Datadatum's RS4 log

This is my first log of a pull. I’m surprised at the timing that is being removed. Also looks like I also didn’t push the pedal down hard enough at first.

Notes:

  • Fully stock engine and exhaust (valve disconnected and line sealed)
  • 72 deg F, sunny and dry
  • Interstate on ramp, banked curve to the right
  • Thanks to Mistro for the assistance with audilogs.com

Is this third gear? I remember a few years ago at the drag strip, Saki noticed that the stock throttle isn’t strictly limited to 50%. If the temps are high enough that not enough power is being generated, more throttle is allowed.

… Or something like that.

I’ll see if I can dig up the thread here.

Here it is:

Here are the relevant bits. There’s some more good info in the thread though.

Wow must be warm where you live. Only partial throttle restriction

That is not because you didn’t push it down. That is because in third, before 5600 rpm the stock tune restricts the throttle.

When it is cold out. It restricts it to 52%.

When it is warm it’s less…I have see. 70something a few times.

When it’s piping hot out it opens 100%

As for pulled timing that looks like hot temps + either not great gas or some carbon buildup.

I did a run yesterday with the hot car on 91 and was seeing 5-6 degrees pulled.

I averaged about 575 rpm/second with jhm fullback including 1 set of cats

You are at about 480. Definitely the heat not helping. How about the gas and Carbon

Try it again going straight. Flat.

Damn mistro … Good memory

Yes 3rd gear. Thanks for the link, Mistro!

The last (and only) carbon clean, per the prior owner’s service records, was at 32,000 miles. The car is currently at 51,000 miles.

That makes sense. Fuel?

93 octane from Shell.

I do see that you stated fully stock engine, I’m still going to ask, any chance the previous owner had JHM intake spacers installed during that CC?

The reason I’m asking is, when I had mine installed I made the mistake of leaving the port separators in place. The result was poor performance and logs that looked very similar to yours.

Decided to yank the I/M off and remove the port separators and voila, zero to maybe 2 degrees pulled and my rpm/s & TQ figures climbed significantly.

At the time I did my logs it was a bit cooler than what your experiencing and I was also using Shell 93.

Sorry - missed your post! I cannot see any visible evidence of intake spacers. The prior owner was a radiation oncologist who was anal retentive about keeping the car stock, and only used Audi service. The service manager who knew the car well confirmed this.

New logs on a flat surface, with a fresh tank of Shell 93 (from a different station).

57*F, 98% humidity, 200lb driver, bagels and cream cheese in the back seat.

Log 3:

picked up 20 g/sec so that’s good. Big change. Probably 25-30 hp. Changes are

  1. 93 from a different station
  2. 20 degrees cooler

THat it?

Car is definitely making good torque now because you can see you are at 52% throttle before 5500 RPM. Big restriction.

You’re also ripping through 555 RPM/second now from 3000-7500. That’s MILES better than before. Basically same as my car when it was stock, which has been to the dragstrip 6-7 times and has probably fifty different 12 second passes under its belt. So you know you’re healthy in this config.

Thanks for the analysis. My house guests were wondering why the hell a bagel run took so much time.

Other changes from the original log (because without context, data means nothing):

  1. The last three logs were on a flat, straight stretch of road. The original log was on a banked turn, including a very slight elevation change (uphill).
  2. The engine had about 15-20 minutes of driving before doing the pulls. The original log, I got the oil temp up to 200 and let it rip.

Engine sure flows more air above 5000rpm…

That’s very odd. Almost like your secondary airbox flap wasn’t opening before.

Agree - that’s the first thing I thought!

I’ll be double checking operation momentarily, just got done with the fuel filter.

Just after I purchased the vehicle (a year ago this St. Patrick’s day), I went through the RS246 flap test http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=77235, and found that my secondary flap was sticking. I got it moving again, and attempted to spray some lubrication on the mechanism. It seemed to work much more smoothly at that time, but perhaps it needs a little more persuasion…

Flap test went perfect.

However, the flap did feel a little dirty/sticky when I stuck my hand in to manually operate. I wiped it down (best I could), and it felt smoother. I will have to make this flap inspection part of my routine maintenance.

^ Good idea. I clean my air filter with every oil change. While it’s out I wipe down the flap area as best as possible and squirt a tiny bit of WD40 on the pivot points. Figure every little bit helps keeps things happy.

Big improvement, now that we know the test location changed I think that was also a large contributing factor in addition to the ambient temp changes and different fueling station… All good stuff, thanks for sharing.

The before after actually makes sense. Your flap is fine

It’s the throttle.

Before it was hot so your throttle was quite open. Thus there would be only a modest gain at 5500+

After run it was quite closed so we would expect a big jump at 5500

Before da was shit . After da was better.

I guess it makes sense that your before and after maf numbers are so similar. Before the tune compensated up to 5500 by opening the throttle. After it didn’t, it kept your restricted before 5500

5500+, the before run didn’t have much more to give whereas the after run did once the the restriction was lifted.

Again - thanks for the anlaysis, I appreciate it!

I’ll continue to log as I go through some of the 55,000mile maintenance items:

  1. Just replaced the battery and swapped the fuel filter. (no logs yet)
  2. Spark plugs on order, will swap them out next weekend - time permitting. (will try to log before/after in same weekend)
  3. Carbon clean (once I decide who will do it - local dealer wanted an exorbitant fee).

And then I have fun stuff for later this spring:
4. JHM Piggies have been sitting in storage for about 10 months. Time to put them on!
5. JHM tune will be ordered after I’m confident everything is fully sorted.
