Fenixgoon's Build Thread

WOW what a journey. Great notes on the connectors. How crazy is that with the connector backing off. Not something you hear about every day.

i’m wondering if some brakleen or something else wound up inside the connector while i was cleaning that area. ah well.

took the car out today. it performed admirably, minus the AC. was sooooo good to hear the engine wind up. and it’s a damn fine looking car. got pics to prove it (especially anyone concerned about a replacement grille. blacked out FTW).

Wow clean and I don’t see this color often, thanks for sharing. That grille is calling my name LOL.

anyone else have issues with starting the car after everything has warmed up? a quick google fu suggests it’s a heat soak problem. not terribly surprising :-\

just wondering if there’s anything that can be done

Can you explain more about whats happening. When you say issues. like what.

i just got a new battery installed and after driving the car for a decent amount of time, the starter motor would have difficulty starting the engine up. this has happened on 2 or 3 occasions now.

a few things i realized today:

  1. it’s a new battery. it’s probably been sitting on a shelf for a while, and i certainly haven’t driven the car enough to restore the battery to full charge.
  2. with all the engine components and wires being warm, the battery has a more difficult time running the starter motor (increased internal electrical resistance). if it’s a drained battery (see above), all the better/worse
  3. bad alternator could explain low charge battery (need to check voltage @ idle). with all the work i’ve done, changing an alternator is no problem
  4. bad starter is a potential cause, but right now is not the easiest to check, and also the least likely culprit for the moment.

so really i need to drive the car more. i put the battery on a tender and it went back to full charge, fired up this morning (cold) no problem. i parked after driving, so i didn’t do any “warm” starts to check #2. #3 is an easy check…once i find my multimeter.

so, my problem could be much ado about nothing. only time and some testing will tell.

ok cool keep us posted. ITs good to hear that getting the battery up to charge helps.

FINALLY got my exhaust on. I went with the milltek partially resonated because I got it on a steal of a price (1300). gives a nice low rpm rumble that stock doesnt have, and its a little louder under load. debating on cutting the resonator for additional sound, but very happy with the system as is. Will try and cap some video over the weekend

cut the resonator out.

won’t be sorry.

Yeah Millteck is the same size as stock. So your not really gaining much power wise but also sound wise you can cut out the resonator and not have a negative impact. Usually you need to worry about drone but it seems from reports its not too bad.

Alright so after moving up to PA from TX, I finally got around to checking the voltage at the terminals with the engine running. 13.9V. Is this within normal range? Most times I hear people say 14.4 (but if it’s 14 ± 10%, then 13.9 is well within that).

I also picked up a car-grade battery charger (vs my motorcycle trickle charger) so I can keep the battery topped off even if there’s a slow electrical drain somewhere.

I think at this point it is partly a heat soak/starter motor issue. As long as the car is cold and the battery charger it fires right up. Its only when I’ve driven it for an extended period that it has starting issues. I’ve read fixes ranging from a new starter motor to heat shielding to thicker gauge wiring.

My car had a Takata airbag so i took it in for recall service today. I told the dealer “yeahhhh keep the engine running or let it cool off for a while because once it’s hot you won’t be able to start it without a jump pack”

Fun times ;D ;D
