Starts again on March 18th. I will check the Farmer’s Almanac for a DA forecast. I heard there’s a lot of planets on this side of the solar system right now, which should help pull my car over that line (I forget if solar winds contribute to just ET or MPH or both).
The video basically confirms what most people think. The Tesla is cool from 0-60, after that is will get raped by other cars in its price range. The RS7 from earlier in discussion would also win by the same margin or more…bus lengths.
Well, it costs about $25,000 a day to rent a track with a safety crew. Absent that, you have to share it with other people. You can bang all of the gears you want but it’s not a time trial. Even with good drivers and open passing your lap times will vary by 1-2 seconds as you execute your passes.
I don’t know how many times I have to say this, but Top Gear isn’t a track. It’s an airfield autocross for a comedy show.
o I think you missed the point. You posted a video of Ayrton Senna shifting gingerly on a casual drive and tried to hold that as a ‘standard’ and you were intimating the ‘greatest of all time’ can’t even shift quickly.
Reality is he was driving and talking about a car. Not racing.
An HPDE only teaches one thing - safety. Speed is a side effect of consistent execution of the line. Most people are at the level of trying to get a couple of decent heel/toe shifts in per session. No one is being taught how to set a lap record because it puts other people in danger that they didn’t sign up for. Generally smooth shifts are preferred, and if they’re quick that’s fantastic. But if they’re quick and not smooth the car may toss out an emergent behavior the driver and instructor are not ready to recover from.
I have been shifting a lot faster this year. It took a while to unlearn the habit after being hobbled by the dual mass flywheel for so long. The JHM allows for quick shifts without shocking the driveline.
Let me know how fast you lap Watkins Glen when the snow melts. It will humble you quickly if you give it a try. No one will even troll you if you don’t set the track lap record your first day out, because it’s a road course and it takes a decade or a lifetime to master.
I am pretty sure that they are repaving Watkins Glen this year. Might be wrong but I was bummed when I looked at the ACNA website because those events are held on Mondays and Tuesdays normally so I could go without losing out on work.
Also a person is never going to get a chance to really push their car at a HPDE since there are other drivers on the track that slow you down. The ride along instructors frown on driving that way too. This is one more reason why I chuckle at guys like daytonars4 when he came on here to challenge me at VIR.
Agreed. Electric have some nice torque down low but I still prefer gas (cue West Tesla rant). Really hoping to get out to Michiana Raceway this spring and try out some of their shifter carts. I used to do an indoor league around here but they got bought out and switched to electric, changed up the entire race format too. Not nearly as competitive or fun now.
