Dashcams?

So you have a random ass wire hanging down? To the lighter?

Nah, I have it tucked in the hoodliner, down the left a-pillar, through the fusebox, under the floormat and then plugged into the 12V near the handbrake.

My original idea was to splice it into an always on source in the fuse box but I never got around to it. Also, I checked the video on the RNSE when I left this morning and it looks pretty clear again. I’ll youtube a clip once I get home.

I was getting into my car, and in one swift motion while sitting down I went to put the key in but it flew out of my hand and smashed the console. I thought ‘oh snap! that hit the carbon fibre ashtreay cover!’ and checked. WHEW. No damage. No damage to the HVAC controls either. Lucky.

Then later on that night driving home I realised I had in fact smashed the FUCKING SCREEN on my RNSE2010+. I have a big spider web on the backlight. When it’s off, you can’t see anything…but when it’s on a dark screen, there’s a white spider web. So annoying.

Any idea how to fix that anyone?!

Oh shit. Can we split this off into another thread?

The faceplate is a fucking pain in the arse to take apart. The screw heads are easily stripped so use the best quality and correctly sized screwdrivers you can find. Here’s the guide I used: http://www.lamboweb.com/Repairs_Section/Gallardo_Repairs_Audi_Nav_System_Face_Plate.htm

so he is saying $300 for a screen? he must be out his god damn mind

I stopped using the cig lighter beside the armrest. Was getting in the way. You can easily just have it go to the fuse box and pick an always on fuse or one that’s only on when ignition is on fuse.

^ That’s what I would do. I did this for my radar. Use a fuse jumper, ~$4-6 at the local auto parts store and it makes the job so easy and clean.

^ that was also my plan, but never got around to getting it done. It’s pretty non-intrusive right now other than a visible wire between the fusebox and floormat by the hood release.

Here are the results of the cleaning. Much better.

One thing I noticed while looking through the footage was the distortion that show up under extreme heat. The new BlackVue apparently fixes this issue with better venting. By extreme heat I mean that it got so hot that I couldn’t even hold the microSD card from it with my bare hands for more than half a second without burning it.

I’m not 100% sure the second version did sort out the overheating issues. http://dashcamtalk.com/blackvue-dr400g-hd-ii/ is from the site that beem linked to earlier. Some excerpts:

[quote]Unfortunately it does not appear that the overheating problem has truly been resolved. Even though the default bit rate is much lower, many users complain the camera gets very hot and there are reports of overheating cameras.

[quote]We suggest avoid using the parking mode in this camera. Many of the failures in the original version occurred with people who often used the parking mode feature. A parked car in the hot sun can is suspected cause of the many failures in the original model.

Some owners have drilled holes in the case to improve cooling, but this does not appear to be sufficient. Others have removed the rear half of the case and have installed a heatsink as shown in the following pictures (this is on the original DR400G-HD but the same principle can be applied to the DR400G-HD II). This is a more reliable solution.

So, what’s the next best dashcam? The DR400 does look nice from the outside

Bumping this up

What’s the good word on the best dashcams these days? I see lots of funny things on the roads and I would love to ALWAYS capture them.

Most notably, I could REALLY fill up the unofficial Tesla Spotted thread.

So, what’s the word?

I went with this one last month. Quite happy with it. It’s 2 channel (two cameras). One for the front, one of the rear, on the same microSD card (rear camera gets its juice from the front camera so no need for a rear power socket).
Wifi enabled makes it a breeze to manage as well.

I think I’m going to get one and see what it’s like.

I think you mean astonishingly and/or amazingly good.

That quality is very good, looks like a go pro… I’ll ask one of the blackbox ppl to take a look at one.

Yeah that camera looks great and for $199 with a 64gb card, that’s a really great price.

Never heard of them. I ended up with the Itronics itb-100 SPW. Love it. But the camera you posted is significantly cheaper ( paid 320 all in).
