Had never seen this before from Tiger. Funny shit:
That’s pretty good.
I’ve never seen that either.
wow. Sean Foley went from being laughed at 10 years ago as a young CPGA instructor at Glen Abbey when he said his goal was to have 3 students from the top 50 in the world golf ranking…to working with Stephen Ames a few years later…to adding Sean O’Hair, Hunter Mahan, Justin Rose, Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood…to this.
He is now TURNING DOWN the top players in the world.
That’s an incredible 10 year journey.
Foley too full to add Donald to stable of players
By Will Gray Sep 10, 2013 3:19 PM ET
In the midst of what he described Tuesday as a “very hard” year, Luke Donald made headlines last month when he opted to break ties with longtime swing coach Pat Goss. Speaking from Conway Farms Golf Club, where Donald is a member and where he will join 69 other top-ranked players in the field for this week’s BMW Championship, the Englishman indicated his attempt to join up with noted instructor Sean Foley was rebuffed.
“I really hadn’t given it a thought who I would change to until after the Open Championship,” explained Donald, who after reaching No. 1 in the world last year now enters this week’s event ranked No. 54 in the FedEx Cup points race. “I was very impressed with Sean’s guys and how they strike the ball: Hunter (Mahan), Tiger (Woods) obviously, Justin (Rose). Those guys hit a lot of quality shots.”
Donald indicated that he spoke briefly with Foley about the possibility of joining forces, but was told that the instructor simply didn’t have an adequate amount of time in his already busy schedule to make an addition to his high-profile stable of players.
“He didn’t think, considering what he had on his plate, that he could give me 100 percent of the commitment I needed,” noted Donald. “I told him I wanted to work hard and I wanted to put in a lot of time, and he was worried … that he wouldn’t be able to give me that 100 percent commitment.”
According to Donald, the decision came with no hard feelings between the two men.
“I totally understand that. He has a young family; I have a young family,” he added. “It takes a lot of time. He’s very dedicated to his game.”
Sak - I did not know that Foley was a teaching pro at Glen Abbey. Native Canadian?
So who’s going to win the President’s Cup this week? Does it even matter? It’s always seemed to me that this was just a filler for the Ryder Cup.
Yeah he was there for years.
Not sure. Smart money says the us. The international team sucks (by comparison)
The US will most likely win. But I’d prefer a rematch of last year’s Ryder Cup - what a choke that was.
I wonder what Donald’s plan is going forward. He dumped his longtime swing coach, and Foley turned him down. Lol. I think he has Justin Rose envy.

Donald will be OK. Although he hits it short and real crooked off the tee, which is usually a recipe for a mental breakdown on TOUR. See Henrik Stenson circa 2009-2012 for an example of what I’m talking about.
Or Ian Baker Finch
Or David Duval
Or Steve Stricker
etc.
All of those guys were top players who lost the driver, and then dropped hundreds of places in the OWGR, and then either walked away permanently or temporarily. All the tour players who truly lose their mind and disappear from the game…it’s not their putting that puts them down for the count. The putting yips is tough, but manageable. Just ask Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer etc. No, if you start spraying the driver left right left, you disappear real quick. Two way miss on those tough courses means you’re going to throw down lots of 73s (or worse) and that means MC MC MC MC. Anyone ever see Ian Baker Finch hit it out of bounds left from 1 on St Andrews? Impressive feat. IT’s about 120 yards left of centre.
Pretty rare for the guys who do lose that to come back. Steve Stricker is one who did it. Henrik Stenson too to a certain extant , however I think he just decided to use a strong 3 wood instead of really rehabbing the driver yips. Lee Westwood was #3 in the world a long time ago and then started spraying the driver and fell down into the 300s. He came all the way back to #1. Now he’s struggling again and has jumped in with Foley.
I seriously don’t think that anyone, ever, in history, has had more top players in their stable at one time than Foley has right now. It’s pretty insane. Hope he does well with Westwood. I like him.

That all seems about right to me. The meltdown I remember most is Duval’s. I still can’t believe how quickly he disappeared from the scene. Everyone in the late '90s-early 2000s was convinced that Tiger/Duval would be the new Jack/Arnie rivalry. They both dominated for a few years until Duval won The Open Championship in 2001. After that, he started missing cuts and eventually everyone kind of forgot about him. It’s pretty crazy. Feherty had a really good interview with him recently. I feel bad for the guy.
What about Butch Harmon? I think he may have had Tiger and Phil at the same time. Other than that, though, I can’t think of anyone.
And I’m not sure we’ll ever see Westwood win a major. He may turn out to be a repeat of Monty.
Man, golf is such a mental game. I just couldn’t fathom trying to do it for a career. I’d rather work a desk than try to survive making cuts. I played the TN Mid-Am this last week, had a great time, but even 3 days there was a bit of a mental grind and a disappointment when you work so hard but let one or two shots change a score entirely. Shot 74-70-78 (wind on the last day and only hit 6 greens lol).

how’d you finish up?
actually nevermind. Not even sure why I asked. T33. Very solid considering you haven’t really been playing competitively. making a cut in a tough event is impressive. Finishing top quartile is even better.
5 birdies on day one was pretty solid. Card looked like fun. WTF happened on the par 3? Other than that one hole you’re probably quite happy.
The CDN Mid Amateur was a smokeshow. Guy who won lapped the field with a pair of 63s in the mix. He finished up 19 under I believe.
30th or something. I was T-18th after day 2 (and only 2 shots from T-9th). Best part was, day one I was -3 with 3 to play. . . no penalty shots, just good ole fashion fuck-up. That’s golf though.
I’m exempt for next year which is at the Honors course though. Golf digest T29th best courses in America.
Like we talked about earlier. I don’t really “go low”. I play a very difficult course, and I do better playing difficult courses and shooting even or close, than I do throwing it a couple under par every round.
edit:
Yea short-sided myself on the par 3. Got in back rough with a green sloping away and pin on same side. Tried to hit a delicate shot into the first cut and die onto the green, didn’t make it to the green, chipped next one to 5 feet, and then 3 putted for no reason.
But yea, it was a fun day up to then. I wasn’t even worried or anything, just tried to get too cute. Then tried to play conservative on the last two holes to avoid complete collapse and small errors cost me a shot.
It was a fun event though. I like the Mid-Am. Everyone there actually has to work and has given up Pro aspirations. The Open feels like you’re just playing against college kids and guys trying to make the tour.

^^ That’s still pretty impressive, Maddog. Congrats!

Cool. Congrats. Great to get an exemption. We never get mid-am exemptions.
p.s.here are the guys winning scores from the Canadian MidAm
1 Kevin CarriganK. Carrigan Victoria, BC -5 F -20 63 68 67 66 264
CRAZY!
Garret Rank finished 3rd. He was a semi finalist at the US AM and a finalist at the US mid-am last year I believe.
