Who has one?

I just bought a 3 Black. A bit of an impulse buy.

Ideally, I want to grab a DJI Phantom and have some fun making movies with that setup, but for now, I will use it on my car and other stuff.

So, I have a few questions

  1. Who else has one? Any good tips?

  2. What are your favourite settings for various functions?

  3. Where do you mount it on your car to get good exhaust sounds etc using the built in microphones? On my car mounting the go pro on the back of the trunk beside the license plate just turns into a bass loaded drone fest. Mounting it on the trunk looking backwards results in windnoise galore as the wind comes over the car and drills the gopro

  4. Anyone get an external microphone setup? The stock microphone is frankly dogshit. My GoPro came with 1 case which is waterproof. Great but the side where you would connect an external microphone is sealed in so I’m thinking I need a second case with a hole there…or I have to buy a second case and drill a hole.

  5. Is there some way to mount this to a normal tripod? I haven’t really looked too far into it, but is there a threaded mount included? Or is that something I need to buy?

Anyway, let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas. Post videos too.

I have made a couple exhaust videos and they’re terrible so I will work on improving. Here’s one showing my dog. I literally ripped the packaging apart (it’s on the counter ), popped in a card and filmed walking over to her.

3 Black here.

You’ll want the suction mount and try to use a tether for backup.

You can get a “standard” tripod mount, I carry a small flexible tripod on my kit.

I usually keep it on 1080P 60 unless I need to film longer clips.

The case thing pisses me off, especially if you want to do long time lapse and keep it plugged in for power. You have to drill a second case.

Buy another battery.

I store/carry in a pelican 1300.

I have a Hero2 HD. Always use the case with the holes in the back for audio or you will be watching a video with no sound. The audio on them is terrible so considder an external mic.

The suction cups are no joke. I didn’t trust them at first but they never fail.

Buy another battery. Mine kills the battery in about 2 hours.

You’ve already used mine to know, no? Suction cup all the way. I have that on my roof and no problems up to 200 km/hr. Some point over that speed, the non-serrated pivots seem to slide back occasionally.

Low on the door fender facing forwards or backwards gives the dukes of hazard look. Fun.

I have the GoPro 1 so no external mic, and the internal mic sucks. I’ve sometimes used the iPhone for sound in-car and it’s better, dubbed it afterwards (see NSX Mosport video). But I’m sure you could find a decent in-car external mic location to get decent “indoor” exhaust sound without wind.

Hero3 White. Used it once at Shannonvile.

There’s a couple of GoPro apps that I have on the iPad that allow full remote control and download or viewing of the captured movies, which is great to have - no dismounting the camera necessary.

Highest res mounted on the dashboard was good but I didn’t capture my shifts, the rev counter or speedo so not a great location. If you use the full waterproof case, the sound is muffled so definitely use the open case for better sound. I didn’t try mounting it outside the car but will next year. Plus you can’t charge the camera with the waterproof case either so you need a full charge.

Haven’t tried an external micro yet but planning to play around a lot more next year. Not sure about a full tripod mount either.

I’ll post the vids soon - it was a rainy day so I had the a/c on full and the wipers too = noisy audio and not perfect video. But it was a first try so more to come next season.

I have the first gopro HD hero and I used it quite a bit when I tracked my B8 S4.

For I side, I liked sticking it on the sun roof. Would capture the speedo and everything outside from the windshield.

Outside, I put a mount on the underside of the front splitter. Nice sense of speed. For the rear, I liked mounting it beside the rear license plate. Captures the exhaust sound really well. Mounting above the rear windshield is fun too.

Though my other favorite mounting location is just behind the rear wheel. Looking at the rear wheel fender, I’d mount it at the 2 o’clock position facing forward. You get to see the front wheel turn and clipping the apex at fast speeds.

I have a hero 2 with the wifi adapter.

I’d definitely recommend an external mic (wind noise sucks) and a ram suction-cup mount (best accessory). I always shoot on 1080 (or is it 720?) anyway I use it on the highest setting. I mount it to windows/windshields inside and out…

It came with the suction cup, waterproof case, back door with openings, a few other little things.

Joe what was the microphone you bought again? I went to a local camera shop but all they had was $200+ microphones for video cameras and they’re huge…and will not work with mounting on a car

Psychotik…got any videos of your RS5?

Not yet. Will have plenty of footage of track events this coming season though.

Think I might pop over to a local electronics store and pick this external mic up:

I’ve been told the best place to mount the mic is the rear bumper… Will do some testing this week… Hopefully the exhaust note in the M3 doesn’t disappoint… ;D

I think the in car sound in the M3 is the best ever. Get some of that going WOT through a few gears.

If you find that external mic, let me know. I went to Future Shop and they had squat. Henry’s had really good stuff not applicable for us. The Source is next on my list.

I’m heading there in a bit. I’ll let you know if they have them in stock.

come to think about it I should have picked this sucker up last week. I was in a 680hp+ M3 over the weekend and I’m sure this setup would’ve made for great WOT video pulls… :frowning:

With all the manufacturers going artificial sound, maybe one of them will give us a sound output port for making movies lol

nice. $22.99

I have a Hero2 HD. I don’t use it enough but at the strip I go with the suction cup mount on the sunroof inside the car. Gets the cabin, you can see your shifts and down the track. Just need to remember to put the orientation to upside down. The LCD backpack is useful to make sure you’re getting the right angle but kills the battery pretty quick. I think I usually record on the 720p 45fps quality.

Without using an external mic I found the best sound to have the camera facing down towards a tailpipe, suction cup mounted to the trunk with the open back.

You’ll also need a mic adapter from Gopro…another $20

what does the adapter do? mono to stereo?

This is what’s so awesome about the 3…there’s an app and it communicates over the wifis with your phone.

This example photo is on an iPhone which I wouldn’t recommend…dangerous to look at those tiny little iphone screens. I use a Samsung Note.

You can also adjust all of the settings easily without scrolling through that awful little beep beep beep menu on the gopro itself.

Hero 3/3+ don’t have 3.5mm mic inputs, they sell a USB to 3.5mm adapter for stereo mic input.
