Current Supercharger options?

In the market for a S/C kit for the RS4 and read through the 12 pages of the S/C argument thread.

My thoughts and appreciate any feedback.

  • TTS performance and packaging looks impressive. CF blower design would retain the power delivery of the N/A. Downside pricing and dealer within reasonable driving distance from me. Not sure what the options are for remote tuning. Tried calling the TTS UK line Friday, but no one answered.
  • APR, performance is reasonable as well as pricing. S/C blower pretty much max’d for RS4 application.
  • JHM, not released. Pricing is expected to come in around $10k. Performance, no concrete data so far. Not a fan of the mounting solution. Factory air filter housing removed and exposing the air filter to the engine heat.
  • AMD, Pics of the manifold and blower looks nice, but no performance data and what the whole package looks like.

Would not mind spending the extra $$ for the TTS if a dealer was near me. APR is readily available in my area. Perhaps I’m talking myself into the APR setup, leave the some performance on the table and save some $$.

I think waiting is the answer here. There is an epic supercharger thread somewhere.

The APR kit as you say is limited. I’d go tts if it were feasible locally but it’s a UK only affair right now. Although didn’t some in the USA get one for an S5.

If the b6/7 JHM results are anything to go by, their rs4 version will be worth waiting for.

Sounds you have summed it up nicely. It depends if you want it right now or willing to wait like bango stated. I opted for the now option with APR since JHM just barely announced the b6 with the RS4 next and then maybe the S5.

APR is excellent. If you want to max out the RS4, don’t get APR. If you want a VFF car and a kit that will make your car a whole new animal, get the APR kit.

JHM kit is going to be excellent. They’re already testing it, and on a shakedown pass (2+ second 60 foot) their kit has already eclipsed the APR kit and is on the heels of the TTS kit. Unfortunately the car had a clutch problem so all they got was the roll out pass. It was I believe a beta race clutch (stage eleven) they were working on but not ideal for daily driving etc. Logging the RS4s they have with the supercharger on shows it to be quite a huge gap from an APR car. That’s stage 1 too…barely pushing the blower at all.

To that end, they have an APR supercharger kit for sale pre-owned if you’re interested. The owner wanted the JHM kit so he could run 10 second quarter mile times and scare small children. He had the APR kit for like a year or so. It was fantastic on his car, and went 11.8 @ 119 with it and JHM exhaust. Call them up, i’m sure it willl be a good deal. that goes for anyone really.

AMD kit looks pretty (so did PES) however they seem to be having problems…lots of delays. That’s the norm with these things though. The problem I would have with AMD is the problem APR had when they launched their kit 3 years ago…the tuning. EPL tunes for the AMD kit, and frankly EPL hasn’t proven they can tune their way out of a paper bag on turbo cars that originally came turbo charged. How they’ll manage tuning an RS4 with a supercharger, only time will tell…but I wouldn’t bet big on it. If it flops, don’t expect count vohn to ride in and rescue the tune for free like he did for APR. Don’t get me wrong, I hope AMD kicks ass with this thing and that EPL tunes it well…I’m just not holding my breath after all the other disappointing results from EPL tuned Audis over the years. It’ll dyno great though, so if you live your life one dyno sheet at a time, you will love it.

Both AMD and JHM are going to have the potential to have TTS like results (or better), but likely at half the price. That will be great for the platform.

Stage 11 clutch? They can’t seriously be calling it that.

Ive only driven an APR Stage 3 RS4 so I cannot comment on any other kit. The car was very fast, but not fast enough for me. If you want a reliable kit without maxing out your car you will love the APR kit. If you are not in a huge hurry or dont have the funds yet, wait it out. If APR releases the same supercharger they are going to use on the B8 stage 3 kit for the RS4, that kit mated with the RS4 will blow many other fast cars out of the water, with APR Smoothness, reliability, and Service. Im sure the kits from the other manufacturers are going to be excellent as well. Having options is always good.

but their clutches go to 11

Haha winner beem

When did your friend get his kit?

I dont know man, about ~2 years ago give or take a couple of months. Its Mugello blue or whatever the dark blue is called on the RS4.

Have you raced him? On pump gas he should take your car provided you have a tvsr1320 and no nitrous.

If not, tell him to get the tune updated. Apr launched the kit with a less than stellar tune, then enlisted JHM’s tuner to help them out. He found loads of improvement and changed the cars from mid twelve cars to high elevens cars.

You should see if your friend ever got the update because if he had the kit two years ago, there’s a chance he is on that old lame duck tune.

His car is up to date. I have raced him and his car was faster than my car but I only had Revo stage 1 at the time and no other mods whatsoever. I think hes looking to sell the car if anyone is interested in it. Hes selling it as is with his HRE’s. He also owns a MK4 GTI with a 2.0TFSI with APR stage 3 kit. He even has a full MK5 Dash conversion.

Thanks for all the input. Going with the used APR kit sounds like a good idea. I can upgrade in the summer when things sort themselves out.

Just noticed the AMD intake manifold design appears to allow for the top section to be removed. If so it could save a couple of hours in needing to remove the entire manifold during C/B cleanings.

I’ll give you my 2 pennies

Heat management. Always think less heat and no matter what kit you run, your car will truly rune stronger and smoother if you can avoid the heat soak. The RS4 engine bay has a V8 shoe horned in there to begin with, strap on a S/C with 40% more heat; you do the math.

Second: Upgrade to MED9.7. It’s going to give you a lot more parameters to work with.

Cheers and enjoy the hell out of your car!

SoBeRS4 drop me an email. Would like to hear how you went about getting your TTS kit.

LOL

Jason, are you guys any closer to sharing some performance information about the kit? Or is it still being tested?

I noticed it was already getting installed on customer cars, so was assuming you guys had put it through its paces on your own, and were moving on to customer testing.

Thanks for the update. Don’t be shy to check out this thread too…we discussed your kit there, but frankly mostly we were guessing because we haven’t heard much information on it. If I made any errors, feel free to correct me and I’ll edit the original post on page one.

Thanks

Here’s what I summarised about your kit

AMD - AMD appears to be working on a kit, but the details and seriousness of the project have remained very foggy. Apparently they’re using a TVS1900 supercharger, the same one on the Cadillac CTS-V in one version of the kit, and a TVS2300 the Corvette ZR1 supercharger in the other. AMD have been very tight lipped on this…rumour is they have fitted the unit to a donor car, but it is not moving yet.
TUNE: EPL maybe? AMD works with EPL on many builds
COST: unknown however they have jabbed at the $15,000 APR kit for being ‘expensive’ in forum posts
CLAIMED GAINS: on a web page linked to the project, 600 hp at the crank was claimed (even though the kit hadn’t been dyno’d yet). The writer of that claim said it was just a guess and admitted he should remove it until they have some results.
ACTUAL GAINS: ???
1/4 MILE RESULTS: ???

LOL

thanks for the update. Hope it kicks ass.

Looks like a few guys on QW are going to be early adopters. Actually that one guy whose username is S4per will have it on a 2008 Avus Ti that I nearly bought. I think he already has your downpipes on his car.

Actually the same appears to be the case for the TTS intake design. I don’t have actual dimensions, visually the runner length appears shorter and would make it easier to reach the valves.
