HATE cold weather… the injectors dont like to run well for the first 4 or 5 min in really cold weather. But when you add in the SAI the cars just run with pure hate while its activated. This is why lots of people actually remove the SAI its an emmisions related item and some say it does more harm then good. From seeing how the cars run with the SAI on I completly agree with removing it. But again you can almost bypass the SAI if you just drive the car right away.
agreed - below 40f it’ll activate if left idling for more than 20sec or so, starting and immediately moving I hear it come on and then back off once it’s given some throttle.
Had planned on blocking it off and removing the pump, bypassing the throttle body water lines, etc - it’s just low on the priority list ATM.
This rattle in the top end is really starting to bother me; it’s quite loud and persistent. Could it be the timing chain tensioners?
Also, is it possible to bypass the oil separator and PCV entirely (using a catch can in it’s place)? I hate the nagging feeling like I’m sitting on a ticking timebomb with this clatter noise…
so the rattle thing was indeed piston knock/detonation. I must’ve gotten a really bad couple of tanks of gas - either contaminated, mismarked or the supply driver forgot to add the additive to the tank. In any event, the S6 is really sensitive to gasoline quality. Last 2 tanks have been 3 gallons of 101 and the rest 91 - so far, so good - mileage is back up in the high teens and the knock is gone.
There is still a rattling in the intake, just not what I was experiencing before thankfully. Hopefully I can defer the new intake purchase for a while longer…
In the meantime, I’ve developed consistent misfires on cyls 5, 8 and 10 with an intermittent on 6. Intake comes back off on the 18th for a full clean, 8 new injectors on the way, 10 new coils and plugs. Ordered an endoscope as well to look at the piston crowns while the plugs are pulled as well - will post pics. Noticed also that when she’s unhappy about fuel, she’s really unhappy; not ready codes all aver the place…
Still have a crack in the coolant tank that I’ve been too busy to fix. New tank has been here a while but finding the time to swap it out has been an issue So I’ll do it on the 18th along with the clear HID lenses, RS6 grill and a few other minor stuff I’ve been procrastinating on.
Yeah second what Justin said. Even when stock my previous s6 was much happier when given light to medium throttle first few mins to warm up even in very cold temps. My question is, does the SAI even help with anything or just reduce emissions during warm up on freezing days? Just when it’s warm make the car run like shit.
my guess is it’s a performance reducer and the only function is to heat up the cats quicker. It also pissed off the neighbors lol.
Sounds about right. Hopefully it pissed off some silent Prius and Tesla owners. Long livr the v10 haha.
Also, if you had self-restraint what type of mpg you think you could get on the hwy? When I had an exhaust, filters, and tuned up with obviously no ecu tunes since nothing was out but APR. I was getting 22-24 hwy with some fun, and 24-26 when i was pussy footing, which I thought was pretty strong.
All time high was 27.5 mpg but it was a lot of downhill :-p but I was still proud haha
All bullshit aside it’s more about smiles per gallon with these cars.
best I’ve seen was leaving it in the D and driving with a moonbeam underfoot @18.2mpg on an 11.4 surface street commute with 45mph zones and about 15 signals…on crap gasoline. Highway was about 19.3 before tune, 22.4 after tune. With a dirty intake, clogged PCV and obviously shit injectors.
I’ll let you know once I’ve got consistent fuel and fueling plus clean valves…
That was my guess. You should be around where I was at after you sort that.

something came today to keep the misfires at bay… So much money in such a small box. v10 life…
What about changing spark plugs, and put from R8?

Holy cow! You seriously can get 22.4 MPG on the highway with a JHM tune? The best I ever get is 18.9 on cruise control at 85 mph. 22 is almost respectable(!)
highways are F L A T around here. Also, the dash appears to average MPG over the last mile; is there anyway to change this to average over the full tank?
Yeah, I got around 22mpg on a recent ski/non-ski (too warm) trip… But sport mode kept calling me… an addiction to the sound… Dropped down to 16-17mpg…
OK, so here’s the list for tomorrow;
Intake and throttle body cleaning
carbon cleaning
new (sadly non flowmatched) injector install
new plugs
new coils
complete vac line inspection and cleanout
oil separator replacement
cracked expansion tank replacement
Headlight projector lenses replacement (morimotor clear, non fresnel)
RS6 grill swap
Trunk lip spoiler install
Still to go;
full suspension bushing refresh/control arm replacement
brake rotors, pads
transmission flush
broken interior bits fixed (rear center console, passenger door card)
That’s a good list!!
Are you doing the work or someone else?
