Oh gottcha!

You’ll also need a mic adapter from Gopro…another $20
what does the adapter do? mono to stereo?
If you have a GoPro 2 I believe there is not only a 3.5 mm port (smart) but a hole in the case to allow you to plug in while it’s held in the case.
Thge go pro input hole for your microphone on the Go Pro 3 and 3+ is actually, annoyingly, a mini USB port. So you need a mini USB to 3.5mm adapter…and then you plug the microphone into that.
But…to use it, you need to drill a hole in your go pro case.
I’m going to either DIY a cable or buy something like this…allows you to plug in to the miniUSB spot and close up the existing Hero3 Black case that I have.
How fucking stupid though eh?
JimS4:I have a Hero2 HD. I don’t use it enough but at the strip I go with the suction cup mount on the sunroof inside the car. Gets the cabin, you can see your shifts and down the track. Just need to remember to put the orientation to upside down. The LCD backpack is useful to make sure you’re getting the right angle but kills the battery pretty quick. I think I usually record on the 720p 45fps quality.
Without using an external mic I found the best sound to have the camera facing down towards a tailpipe, suction cup mounted to the trunk with the open back.
This is what’s so awesome about the 3…there’s an app and it communicates over the wifis with your phone.
This example photo is on an iPhone which I wouldn’t recommend…dangerous to look at those tiny little iphone screens. I use a Samsung Note.
You can also adjust all of the settings easily without scrolling through that awful little beep beep beep menu on the gopro itself.
The wifi adapter that came with my Hero 2 has the same functionality with the app. I think the big differences between the two is 1080p recording capability and a better mic. But I got my kit for under $200 so I’m not complaining.

+1. Though you can always switch the video right-side up with a iMovie or other software. Perhaps the app on the new Hero3 takes care of that.

Or buy a skeleton case…another $50
Am I right to assume that once the external mic is connected the internal mic is bypassed? I have a few different cases and would prefer to leave the waterproof one intact.
you mean or buy a skeleton case for $50 + $20 GoPro adapter cable lol.
I like the camera being protected in the case
Here’s what I’m talking about…much more sensible to me.

Or I would buy a 3+ case and drill into it and use a regular adapter rather than the hacked DIY one. They’re a more snug fit, and the case is smaller externally (the cameras are identical between the 3 and 3+).

yessir, it kills the built in feed
Just picked up the mic. Damn thing is tiny! lol! You get 6m of cord though so that’s good. Anyway, I’ll post up some videos once I’ve had a chance to use it.

I wonder if you can run a splitter and have simultaneous in-car commentary…that would be pretty cool in a track scenario

I read that you can… I wonder how many times it can be split before the quality of sound becomes impaired? Ideally, you’d want to have 3 mic’s (1-inside, 1-rear bumper, and 1-underneath the hood)

snap, 6 metres? That’s awesome. I was thinking I would need an extension cord.

I will do an unboxing video for you tomorrow like the hipster geeks when they get their new iPhone after lining up for weeks.
I will wear some skinny jeans, fancy glasses and desert boots, while blasting arcade fire in the background.

plug -> 20’ cable -> “inline thingy” -> 3’ cable -> mic
P.S sorry if that steals some of your thunder Saki… You can still rock the skinny jeans, fancy glasses and desert boots though… ;D
I want my unboxing video NOWWWWWW
saki are you going to the store or mail ordering? If you go to the store, get me one (serious). I’ll pay you in haggis and chips. $10 shipping is ridiculous.
The irony is the shop is right by where I met 2000S4 the other day to buy his winters.
If you guys want to schedule a meeting I can pick up a few of these mics and bring them along for whoever wants one, just let me know?
I ordered and shipped it on my puro account. Could have added one for you.
Had to buy a skeleton case so no videos for a bit… :-[
