Diagnostic Challenge - ECU? Wiring? Other?

After a long weekend that ultimately ended in me needing a rental car to get home, my avant is stuck 300 miles away with some unknown issue.

Little background: Last Friday I drove the car 300 miles to my sisters for the weekend with no problems (other than a loose PS hose clamp I noticed when I arrived). Sunday, I start the car and pull it around the house to the garage, shut it off, and load up some lumber from a project. Start the car again about 15min later and pull it back to the front of the house. Car started fine both times but had a bit of a lope/bobble to the idle, which I didn’t think much of as it had gone from 40deg to about 15deg and I just thought it was from sitting in the cold all night. I have no idea if that is related or not.

Anyway, a couple hours later I’ve got it loaded up and ready to head home and I went out to start it, and it just cranks and cranks. Sounds SO close to firing but just wouldn’t. If you ever had the crankshaft sensor go out it was very similar to that. BUT never threw a CEL (which the crank sensor does when it goes). In addition to the codes below, things of note:
1. With key in ON position, the front radiator fans run full blast. With key off, they shut off.
2. I don’t think the fuel pump is priming.

I hook up VCDS and get these codes. NOTE!!! It did NOT communicate with the Engine (Address 01). I could NOT get it to read anything in block 01.

So I do some fiddling, drop the belly pan back off, take the ECU cover off to see it if was wet (It wasn’t really, just some old leaves in there, and it hadn’t rained the night before or anything). Then I try autoscan again and get the following, and OH LOOK the engine block is back??? Wtf again. Note: I had not cleared anything after that first scan.

I had a battery charger on it sometime between the two reads with a few start attempts as well. All the airbag sensors and radiator stuff is plugged in.

My thoughts are a bad ground or power wire loose or a short somewhere? Or is my ECU cooked? I found a B6 A4 thread where someone had the same issue with no pump prime, fans blowing with key on, and no-start… ended up being a bad ECU I guess. Idk if that is my case, but it seems like something weird is going on specifically with a lot of the codes being from front end/radiator wiring, since I have fans acting up, the outdoor air temp sensor is on there, front airbag sensors, etc. Not sure with the transmission stuff, I know I am about 1/2 qt low on fluid since I had the front clip off and installed the jhm cooler last week, but it drove about 400-500 miles since then without issue so I don’t know??

Unfortunately I didn’t have much time to mess around as I needed to get home and had to find a rental and drive 5 hours still. Does anything jump out at anyone? Just wondering if someone has any sort of experience with this or can at least give something to look into once I get the car home.

I posted on AZ as well, so far I’ve got another opinion that the fans means a cooked ECU, but also that it still might be a short/wire/ground/power issue. So my main question in addition the above ones- are there any resources available to help troubleshoot something like this? Something that helps indicate what relay or pins to test, what voltage to expect in what scenario, or stuff like that. I have the Bentley but am willing to get something else as well.

I’ll let the S4 guys can speak to whether it could be the ECU, but what about a (couple) bad relay(s)? Fuel pump relay comes to mind.

Yeah I think that relay is where I am going to start, just trying to find some info on where they are, how to test them, etc in the mean time while I figure out how to get the car home!

A few quick thoughts. When you put the key to acc and you hear the fans turn on full blast. That is a 100% clear sign that the ECU is not sending a signal back. The ECU actually keeps the fans off. So the ECU communication would be an issue that you would want to monitor. There is a good chance that there is a loss of communication. It could be ECU related. I would try to run a vag com scan while you try to start the car. Make sure your connected to the motor module and just pull up a simple block like 003 and I think 005. I don’t remember what block gives you batt voltage off hand but that would be the other block to have pulled up.

And the fuel pump won’t prime if the ECU isn’t sending a signal. A good way to know this is the case. Do the exact same thing but pull the ECU out and you will see the fans turn on when you turn the key to acc.

UPDATE: So I got the car back last weekend and this is what happened.

TL;DR - Drove car 300 miles. Started twice next morning but third time would not start, just kept cranking. No fuel pump prime, front fans on FULL, and intermittent ECU communication with VCDS. Car sat a month, got trailered home, recharged battery, and started after a few tries and has started and run just fine ever since. Nothing seems wrong but confidence is shot that I won’t get stranded 100s miles from home because I did not do ANYTHING other than charge battery and pull/clear codes a few times.

Ok, this will be a little long but please bear with me. Problem first started as outlined iarlier in this thread. For the last month the car had been sitting in my sister’s heated garage. Last weekend, I went with a friend and picked up the car and trailered it home. Couple things to note at time of pickup: Battery was dead, as in it wouldn’t unlock or roll windows or anything. When I got it home, I hooked up my battery charger and it wouldn’t even charge (I think because the voltage was so low). I jumper cabled it with my other S4 and let it charge that way about 10min, after which my regular battery charger picked it up and began charging. I let it sit that way for 6-8 hours, I think it got to 85% or so. It was outside so I disconnected the charger for the night. The next day I hooked it back up for a few more hours. Then this is what I did.

  1. I pulled all codes with VCDS autoscan. Results from that first pull are below. There is a LOT here I think associated with the totally dead battery. One improtant thing maybe to highlight is VCDS had no issues picking up the engine Address 01 and read it just fine.

After that, I cleared the codes, shut the car off, and turned it on again probably 3 or 4 times in a row. I drove it to the gym that evening, then the grocery store the next day. No issues at all. So, basically, I didn’t so anything to it and it seems magically fixed?? Which is a bit unsettling and not exactly confidence inspiring. The only thing I really messed with was the battery. But I’ve had it die in my other S4 without nearly the same issues. And that very first time it wouldn’t start a month ago, I cranked that thing for at least 2-3 minutes total while troubleshooting and it was cranking strong nearly that whole time/

What gives? Loose ground? Flaky ECU? Magic pixies? Wonky battery? I want to use this vehicle but without knowing why it stranded me 300 miles from home it’s hard to trust it won’t do it again without finding out WHY. Thanks for reading, hopefully someone has some idea…

I had this happen to my old B7 S4. Is your car tuned? I know back in the day the ecu had to be sent out to get chipped rather than flashing it through the port. The eprom came loose in the ECU and would not communicate. Not sure if this is the cause of your issues but I would open your ECU and check to make sure it is seated well.

Yes, it has an old JHM tune. The PO indicated it was chipped rather than flashed. Do you by chance have any photos of what the EPROM looks like or where it is seated? Is it pressed in somewhere or soldered? Thanks for the response.

Justin, I did not record this, I forgot. I do remember looking at them, I think I scrolled through most of those once the car was running and everything seemed normal but I didn’t watch it prior to that. I can log it this week if you think it will still help? I do remember the voltage was in the 12’s (based on what my charger was reading) when I first tried to start it and it wouldn’t start. When it actually started it was reading over 13V (again, on the charger).

As mentioned if you have a chipped ECU it could have been the chip but I wouldnt think so given the battery drain. If you want you can always contact JHM and they can set your cars ecu up for flash so you dont have any issues in the future but you would have to talk to them as I think its been a while since they chipped ECUs.

What makes sense to me by your very well detialed story is that your battery got low the immobilizer locked you out then you cleared codes and it let the car start. Generally when the car starts and dies within 3 seconds its the immobilizer. Once the battery and immobilizer comunicated enough the car will start and run.

To cover all the bases I would talk to JHM about getting your ECU converted from chipped to flashed. and make sure the battery stays good and charged.

Yeah, I have contacted JHM via email and am going to be verifying the ECU is physically chipped for them. Hopefully once they know that we can continue to work toward a solution.

Do the immo prevent fuel pump and starting and all that, or will it always start for 1-3 seconds then die? Because the car never actually started and died, it just straight up never started.

Not sure when the battery was replaced. I only bought the car a couple months ago. IIRC the sticker shows 2013 or 2014 but I might be thinking of my other S4.

Great pictures. Yes you have an oldschool chip. The good news is the new flash makes more power with a new tune update over the older chip versions.

Are you sure? I sent these same photos to JHM, who said quote:
“The file is not a “chip” This is a flash tune.”

I was expected it to be chipped as that is what the PO said it was, and also that one chip on the underside looks different so I was initially thinking it was that but JHM seems to say no ??? Can’t say I’ve every looked at an S4 ECU before though so I don’t know what I am looking for specifically.

Update…

Up until this morning, have been driving the car without issue for a few weeks now. Haven’t changed anything. I need to take the ECU again at some point and redo the seal between the two halves, but other than that don’t plan on changing anything.

JHM responded about the ECU chip vs flash, so that seems to be clarified:
“That ECU has been opened in the past and the chip removed and the ECU converted to flash technology. That being said, the only way the ECU would be an issue at this point is if the ECU itself was failing. This is possible but unlikely. I’m not sure where to go on this from here to help you without the car being here.”

Was going to drive it to/from work and around town a few more months and see if anything happens. Not sure what to chase at this point. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

THEN, just this morning:
Wife went to start the car this afternoon, same problem.

Get home, hooked up VCDS. Lots of short to ground/intermittent crap, lots for door locks, automatic seat stuff… some stuff for no or intermittent communication with engine… Battery down to ~8v and 10% (only tried cranking it 5-6 different times, 3-5 seconds ea). Can a short somewhere KILL the battery that fast without fireworks?? Currently have the charger on… I’m not convinced it is the ECU, seems like a short somewhere? or loose ground? Is my alternator messed up? I don’t know. Help ??? ???

If I read this properly, you haven’t actually done anything to the car aside from logs, and removing the ECU to poke around at it?

So none of the relays or the battery have been replaced or swapped to troubleshoot? Just straight to the ECU?
