Seems like I’m not the only one who has had this problem.

8e1820511c I guess?
Diyable?
^ not certain what part is the “central flap.”
I have an extended warranty from Audi… so we’ll see what happens when I ask them to fix it.

Update:
-
The HVAC malfunction has proven to be intermittent. It is no longer failing, and does not show up on the VAG-COM faults. I am loathe to take the car to the dealer with a cell phone video as my only evidence.
-
As planned, I ordered the JHM tune. No installers in my area, so I go the cable to do the install myself. Install to be done after I get the DP installed and logged…
-
My piggie downpipe installation failed. Turns out the used JHM Piggies I bought have a v-band connection on them. I really didn’t think about it, I’ve never taken the DPs off before and just didn’t consider it.
I took the car to a local Porsche performance specialist who services the only other 2 RS4s in my city. It was my first time having work done there. The owner was very upset that he missed the v-bands until AFTER he had the stock DPs off the car. Oh well.
I’ll work with Jake to figure out if the parts are actual used JHM parts or not, and then go from there.
- Every challenge is actually an opportunity – I ordered JHM catted DPs with reducers. 3-6 weeks delivery. We’ll see if the tune can wait, or if it goes first…
JHM tuning cable arrived today! Woohoo!
Woot!
As my own (and mistros) testing has shown the jhm downpipes with cats are fantastic. My car picked up a good 20+hp and 20+tq with the jhm catted system. Mistro set the fastest all motor rs4 record with his catted setup, beating the times set by the Catless cars who went before him in 2011. His results also show that the jhm tune keeps evolving as it and the cats are the only difference between his car and 2000s4 and dan@jhm who went 12.28 and 12.29 respectively @112
Hopefully you have the catback too?
No cat back for now. I like the stock exhaust sound, and the valves (though I hate the s button throttle remap).
Speaking of the tune, is the function of the s button changed at all?
I don’t know
Count Vohn told George to hit the s button when he went to the strip.
P.S. I’ve seen a few people talk about hating the same button, and often it’s engineers (reggie, elevens, petroldave) . Weird. It doesn’t bug me much. Wonder why you guys dislike it. Is it because it’s not linear and sensible?
I sent CV a PM last week. I’m sure he’ll get to it (or reply here) sooner or later.
Stereotyping aside, I like your question in the post script. For me, it is all about the primary control interfaces (pedals, steering wheel, 6MT) being consistent and predictable. In nearly all respects, the B7 RS4 does this brilliantly - one of the best all-around driver’s cars out there.
The S-button throttle remap makes the car respond noticeably different to the same throttle input. While that is exactly Audi’s intent, I don’t like it. My intuitive response is to remap my right-foot muscle-memory to obtain the desired (predicted) response, and not an “enhanced” response.
The irony is that Audi packaged this feature with the exhaust valve remapping, which I do like. Someone on another forum added a button to override the exhaust valve mapping (stock or always-open), and I may do this myself.
Several related comments regarding the primary controls:
-
Servotronic took a bit to appreciate. At first, it felt over-boosted, but now no longer noticeable.
-
Not a fan of the low-gear torque limiting “feature” that the RS4 came with. Very excited about addressing this with the JHM tune.
-
The default traction control is way too intrusive. (Achtung! Bad Driver!) Wish it could default to allowing much more wheel spin without a flashing light in the dash…
Yes once I got my JHM exhaust and had no exhaust valves, I probably haven’t touched the S button more than like 10 times in 6 months. Just at the dragstrip. I never was bothered by the hyperactive midrange throttle though.
I agree with you about all the other stuff too. The torque limit is frigging weird. I would love to grill stephan reil about that.
Had to look up Stephan Reil. Found a few interesting interviews!
I like this one from April 2008:
Journalist: You say that you have been doing this job for 10 years. What has been your greatest success?
Reil: The car that is really close to me is the RS 4 because if I were the customer with the choice and the money the RS 4 would be my car. This is because, in every project there is a lot of blood and sweat, but the RS 4 is something special because it is just what I think my car would be.

Cool. Lots of people still feel that way. It’s weird too because the b8 is the same thing pretty much, just with dsg . But it has been panned. They’re (dealers) giving 10,000 pounds off in the UK. Yes pounds, not dollars.

Speaking of the tune, is the function of the s button changed at all?
Yes, the S button is still fully functional.
Predictably, I decided not to wait for the DP’s to install the tune.
There isn’t a local JHM tuning shop, so I also purchased the Cheetah cable. My JHM server log-in information came through yesterday, and this morning I endeavored through the extensive instructions…
… which are very well written. Everything went exactly as documented. I skipped the section on the internet browser modifications, as JHM now includes a new site-specific browser. I finished in the time it took to have two cups of coffee. Overall, very transactional with no surprises.
As recommended, I set up a battery charger, made sure my laptop was fully charged/plugged, and verified a strong wireless signal (for me, my driveway vs. my garage). In hindsight, this was all overkill.
Selecting the program was a head-scratcher. While the system automatically detected my ECU and proposed what to flash, it was labeled “2007” and “4.2L EFI V6”. I hunted around on their server and could not find a 2008 RS4 program, and had to assume that “V6” meant “version 6”… versus the cylinder count. It would have been helpful if the exact name was sent to me in advance.
Once the flash got started, it took care of both ECUs in a relatively short period of time.
First impressions?
- 1st and 2nd gear acceleration are reborn. WOT feels like it should, instead of the artificially limited factory crap
- 3rd feels better, although not as dramatic
- 4th and 5th feel like there is small improvement, perhaps most noticeable in throttle transitions
- the throttle feels like a dead spot has been removed. Blips are sharper, and it is feels easier to rev-match on downshift.
So far, first impressions are excellent. Just what I hoped for. I haven’t logged yet, and plan to before the DPs.
My only complaint has nothing to do with the product itself. The JHM server log-in information took 14 days and 6 hours to be e-mailed to me. This is an unacceptable period of time. I wasn’t in a rush, so I have no axe to grind - but it is a shame that their spectacular customer service was nearly undone with the final (critical) step of the transaction. Seems like low-hanging fruit to address…
Great review and feedback!
