Finally getting ECU to JHM but all is not as it seems...

So I got down to the dirty business of removing my ECU. Here’s my approach to the annoying driver’s side rear bolt (for the n00bs out there):

And then I got my ECU out, rotary tool at the ready…

Wut. Someone’s already done it. Deffo DIY grinding marks. Am I already tuned? Anyway of telling from VAGCOM? There’s no indication on the ECU itself.

Interesting. If you have a JHM tune, it should appear on VAG COM. If it is something else, probably not. Did you pull the ECU out of the cage?

Well no other tune required removal of the ECU besides the JHM tune, so I’d say you were tuned. That or the ECU was replaced and that’s actually the way the dealership does it.

In VAGCOM it will clearly show JHM on the top right in the engine module

wow i didnt know that i so need a vagcom cable

Yep ECU is naked. Gonna VAGCOM tomorrow before I send the blighter off. Interesting, I hadn’t considered that Audi might do it this way although I would think they would replace the bolts with single use ones?

Yeah you would think the dealer would have a more professional way of doing it. Then again, that whole box it sits in is overkill. I had to cut mine open on the sides because the bolts wouldn’t budge. Called and asked JHM if I need to buy a new cage and they said it’s not even necessary. Just set the ECU in and put the strap over it.

Ryan - just get the ECU Tool one. Mine was $45 shipped with access to a full download of the software. works flawlessly

Yeah, depends on the dealer and the tech. Some will take the time and do it right, others just want to get it done.

If it has a JHM tune you should see data like this in the information section -

4.7L V8/5V JHM.SG

From what Ive seen in searching the JHM ECU will have a JHM sticker on it???

I’m sure it’s not a JHM tune because I have piggies and CEL lights/codes for the absent precat.

Anyone knowledgeable enough to be on this site should own a vag-com. I’m not trying to be an ahole but seriously guys get the damn thing. Its one of the most necessary “mods” for our cars and the unofficial ones are cheap as hell.

^^+1 especially with the cheap unofficial one available. Don’t pay full price (in GBP in my case) for the the Ross Tech one.

I paid full price >:(. I have an excuse though, I bought the cable when it first came out in the late 90s before all the copys came about. Once you have it upgrading to a new cable doesn’t cost that much.

In an effort to not be a total nub, I am looking to get a VCDS, bit the ross-tech site has tons of options. From what I understand, I just need a cable/adapter for my B6 to go to my laptop, then I can DL all the software needed from ross-tech? Can i DL that even if I get a knock-off brand? Is there a good site for the “unofficial” one?

Thanks, and sorry for the basic shit 101 question :-X

Haha. There’s no stupid questions…only people who feel stupid because they don’t ask questions.

You can get one here for a B6: http://jhmotorsports.com/shop/catalog/vag-cable-generic-usb-p-127.html?osCsid=ac59151b3ebfdad0be0dbcf0a9d41e2f

+1, this isn’t AZ lol. I’d rather people ask “dumb” questions rather than assume something. Especially with the wealth of bullshit out there, like when you search AZ/QW/Vortex.

Does this give any clues to whether there’s a tune in there?

Well, definitely not a JHM tune on there. I cannot say if there is something else, but it really doesn’t matter. Hurry up and ship the ECU out ;D. I am interested in hearing your feedback once you get it back.

Looks stock to me.

@SlideWays
I bought a $10 cable off ebay before really researching, and ended up only being able to use an old version of vag-com v409. It’s ok for reading and clearing codes, but def spend a little more and get a better cable.

So as I understand it, the ebay knock-offs are hit or miss sometimes? Would rather just pony up a few bucks more and get a “reputable ripoff” from JHM, unless I’m misunderstanding the info from bangomans post and wolf’s warning.

All software/how-to’s are included or downloadable though? Just want to make sure I understand how to clear codes and data log for the future. JHM says they’re designed for XP and sometimes vista. I guess my 7 laptop is no bueno, unless I install a dual boot OS for tuning haha. Maybe I can dig up an old laptop in the attic, i think I had one running xp/vista.

I’m using VCDS 10.63. Pretty sure it said it was an XP program but have no issues running it on W7. I’d give you a link to where I got mine but the online store no longer carries that exact one for some reason. I don’t want to recommend a cable I haven’t used or one a reputable company hasn’t vouched for.
