Just to clear things up, its not totally a “ploy” to get more money from the tuners. I.E. if you up your ECU tune from 6800 to 7000 but you put your shift point inside the DSG tune to 7200, you will never shift. That is just one issue that I have seen happen.
What… well if you don’t have any common sense I guess anything can happen. I would thunk at this point people would be smart enough to know they need to match there ecu Rev limit to the DSG limit. If you have a stage 2 ecu file from either apr or giac they already extend the rpm limit. The DSG file just allows the transmission to do that.
To be more clear if all things are equally the same max rpm and max shift rpm as it seems to be in this case. A giac DSG tune would work in a apr car. Your transmission Can’t tell who tuned it. I’m not saying it’s a great idea I’m just saying it’s possible.
I looked it back up and I was dead wrong. Sorry about skewing the facts. Found the email and it was 2498 + tax for GIAC stg 2 installed at auto europe. This included the GIAC map switcher which APR obviously doesn’t have. With APR, I did the pulley install myself and paid 490 shipped for the pulley and then 1150 + tax for the tune and installation. At the time, it seemed like the best deal and decision for me. If we all made the same decisions, the world would be a boring place. Hindsight is 20/20, and I probably made the wrong one, oh well :).
I’m going with a revo stg 2 + dsg friend to Milan next week. So I’ll just flash the APR update + DSG tune and see how it performs. Have a track day at mid ohio in a couple weeks, so that should be a good opportunity to flog the car and see if there are any issues.
Justin - you could very well be correct about the DSG tune + ECU tune mixing. I just would prefer not to be the guinea pig with that…I’ve seen those tuners bitch at each other and point fingers when things go wrong (switching tuners for example leading to ECU getting fried).
drob, Sorry been a busy few days getting caught up after being out of the office… Anyway, no Thompson last night as we had some strong storms late yesterday afternoon, so we’ll see about next week… I may go Sat. but my son has a tball game at 11 so we’ll see… Also, looks like rain throughout the weekend…
The latest revision I has the auto upshift on so I can’t do the rev limiter video… APR said once everything is worked out they’ll make a file with all the features I want and in the end this one isn’t that important to me anyway…
As for your car, I think RS4nightmares is spot on, you’ll benefit from the extra rpm range… So I’d do it and it seems the newer cars aren’t having any issues or they haven’t been reported that I’m aware of… I won’t get into the price debate as everyone has their own unique financial situation and too some 1K is huge and others not so much… I’m sure APR will lower the price but I wouldn’t expect that until GIAC does an update or 6-12 months goes by… No knowledge on this just pure speculation… Also, like others have said you can always get the refund in 30 days… I’m pretty sure you’ll be happy with it! I’d get all the LC’s set to one value if I were you… Probably 4 or 4.5K will work the best… Looking forward to your thoughts and I’ll bet you knock 2-4 tenths off your ET…
Just booked an appt with Pure Tuning in Toledo, 999 + tax out the door for tune update and TCU tune. Will post all my feedback and times from next week.
Regarding 1k, it’s just a matter of value there IMO. It’s not putting me in the poor house, but I’m not super wealthy and there are a lot of things I’d like for 1k. We’ve all spent a lot of money on our cars, it definitely feels better when you know the value is there. Kind of like a BBK, most people will scoff at 2.5k to replace a factory part, the track performance is obviously a whole different animal, but I actually love how they perform on the street. People who have done a FBSW upgrade will probably make the same argument. If the daily driving is as improved as you’ve said, along with rs4nightmares, then I will feel like it’s worth it if the strip performance shows a .2-.4 et improvement. I would be more than happy to have a street car that runs 12.0x@114 on 93 octane.
Wasn’t there a kit out there for a DSG clutch pack upgrade? How much did that cost?
I have to think there’s a reason Audi made the car shift 1000 RPM below redline, and that reason was longevity of the tranny. They don’t want them blowing up before 100k miles and the resulting brand quality perception falling.
the 2010-2012 guys had a bunch of problems with the mechatronics units so maybe that was it. I haven’t heard of anyone wearing out their clutches though.
They aren’t “blowing” up, the circuit board that controls the hydraulic actuators that shift gears has been known to “die” when bathed in hot oil. I don’t have the self study guide, so I can’t tell you exactly how the circuits are arranged. There is one fluid which is serviced every 35k miles, and another which I believe is lifetime. The RS5 has fluid flushed from both circuits. VAG already did a recall with the transverse 7 spd DSG to change the trans fluid.
This problem seems worst on early model B8’s during low speed traffic creep in the humid summer. But Jeff and Ron are hammering this trans on race gas…and we aren’t seeing the DSG be a weak link at all.
Also, I think Arin made a good point on AZ, namely that the B8.5 trans was geared for fuel economy. So could the redline have been cut to enforce peak power with the new gear ratios? E.g. revving the engine to 7.2k RPM would put you out of the maximum power band, and you should have shifted earlier to realize maximum acceleration? Just a thought.
Justin, pretty sure GIAC won’t even sell their dsg tune w/o ecu tune… Based on what others have said and my dealings with apr I think their is a strong dependency between ecu/tcu on this car… I’m not a tuner though so I could be wrong… Apr seems wiling to test this so maybe we just need a revo/epl/giac tuned car to try their tcu tune…
Thanks bud! I think you’ll like the tune… I hear you on the $s. Wasn’t trying to be a smart ass just always hard to value software… Supply and demand, new product, loyalty, etc. lots of variables and something tells me apr will do pretty good on the sales side… They’re still focused on getting my car right and seem to be willing to go to great lengths…
I had the transmission codes extracted today… ::). Seems that I’m a ways off form getting the TCU flash. I’m supposedly box #9 (overheard) and they’re not up to this one yet. Couldn’t wait for everyone any longer (I know what I said) that 7,200rpm redline is really missing from turning the car into beast mode. It should still take about a month or so I’m guessing to get it.
Just had my 45K service yesterday(9,342 miles) and they did the DSG fluids, I asked for no software updates… Feels like it shifts a little smoother but it could be in my head! lol I had them do it this time vs last since my miles were so low, not to mention they kind of forgot it was a requirement last time… lol Officially out of warranty as of June 4th and still no TD1… lol
