It’s metal man, you should be able to sand it down and polish it out like you would any metal. It would help to have a dremel or something.
or you could opt for coating the muffler and tips with jethot or something similar.

Yeah, go ti conversion and black out your trim and mufflers
Hit it with steel wool or use a wire wheel on a drill. Should buff right out depending on how deep it is.
Euro - yep, hoping it is a piece of cake!
Saki - always an option! I actually don’t ever wash my stock tips, as I like the them blacked out. But I will try out the shiny style first.
Monty23 - Thanks for the advice! Because this is reimbursable shipping damage, I’m having my shop quote it first.
LOL - the mechanic said, “No problem. Scotchbrite and buff. Takes a few minutes, depending on how deep it is.”
Installation appointment next Thursday.
Spring has arrived in Florida. 1 day of pollen…

Ha, and it’s 90 degrees in Orlando
It’s 45 degrees here which is great compared to the winter temps but apparently going back to freezing for a few days
Yep - it will get up to mid-80s in Jax today. Typical March.
I was in Orlando last weekend, took my daughter to BlueMan Group at Universal, and stayed there overnight. How I hate driving on I4. It was the start of bike week, so there were bikes EVERYWHERE heading to/from Daytona.
Near Daytona on I4, I saw a bunch of cars mash the brakes and swerve in the left lanes, so I cut three lanes all the way right FAST. Sure enough… biker down. Lots of people stopped to help, I was able to get past before the interstate completely closed.
Wow crazy. Yeah the bike week stuff…we just missed it fortunately. Last year we were in Orlando right after it and there still billions around
Bike week gets more crazy each year. I used to go almost every year but it’s started to take a turn in the wrong direction.
Pollen is a good trade off for 2 feet of snow up here. It looks like it’s going to be a lot harder to get off the car then snow tho. Lol
Great to hear about the fix on the tips. It would be cool to see a before and after just to have for people in different situations in the future. It would be good to know that if after several years of use of the tips get nackered up it cam be fixed easily
I have friends that go to bike week every year. It is a costume show. Button down managers at a Dow Jones standard… all leathered out on their Harleys… Nobody takes it seriously, they just go to enjoy the freak show.
The part that I hate is crazy riding that spills outside of Daytona. Guys doing wheelies on the interstate, lane splitting at a 50mph speed differential… Cops don’t even pull them over, they just flash the lights and let them go.
Yes, I’ll take some more pictures - good call.
Dropped the car off yesterday. My mechanic (actually the owner @ Technical Dimensions) looked at the scuff and said he wouldn’t even charge me to buff it out and polish it. So good news for me (and JHM, who would have filed a shipping claim against it).
He said my car sounds awesome, and thinks the quality of work on the JHM exhaust is excellent. He did say that a recent Tubi RS4 he worked on last week sounded better. The glove has been thrown down!
I’m going to educate him on the technical differences between Tubi and JHM when I pick the car up today - and would like to have folks here provide feedback.
Here’s what I know so far… (correct me PLEASE if I’ve got facts wrong or missing!)
Tubi vs. JHM
catback vs. full exhaust (dp/mp/cb)
$3400 vs. $3000
2.5" vs. 2.75"
LOUD vs. loud
… ?? …
Tubi is just mufflers and is more like $6,000. It’s basically an axle-back system.
It provides zero performance beits…just makes an interesting sound. I find it a bit hollow and obnoxious but lots of people love it.
Most people I’m convinced just like it because tubi makes exhausts for Ferraris, so they must be good right? (“my guy works on Porsches and Ferraris so there’s no way he fucked up the install of my audi rs4 clutch, and he definitely knows how to tune an RS4”)
If you want a full exhaust with downpipes and catback, tubi is not a choice you can even make. They just provide some tiny mufflers that don’t is much muffling. While jhm is $3000 for a full exhaust which should garner you some 30 hp, the tubi will set you back twice as much and do absolutely nothing.
You should get your guy to hear you car at 8000 rpm. Sounds amazing up there.
Difference in sound is such a horrible argument for these guys that spend $5-6k on a set of mufflers or catback only. The quality of the JHM exhaust is one of the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve purchased and helped install exhaust from almost every company you could name.
Datadum, the Tubi doesn’t even qualify as a catback and to be completely honest you’d probably be able to replicate the sound with two decent mufflers from a company like magnaflow or flowmaster…for less than $300!!
Here is why I personally will buy a JHM exhaust"
Thanks guys! Good stuff.
Regarding price, I just posted the first link I found: http://www.championmotorsport.com/product-p/tsaurs4c07-003-ao.htm You’re right, just mufflers. Not even catback.
wow that price is way down I think. Maybe because the Euro is down 30%.
Would like to hear from ny07rs4 who used to have a tubi. he bought it pre-owned (aka used) and sold it for pretty much what he paid for it, if not more.
Sounds great! Definitely different than my previous configuration (JHM DP’s + ECS H-pipe + stock mufflers).
Higher pitched. Mechanical. Crisp. More like a precision racing engine, rather than a muscle car.
Both configurations sounded great, but this one sounds better the higher I rev. There is some drone at ~1700 to 2000rpm, which wasn’t there before. I suppose that is to be expected losing the stock muffler system. It may be worse at the moment, given that my rear seats are down and the trunk is full of disassembled exhaust parts.
Also - had fun with the mechanic on the Tubi. He said straight up, the only good thing about them is the sound. So… no need to convince regarding power/construction/etc. LOL
He also buffed the scrape for free. You can’t tell it was scraped at all. I said JHM would get reimbursed via a shipping claim, but all he asked was to put in a good word with JHM for his shop. That much I will do!
Tubis are the most resold piece of automotive kit ever. Yes, they DO sound amazing. No argument about the drama they create. But even the ones that don’t make your ears bleed are still so loud you get tired of them.
Quick update… Went for an hour long drive early this morning. Car felt great. The more I hear the new exhaust sound, the more I like it.
Full throttle: The exhaust brings out the best of the high revving 4.2L. It really sings once the power flap opens above 5500 rpm.
Part throttle: Doesn’t sound very loud at all. Very liveable. Docile.
Downshifts: My favorite part. Really connected sound.
Deceleration: Burble, pop, burble. Great sound… like the car is daring you to get back on the gas.
Drone: A slight resonance exists between 1700 and 2000 rpm. By the end of my 1 hour drive, I didn’t notice it anymore - so it definitely isn’t bothersome. The best way to describe it is that the exhaust is slightly louder within that rpm range. Not a bad sound at all, just a slightly louder sound.
Power: Yes, the butt-meter says there is more power. It was a very cool morning (for Florida) at 55 °F, and the car felt really frisky with the new exhaust burbling and popping. The JHM tune WANTS this exhaust, and seemed to be saying “Thank You!” while I ripped through some twisties.
Pro-tip: Don’t touch the tips, unless you want a 2nd degree burn. Those things get HOT.
Only little girls drive their 4.2l V8 in that RPM range anyways…
Nice review though!
