Custom intake for V10

This shop quoted me $350 what do you guys think.

It looks pretty cool, that’s for sure.

On all the previous NA v8 cars (C5 A6 4.2/C5 S6/B6 and B7 S4, etc) adding an intake like that decreased performance for a couple of reasons.

  1. the factory intake has a snorkel that goes to the front of the car, bringing in colder air. The aftermarket “cold air intakes” took in warmer air from the engine bay

  2. the factory intake was pressurized, increasing volumetric efficency of the engine. The aftermarket was not.

With that said, we are working on an aftermarket intake for the v10 S6 on the project car. Right now, I dont even have all the details myself, so I can’t say exactly how the designers plan to improve on the factory design.

If you can wait a few months for ours to be completed, then I would highly recommend that instead. I know it is going to be way more expensive than $350, so I am assuming it will be more than just a couple of tubes and filters. All the engine stuff that is added to the project car will be done with performance in mind. So, if there are no performance gains after testing, then it wont go on the car.

If you do decide to go with the one pictured. Do your best to do some type of BEFORE and AFTER test so I can add the information to the Info Dump.

i may just fabricate one that goes all the way behind the front grill away from the engine :), my buddy did it on his RS6

if i am unsuccessful i will be interested in yours ;D

leave your stock airbox alone. Stop wasting your money/time/power. It’s not a honda that needs an intake to drown out the shit sounding exhaust, and it’s not a forced induction car that’s limited by the intake.

Read the S6 threads and get up to speed. Pardon the pun.

Lol bro relax, its my money aint it? my trial and error will not only benefit me but current and future s6 owners, im a part of AudiSportClub NYC, we love doing stuff to our cars, this is my hobby man.

I looked into this for a local S6 guy. In addition to removing the covers for the lower bumper openings, you need to either remove or move the auxiliary cooler on the driver’s side from under the headlight. Otherwise this will hurt performance just like with the B6/7 S4s with aftermarket intakes since the engine will be sucking in a lot of hot air. The passenger side is fine since it is such a open space that you could almost fit a beach ball into. Then the intake tubes need to go down to just behind the front bumper openings on each side.

oh I’m sorry, bro…I must have misunderstood what this questions means

in my language, you were asking for opinions.

I guess in bro-speak that means ‘look how cool this thing is…tell me to do it as I need validation!’

It is good to see a fellow S6 owner so enthusiastic about modding their car. Obviously, Im in the same boat.

You probably dont know this about AudiRevolution, but there are a core group of members here who are experts
in Audi performance parts and tuning, specializing in the Naturally Aspirited engines. Unlike other sites where you will get all kinds of suggestions from people who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about, around here youll find that youll get valuable advice from very knowledgeable people (like the guys above) and any bullshit advice will get called out, really quickly. That is what makes AudiRevolution the only real place to go for people who really want to get the most from their cars (and avoid all the thieves in the industry often calling themselves ‘vendors’).

A funny example, a guy on another forum had an unbalanced wheel not long after installing new tires. The advice from one idiot ‘expert’ (AndreNY) was to replace all his brand new tires with a more expensive brand. No troubleshooting, just replace them all, because they were cheap tires, in his opinion.

That same idiot was on another thread recently, and recommended a tire size 245/35/20 as “perfect” for a 20x10 wheel on the A6/S6, because it allowed you to squeeze 20s on a lowered A6 with wheels with an offset that wasnt right. The tire he suggested (245/35/20), would not only be stretched outside of manufactures spec on that wheel, but at a maxiumum of 95 load index, it does not meet the minimum 97 load index for the the car, meaning the occupants of the car would be in an unsafe vehicle.

These are the types of ‘experts’ that we all used to end up arguing with all the time on other forums. Now, all the guys who really know what they are talking about just hang out here instead, on AudiRevolution. And subsequently, there is very little patience for any bullshit or bad advice around here.

When you first look at the v10 S6, it seems like everything is new and different from every other Audi. But when you look a little closer you find that the car actually shares a lot in common with all the past NA cars, and the same principles will apply when looking for power increase (as Sakimano pointed out on another recent thread). The key to getting power from the B6/B7 S4 4.2 v8 was:

  1. Gut the precats or go with catless downpipes
  2. Aftermarket exhaust with X-pipe and increased diameter
  3. JHM tune
  4. OPTIONAL: JHM intake, JHM intake spacers, Lightweight parts

I applied the same setup to my C5 v8s, and it also worked very well. The same principles will apply to the v10 S6.

I know you want to increase performance for your v10 S6. And 8 years after the car was initially released, you are probably getting a little bit impatient waiting for aftermarket parts to be released LOL.

The best advice I can give you right now is, just wait a little bit longer and save your money. $350 may not seem like much, but as Saki pointed out, it is actually going to cause more harm than good. $350 is a good chunk towards a JHM tune, which will be guaranteed to make a HUGE difference, when combined with the right parts.

We are putting countless hours into developing and producing aftermarket parts for the v10 S6. At the beginning, it was going to be just for my car, but, it seems like there will be a demand for these parts from other S6 owners. So, if you know the right person, youll likely be able to get some of them yourself.

Save your money and wait for the S6 project to be completed. And Ill make sure your name is near the top of the list for any aftermarket stuff, once it becomes available.

Great advice, V8.

Asking for an opinion doesnt mean asking for validation, but thanks for your input “bro”.

Sakimano nailed it LOL.

Great post v8

Pat. As for the intake it looks like more time was spent making it look nice and expensive then actually making it work. The location of the filter is right at the hottest spot in the engine bay so you would be loosing hp… how do we know because for years there were several company’s like v8 said that wanted to sell you anything just to sell you something. Along the way people started testing and the results were terrible. Worse then stock. The S6 air box is small but it’s still better then putting the intake right on top of the hottest part of the motor.

The idea of a cold air intake isn’t bad if it’s needed. Audio air boxes are generally ram air pressurized air boxes. So getting rid of a pressurized I air box to replace it with a hot air intake is going to be a bad idea. If you want a real good pick up for power your going to need to get down to the fresh air. Much further away.

sakimano is being a bully and brow beating people for attempting something “New” those comments are unnecessary and have been reported. constructive criticism is great being a Bully not. I am disappointed that any of you would condone such speech and reactions to simple post. I plan on following his threads and reporting any and all flaming or inciting arguments. It is uncalled for and unappreciated. Heck I don’t know the guy nor his life but I will not accept his abuse and you shouldn’t either. There is a wrong way to say the right thing.

Makes me not want to post anything that i am doing to my S6, I even started a tread to post everything I do to the S6, I got invited over here by v8a6 and i post here more than audizine. I havent seen a post anywhere about an intake for the S6 and thought i would share with the guys here.

why cant we all get along

On AudiRevolution, people come up with ‘new’ ideas all the time for modding, and bounce them off the rest of the group. Quite often, what posters think is a new idea, isnt new at all (e.g. CAI, meth carbon clean, etc.). In many cases, the idea has been thought of before, implemented, tested, and found to be of little to no performance gain. Sometimes, as in the case with most of the aftermarket cold air intakes, they have actually hurt performance.

When someone posts one of these ‘new’ ideas, and the guys who have been modding Audis seriously for a long time see the post, they can respond in a few different ways.

  1. Good thought, bad idea (aka the Sugarcoat)

Poster is commended for having the idea, and then it is pointed out how it failed in the past, and likely not worth repeating the failed experiment again.

Result: Sometimes the poster listens, and doesnt follow through with the plan.

But, a lot of the time you’ll find the original poster tries to defend their idea and argue with the super knowledgeable guys. Then, they end up wasting money implementing it. They almost never post the final results, even though they originally say that they will, because when the project ends up a failure, they are embarrassed that they wasted their money on an idea that they were told was bad in the first place.

  1. BAD IDEA!!! STOP NOW !!! SAVE YOUR MONEY !!! (aka Blunt force trauma or [b]the Sakimano :))

Loud and clear, they tell you that this is not a good idea at all, stop now before you waste another penny on it.

Result: The most effective way to get the message to the OP that the idea is bad. Poster ego may be bruised if he takes it personally. Majority of the time, the original poster will not follow through on the idea. The message that it is a bad idea has been stated so loud and bluntly, that it is almost impossible not to hear it.

In some cases, poster’s ego may be bruised so badly that they retreat back to Audizine where a bunch of guys who know nothing about modding cars stoke their ego, and tell them ‘that’s a fantastic idea!’

  1. No response (aka the Silence treatment)

No one knowledgeable offers any advice, because they have no interest in helping the poster, for whatever reason

Result: Poster wastes money and time on parts that dont work.

  1. Great idea! Let me help you with that (aka the Slimey vendor)

An unscrupulous vendor jumps in to offer a product that people are requesting, like a supercharger or a tune, or a poorly designed cold air intake. There are many companies that will gladly take your money, while ruining your car in the process.

Result: Lost money, and a car that performs worse than stock, and now has diminished value. Unlike other sites, AudiRevolution has no vendor sponsorship. So, scumbag vendors cant sell their snake oil around here without being quickly outed. In many cases, Sakimano has been the one to hold the vendors feet to the fire. And thanks to that, you wont see the slimey vendor step foot in AudiRevolution (they are all hanging out and drinking Dom Perignon paid for with money stolen from members, over on Audizine with the site Moderators)

So, while I’ll say that AudiRevolution is not for everyone, you can’t argue the fact that it is one of the only Automotive Enthusiast websites where you’ll get the straight facts, whether you like it or not. While the truth may not always be what you want to hear, over the long run, it will save you a lot of money, time, and frustration, if you choose to listen to the guys who have been doing this for awhile.

If you guys get your feelings hurt easy…then you may as well leave now.

But think about this…

If you ask a question here you get a straight answer.
If you are attempting something that doesn’t make sense, we will tell you.
If you are going to waste money, we will tell you (this is a good thing to most people)
If you try to re-invent the wheel, we will tell you.
If you need technical help or question you are in the best possible place for the correct answers…not guesses by random keyboard jockeys. There are a dozen or more guys here who have torn down and rebuilt their cars.

…and the #1 reason is your S6 has a shit aftermarket, NO ONE cares about it, just like the B6/7 S4 and RS4…but you will see, hopefully soon, that some big things are happening. (Check out V8A6’s posts).
The performance market for the S6 may get interesting and I can tell you it won’t happen on any other forum, so I suggest sticking around and not getting so bent out of shape over forum opinions/comment…bros.

Personally I think the OP should do the intake tubes…but he should rotate them up 90 degrees and cut two huge holes on each side of the hood. Then he can get a full ram air affect and have two cool ass filters sticking through his hood. As long as you paint match everything it will be BOSS.

Now THAT is a new idea !!!

I can respect a bit of deliberation and an explanation as to why something may or may not work but I can not respect rude retorts. I have yet to purchase my vehicle and would like to perform some modifications. If you can not have a bit of consideration when you reply leave it to someone who has that capacity. I feel like this is a very hostile environment to be in and have never felt that way before in any car forum and honestly I am thinking of going a completely other direction because of what I have gone though on this site. Maybe the guy has a lot of stress in his life. I don’t know but be mindful if you are going to make a critique follow it up with details and or links to where this had been previously discussed/done. You may all think you are experts unless you show some sort of proof behind you reasoning no one will listen, then they go and do it anyway. waste more money on stuff other people have tried. Some common curtsey all I ask. I don’t know why that is so difficult. Really…

… Yeah, Ok that’s just funny. Touche Saki well played.

It’s the Internet it’s hard to know how each post was ment to come across. Sakimano is very helpful and will go way beyond to make sure he helps. Part of his style of helping is giving it to you straight no fluff or bs… since you can hear his tone you have to fill it in and consider the possibility that your assuming his tone is negative and not just kind but straight forward.

I understand if you don’t know Audirevolution or the guys on it most of us wrote the threads you said it would be nice to have the links to. Audirevolution is growing due to people wanting to just come to the source and the guys that have done it. What you want to know is lots of company’s paid other websites to bury or delete bad press or bad results. We have all seem it. It’s hard to have an open dialog due to the money talks ideals on other websites. The Information Is Slowly Getting Rebuilt Over here. Your always welcome to try new things but most of the time the start guys will try to help or stop you from doing something stupid. I know your point is its your money and your car… sure but we all want good people in the community. What happens on other sites is.

You open up and say look an intake for 350$ most guys just want to see how it works out so they say oh man that’s cool. You go spend your money it ends up costing way more then 350$ by the time your done… at first you say how great it is. You say how happy you are and after a few weeks you realize the modification you made actually fuckimg sucks. You get frustrated and you sell the car. That’s every PES and random shop thread you have ever read.

We all want good guys to get great results.
