Cylinder 5 & 8 misfires - ideas?

Hi. I cannot figure out why I keep having misfires on cylinders 5 & 8. Maybe you all have some ideas? I think I’ve done all of the typical fixes: new injectors, coils, plugs, connectors, on and on and on. Pretty much everything and it still keeps showing up.

I only get misfires after car is fully warm. STFT does seem to be jumping up and down sometimes between -10 and 10 on both banks. Smoke tested and repaired all vacuum leaks I know of. Car seems to run perfectly smooth. The next thing I’m going to do is a compression test, which I admittedly, have been avoiding because I’m nervous about what I may find. The only thing I’ve noticed is that sometimes when I go to start the car, the brake pedal is hard to press so I assume there must be a small vacuum leak in the brake booster system somewhere?

Does anyone have any ideas or maybe has had the same experiences? I’m wondering about ECU drivers?

Okay, did a warm compression test. All cylinders were right at 190 +/- 5 psi. Thank goodness! :sweat_smile: I think that mechanically it’s very strong. But, that still doesn’t tell me what’s wrong. I’m thinking it’s electrical, since nearly all my other issues have been electrical.
The misfires are only cylinders 5 & 8 and only happen when car is warm (100c) and typically around 1400 rpm. Voltage was good.

They’re new injectors? There could be lots of carbon in the intake manifold in those runners. Check the intake and then the flaps. Also check the valves for carbon. Carbon tends to be a big issue with missfires as well as the other 50 things LOL

Thank you. Yes, new hitachi injectors, or whatever company bought out hitachi. Tearing into the manifold is next on my list because I’m pretty sure I replaced the other 49 thing. :slight_smile: pretty sure this car hates me.

I cleaned the carbon from the valves about 5000 miles ago and they all still look clean.

I’d look for a crankshaft position sensor related issue first. Cylinder 5 and 8 are firing exactly 360 degrees from each other, as by the firing order: 1-6-5-10-2-7-3-8-4-9

Try logging crankshaft position sensor. Also, post a VCDS scan.

That is a great idea! Thank you. That would make more sense as to why it might only misfire after it’s warmed up.

Roger that. Thank you. I’ll post my findings. Gonna check the flywheel too for any weirdness while i have the plugs out.

Not sure of what I’m looking at here, but, here are some flywheel pictures and I noticed this metal band that seems to cover up a lot of the relucter ring gap. It seems to run all the way around but moves in and out and just so happens to be the closest and most closed off when cylinders 8 & 5 are at the top of their stroke. It doesn’t seem like coincidence. But, I don’t know what normal is on these. It doesn’t budge at all. I almost wonder if the cps position and distance from the relucter ring should be slightly adjusted. I ordered an OEM cps because I’m already so deep in this, why not. :joy: :sob:

I ain’t gonna lie, I havent had similar issue with my car myself, BUT 2nd and 3rd picture looks like there might be something off. Are these pieces loose, or not?

EDIT: I have checked for flywheel pictures on the web, these “windows” should not be blocked IMO. Might be the culprit. Looking for anyone else to confirm (I won’t be able to take CPS off to see how it looks in mine in the nearest future)

Thanks for the reply. They are super solid and actually, they occur about every 120 degrees so. Im wondering if they are some kind of clamp. I’m going to assume it’s normal for now. I did inspect all of the cam position sensors and they had some sludge on them with magnetic goop. The engine is not sludgy fyi, just those magnetic parts. I cleaned those off and reinstalled. I also thoroughly cleaned the CPS, took pins out and cleaned them, cleaned the connector. When I went to put it on, it didn’t want to click, SO, now I’m wondering if the CPS connector was coming loose. I’m going to go for a test drive and see what happens. OEM CPS should be here tomorrow. Thanks for the help! It’s nice not being totally alone on this.
It could still also be the manifold flaps, but gonna scratch this off the list first.

I put the car back together after cleaning the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. The new CPS is shipped and will hopefully be here tomorrow. So here’s the crazy part…now the logs show misfires on 10/6/4/3 and zero misfires on 5 & 8. So I fixed 5 & 8 but now the other cylinders are misfiring. :joy: interestingly 5&8 are still differentiated from the other cylinders. Now I’m wondering if it’s some kind of adaptation issue. Guess I’ll hold off until the new CPS arrives.

There is an option, that there is something wrong with knock sensors (or their wiring), and there are no misfires actually.

Do you observe that the rate of increase of misfires that are reported is similar for each cylinder that VCDS is reporting a fault on?

It looks to me like there is 1 or 2 cylinders with more than the others. In the last test, number 10 had significantly more than the others. But again, 5&8 had zero and it was the opposite before. The rate of increase is different between most cylinders. One or maybe two seem to increase more rapidly. Whatcha thinking? :thinking: Also, it has zero misfires at idle and it doesn’t feel like it’s misfiring at all. So weird…

If my senses do not detect there is an issue, I always look for correlation in the data to help discern if what is being reported is real or not. Do you have access to a digital oscilloscope?

I do not believe the knock sensors factor into the determination of a misfire. They are tuned to detect the “ringing” in the block that occurs as a result of a pre-ignition or detonation event.

Misfires are calculated based on slight instantaneous changes in engine rpm as measured by the cps.
