I live my life one quarter mile at a time.

Well I finally had success (partial) in the 1/4 mi.

The Past
Earlier this year I had my first attempt at the quarter mile, I went with a few other 2.0t B7 guys. I ended up making a rookie mistake that made me realize I needed to swap out my clutch disk.
I had been running a Vast Stage 3 clutch disk sandwiched in between a JHM flywheel and pressure plate. Well I broke rule #1, always turn off traction control before launching. I went into a 6000 RPM launch, with traction control on, and instantly the gears felt destroyed. It was impossible to get into gear, Well after spending an hour or so with Jake@JHM on the phone, we both decided it would be best to take it home and figure out the issue. I took it home, dismantled and found two issues. My pressure plate bolts had come loose, I was shocked, I had used blue loctite. The second issue was much more serious, the Vast clutch disc had begun to separate, the rivets weren’t holding it together (a common problem with the in house riveting). So I ordered up a JHM stage 4 clutch, Installed it, broke it in over the past month or two, used red loctite on all the bolts, and I’m glad to say she held together this time. Luckily the JHM kit took the beating like a champ, the weak link was that vast disc.

Fast Forward
I woke up today, its a wednesday, Test and tune at Bandimere speedway, $30 entrance. Jeez I’d love to go but 8500-8900 DA all day…101* F weather…Of course its been like this for a month. And I’m feeling good about it. After all its a beautiful day today.

Well I finished up work early today, and took off on a 100 mi drive into Denver. Right off the bat, bad luck, one of my intake couplers blew off. I haven’t touched the car in a week or so, injury related so I figured standard maintenance yada yada. Pull over and fix it. Luckily I had my trusty bag of tools.

Cool no more issues all the way into Denver.

Drop off my tools at home(MISTAKE!) my laundry, and just take my laptop in case I need to VCDS.

Results

I got 5 runs in, First run.

Yikes…slower than Jake’s car in time and speed, then again it is 8700 DA vs Jakes 233 DA…Then Jake texts me to remind me how much I suck at launching. 2.8 60FT!!!

Alright second run, try to launch a little harder then this happens.

Blown coupler…

Watch in Fullscreen, mute to hide my pottymouth

Third run - same results as first run, better launch, miss fourth gear…noob

Fourth run - MONEY!

Much Better! Pick up a ton of speed and cut almost a full second off my original time. But my launch still needs work. Launch even harder for run 5

Fifth run - damage.

So much for needing a helmet, blew the same intercooler hose for a third time in that day. I had just tightened it as much as possible. Time to get a new clamp. But wait…whats that at the end? Low coolant light!!!

Good think I left all my tools at home or else this wouldn’t be a challenge.
Well I’ve got the basics. a t30 driver, a 10mm deep socket with extension, a 3/8th socket wrench, and some channel pliers that the Bandimere parts store employee was kind enough to let me borrow.

I need to remove the intake manifold, and fuel pump to get to the back of the engine to see where its leaking coolant. This is not going to be easy…

But somehow it’s doable.

here’s the culprit…I must be making so much coolant pressure that the hose that goes to the heater core exploded right off and drained my coolant reservoir, luckily it doesn’t seem like I lost much, so the block should still have some coolant.
Greasy Iphone pic.

Might as well check that cam follower while I’m in here.

Definitely needs replacement. Not bad 15k life.

Put the car back together, filled up with regular water(need to flush it and refill with g13).

And the car was back to running great, even saw a double rainbow on the way home.

There are no other words other then, outstanding, outstanding results, outstanding resilience and truly a valuable contribution to the community.

Seriously, you work on your own car, talk about what really happened in the past (even if you made a mistake) and actually learn and share. If every 2.0T guy was like you, the 2.0T guys would have much faster cars. With a DA of over 8500, there are no other words but outstanding.

Knowing there are guys like you out there in the A4 2.0T world, I’m actually happy to admit, I myself, am a 2.0T owner. My 2.0T is super slow though.

Love the story telling style of the post! Fun thread, and great attitude!

Love the pic of the bumper off on the roadside. Wish I had half these skills.

Congrats on the times! That’s moving!

13.8@106 in bandimere da is amazing. Well done.

More impressive is the mechanical skills. I’m jealous.

Pretty awesome man, and you have 10 times the patience as me. I love turning wrenches, but if my car would haave issues more than once in a day I amy have left it on the side of the road to rot.

Have you looked into getting "one piece intercooler piping. Maybe send it off ant have it welded to cut down on the amount of couplers you have.

What kind of clamps do you use? all T-bolts? are the ends of your piping all beaded? I made cheap intercooler piping mistakes in the past and small things make a world of difference when it comes to preventing boost leaks or piping blow offs.

Good times with uber crappy DA, congrats! You would have picked-up a few tenths if you had a Frankenturbo but still pretty good.

Thanks for the kind words and for all your advice and encouragement, its nice to know the 2.0t isn’t a dead platform, and that there are other people out there willing to push it forward.

Thank you!

Thanks, I appreciate it.

You know what they say, practice makes perfect, lol that is my unfortunate case, I probably have some kind of record for “most times removing the bumper on any b7.”

Thanks! I am much better at turning a wrench than launching, but I’ll be going back in september, and again in october,to see if I can work on my launch. Might even make it down to Arizona to visit Derrek and get some proper DA times.

Yeah I looked into getting one piece piping made. My friend gave me the number of Apikol’s welder, and I was going to have him do it, but he got into a motorcycle accident, and ended up not working for a while, we just fell out of communication, might be something to look into now. I am using all T bolt clamps, but generally what I’ve noticed is if one clamp blows off more than once its that t bolt clamp that isn’t holding anymore, swapping it fixes the issue. Definitely need to find a long term fix for this.

haha, funniest thing I’ve read all day  I see what you did there!

Great thread mec and outstanding work. Those DAs are no joke. I’ve heard of modded B6/7 S4’s that don’t even run that quick in those conditions. I can’t wait to get up there myself. I’d say let’s meet up there sometime but it’s gonna be spring before my car will make it.

Come to az for those negative DA’s

I’ll be in Phoenix this year for Christmas. I was checking out tracks in the area last week actually and saw the 2 tracks by Phoenix are both closed :frowning:

Wow man thats very impressive all around.

That elevation has you down around 5lbs of boost vs sea level.

I wouldn’t trust the schedule for wild horse pass aka firebird. They normally have test and tune every other Saturday.

That’s the plan! brews and negative DA’s at Derrek’s hauz!

Yeah thats what CV had mentioned, Running extra boost up here to compensate for the high altitude. I certainly wouldn’t mind some sea level spool and power.

What do you drive? Lets definitely meet up, I’ll be going back to Bandimere in the next month, even just spectating is fun. But I am trying to get like 10 of my closer Audi friends to come out so we can have an Audi Drag Day! If you need any wrenching help let me know!

I wouldn’t try to race MDUBZ if I were you.

supercharged s4/rs4?

I don’t have my car back yet, but in November I’ll be picking up my B6 S4 from JHM with a freshly built motor, stage 2 s/c, and shiny new headers ;D I’ve also got some goodies waiting at home that will go in my build thread. Thanks for the offer on the help, I’m actually dying to install some things. I’ve got access to a lift through a friend so should be good times.

Maybe not for money, but nothing wrong with some comparisons. I really want to see how the DA is going to affect my car up here.

Who was the guy who bailed on his JHM stage 2 B67?

Who was the guy that came into somebody else’s thread, instigated an argument for no reason(but will be denied the pleasure), and then probably had a good chuckle to himself?

I’d actually like to request these last 2 posts be removed since they are pointing the thread in the wrong direction. Sorry mec.

I can’t tell if you’re serious. Was it you? I literally have no idea and wasn’t being sarcastic.

(P.S. turn off bitch mode! )
