Hidden Horsepower; Stock Intake + Silencer

Video never hurts ;D

Yea I’ll be picking one up for my next replacement (just put a new oem one in a couple months ago though)

aFe 31-10118 - Pro Dry S

I like this filter a lot, high quality materials and I remember the intake sound changing from the increased flow compared to OE filter.

Just remembered my computer broke :frowning: lol

I was thinking about picking one of the AFIs up

Hi Zingo,

Forgive me for being such a noob, but Im having a little trouble doin your intake mod…

Here are some issues I ran into.

  1. I can’t figure out how to get that smaller diameter hose off the front side of the air filter housing. I think I may have broke it because now it rotates (but is that part of taking it off?).

  2. Where does that smaller diameter hose lead to? How do you disconnect it from there?

  3. Is the last allen screw (the 3rd one, not counting the two visible in your pics) facing the fire wall?

  4. I think Im limited by my tools because the space is very tight. For example, the last allen screw.

  5. Would it be easier to take off the right front wheel to see where there intake leads into the fender?

  6. Finally, Im not quite sure how take off the wiring off the MAF sensor AND I cant figure out how to undo the clamps. But I figure, by either disconnecting that wire or disconnecting the MAF section, then I can get the last section before the manifold off easier. (hope that wasnt too wordy or complicated)

***I got as far as undoing the initial intake tract and snow screen as well as openning the air box and disconnecting it from the MAF’s left side (passenger side).

Thanks! I appreciate anyone else’s input as well.

  1. I took that off a long time ago and I believe I actually broke it off

  2. I’m not entirely sure. That piece is sitting in my engine bay, I do have a cheap cone style filter on it that came with my ram air intake. It will be fine sitting in your engine bay though. It is actually zip tied to the rear of
    My headlight housing

  3. the last screw is facing up, the best way is to take off the throttle body tube off. Once you have it out of the way you will have more access.

  4. I used an exteansion and just the Allen heads. Should be able to get that with what you got

  5. no, no need for that what so ever.

And 6) you can take off both ends off the connections to the MAF, ie hose that leads to throttle body, and air box. From there you can leave it tucked up out of the way. The Audi clips are funny but you can pop them up with a screw driver, just don’t be too forceful.

Have you actually taken the air box out yet?

Zingo,

Thanks for the swift reply. I think I know what to do now.

I didnt want to get the air box out until I figured how to get the small diameter hose off… Btw, what does the hose provide. I also noticed that its flow/supply comes in after the air filter. Whats up with that?

No problem man, I aslo found that odd.

  1. if it is pulling air in behind the filter, it has to be clean air because if it were sucking in dirty air than what’s the point of having it behind the filter?

  2. what my guess is, is that that piece actually pulls air out of the air box, limiting airflow further. Though I don’t see how that would work as that would mean the throttle body is pulling in air, along with that pipe. 2 suction points? Doesn’t make much sense to me? Next time I have a little time under the hood I’ll try and snoop where that thing goes. My best guess is it is just a reliever, so the box is not pressurized, just like the outlet in the fender

I see, I see.

Ok. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t too important. Im hoping to continue tomorrow. My saturday is turning out to be busy. Thanks again.

For peace of mind go pick up one of those small cone filters from Autozone. Shouldn’t be but a couple bucks

Oh, does it have to be vented? I was just gonna blank it off as well.

I just remembered something. You mentioned in your initial post that taking off the section right before the throttle body makes it easier to take off the silencer after unscrewing the zip joint.

How is that section mounted? I think there’s a bolt on top… what else?

I have no idea honestly about that piece

But for the throttle body tube, there is one on top I believe, and then one located in the back facing the fire wall. On the coolant tank side

I did some research and Im certain that the smaller diameter hose which is connected to the 3.0 air box is a supply line for the secondary air pump.

Anybody heard of this before? Apparently it has to do with emissions. As many of you may know, a warm catalytic performs better than a cold one (ie cold engine starts/ warm up phase). The secondary air pump takes air from the air box (this explains why its flow is taken after the air filter- so clean air) and blows it through the catalytic in an effort to heat it up more quickly.

Im a little confused and concerned about it. Why would you blow ambient air into a cold catalytic when both air and cat are probably at the same temperature before starting the engine. Unless Audi heat soaks the airbox (it is right next to the right exhaust manifold) and therefore heats the air inside it…

Anyone follow? Btw I finally found an epoxy I feel is strong enough and just blanked off the opening which leads to the fender…

Damn good research man. Well I’m not entirely sure what the reasoning behind that is. Anyone doing this mod, pick up the cheap cone style filter from autozone and strap it on there.

Looking at my engine bay and seeing the new spot of that connecting, the way it is set up actually, if you post is correct (not doubting you lol) then it will serve that purpose even better.

Haha no worries!

For sure. The cone filter is def a smart substitution  AND I totally agree, the “hotter” air will be directly sucked in.

Exxxactly lol well here is what I am talking about and how it is sitting in my bay

Nice detail shot. That works just fine!

Would you mind posting a pic of that? I was going to ask if that path was necessary at all…

Pic of what sir?

ajavier’s pic of the fender intake hole, or lack thereof

I THINK he is talking about that piece on the air box, but I could be wrong lol
