How many tenths do you get by putting it in dynamic versus auto? Once I know I have a viable clutch alternative that I can afford, I’ll hit the strip more and learn how to launch my car. Until then, my 6MT won’t be the one. After then it still won’t be the one.
I dunno about this “not being able to launch” bit you guys keep saying. I don’t see Pete complaining… From the guys I saw at ATCO, Vitaliy launched awesome…too bad for him about the slave cylinder.
All I’m saying is it can be done. Even a high 1.8 or low 1.9 60’ in any of your cars on 100 octane should give an 11 second run. It’s just that nobody has ever really done it right, or didn’t have all the goods yet, or came on pump gas…
I’m not saying it can’t be done. I’m saying I can’t do it without enough practice first. To get enough practice, I’ll probably have to go enough to wear out my clutch. How much do you think the south bend or APR one will cost?
Pete replaced his clutch, and never went to the dragstrip on his stock clutch. So I’m not sure where you get ‘I don’t see Pete complaining’ from.
The b8 clutch is, from the looks of it, not so awesome for modified cars. Although the b6/7 cars weren’t making as much torque as the b8 cars, the b6/7 guys seemed to stay stock with far fewer problems. Even still I have never seen so many clutch failures on an Audi platform as I have with this one.
We have what… Ten guys out of forty on the quarter mile list with a manual? Meanwhile there are about half the owners on the forum who have a manual. That’s weird.
Also weird is that there are so many guys who have destroyed their clutch. Co side ring the s5 platform has been around longer and uses the same clutch you could look to them for information. I have. The resounding opinion is that the clutch just isn’t very good, is prone to slipping after even a few passes at the strip. They’re making less torque than the b6/7 guys were/are. My modified b7s4 ran 12.9-13.0 @ 107 pretty consistently and probably made about 30-40 ft lbs of torque more than any all motor s5 out there. I was in stock clutch and launched it over one hundred times. I had something like fifty passes on it at the strip, another fifty or more elsewhere, 100,000kms of driving on it (40:60 hwy:city), and it was fine. I haven’t heard of any b8 stock or modified that had nearly that much out of a stock clutch.
Add to that the aftermarket options don’t seem much better. Tough to say.
I dont understand it either. My stock clutch was toast at around 9-10K and I had only launched my car once while I was racing my buddies DSG, we just wanted to see how it compared to his car with launch control. I put 62K on my stage 2 A3 before my lease was up, I launched that car between 700-800 times atleast. I would do 20-30 burnouts a day in that thing and the clutch wasn’t slipping when I gave it back. That thing was impressive as hell.
Was the a3 fwd? It’s easier to overwhelm the traction on a 2wd car, whereas on the awd cars its a bit tougher to do so, and the ckuth can sometimes give before the tires do.
Still does t explain all the guys having problems. Some of them came from other awd audis, and some of them aren’t abusing the clutch at all.
The guy with the Russian sounding name who was with us at the strip is a good example. Guy looked very responsible, wasn’t a hooligan who beat on his car. Anyway his clutch was already acting up at something like thirty thousands kms, before the dragstrip. Then it just got worse with a couple of launches. We have his ru s on video…it’s not like he was slipping it like crazy. He has been driving manual cars his whole life.
JimmyBones thinks the pressure plate is the weak point
ya it was FWD, but I didnt abuse the clutch on my car either. I launched it 1 single time in 9-10K miles and my clutch was completely toast. I did shift the shit out of my car when I would race and Im sure that isn’t good.
