ECUTOOL.com VAG Com cables - some info

Which option did you choose? I chose HK Air Post and it was $12 for shipping. lol $34 shipped

I’ve got a couple old laptops laying around. Downside is they likely don’t have very good battery life since they were ones they were getting rid of at work due to their age.

haha that’s what happened to me. I bought that little Acer for $190 or whatever it was. Works great. I’d hate to use it full time though…keyboard is so small.

exactly, that’s why I was confused by Joe’s $46 total.

Mine was $30 all in because we bought 3 of them (shipping discount on multiple units). It arrived in no time flat.

I’m buying the Asus Eee 1018p. Buying a nicer one since I’ll probably use it a lot around school. I hate lugging around this big ass Dell.

My cable just came in today. Very nice quality for the price…now how will I install that disc on a computer with no optical drive? hmm.

You won’t. Use it as a coaster for shotglasses and download the software from the site. Use 10.6 I think. The other ones are buggy as fuck.

lol. Because I’m 19 I only drink shots?

I just ordered my netbook off ebay. Asus Eee 1018p in black.

No, its a mini disc isn’t it?

Yeah it is. It will fit a beer glass of any sort just fine

You shouldn’t be drinking, that’s wrong, I’m gonna tell on you. . .

.

.

damn, gotta go get another beer, I guess I’ll do it later.

joe did you get the good software? need me to send you a link? I sent it to axel…maybe he can share it. I can’t find the email.

Hey guys – first post and already asking for help!

Okay, so I bought from ecutool.com like a year ago after reading about the cable on another site. In any case, I never got around to actually using it…finally unpacked it today!

I got version 809 of the cable and ran the 10.6 version of the software on 32-bit OS computer. Plugged the cable into my RS4’s port and saw an LED on the cable turn on for an instant and then off. Then, when trying to do a port test, it came up with the following (I think I posted an image in my album)

Port Status: OK
Interface: Found!
Type: Ross-Tech HEX-USB
Status: Not plugged into Car!

Okay, so is my cable bad? Should the LED on it be lit when it is connected? I disconnected/reconnected a bunch of times, tried it with ignition in “on” position, car on, car off, etc. Came up with the same problem no matter what.

Also, just confirming…the 10.6 version of this software is “full”, right?

TIA!

10.6 is too new for your cable I believe.

Try to use one of the older versions of the software.

You could also try to backdate your computer (make it jan 1 2011 for 10.6) first.

Make sure you don’t update from the download/update prompt.

I have to backdate my computer for it to work. It says “VCDS out of date!” if I don’t and it locks everything from being used

Hmm…I guess I can try and older version of the software. Not sure if there was anything older in the link you posted previously though. Any ideas on where to get the older, but full, software? I just checked my invoice and I bought the cable on 5/25/10 (wow, didn’t realize it was that long ago!) and it was the V812.4 interface.

Also, I did set the computer to Jan 1, 2011.

Should the cable’s LED light up? I am wondering if I have a bad cable. Also, it is kinda disappointing but I don’t see a similar cheap cable on their site anymore if I need to buy a replacement.

812.4 is the one I bought and then gave to AXEL

Hopefully he chimes in (or has chimed in on this thread on what software you can use)

My cable finally came in today! So now I just need some type of laptop or netbook with windows 32 bit??
Any suggustions ??

For a dedicated vagcom laptop, I would suggest either a cheap netbook or a secondhand laptop off kijiji/craigslist/ebay. It doesn’t need anything fancy something dual core with a clock of around 1.6ghz should be fine.

Argh. So, I verified that my cable was lighting up (when plugging into the car port it goes from red to green) and tried 4 different versions of the software (v814, v908, 10.6 and 11.2) and none is working. The 814 and 908 don’t even detect the adapter and the 10.6 and 11.2 detect it but say it isn’t connected to the car. How frustrating. I tried a bunch of different dates and am running on a 32-bit version of win 7.

So, I don’t really know what else to do at this point. Can anyone recommend an alternate cheap cable on the ecutool.com site or have a working one for sale?

the one you have is great…gotta figure it out,

the rest of us love it…but we have all had trouble with it getting started.
