Ideal Street Legal Exhaust

I’ve been contemplating this for awhile and considering it’ll be coming up within 2-3 months, I want you guys opinions.

I’m here in TX, so removing the cats isn’t realistic if I want to pass the emissions test but… a coworker of mine installed a cut-out on his Mercedes CLK 55 AMG, which brings hell itself to your ears out of a V8. What if I installed the JHM exhaust and added in the appropriate exhaust cutoffs to electronically control valve openings? Would it be too loud? Hinder performance? A typical 20-25 year old idea? LOL.

Just curious. Opinions appreciated.

“Too loud” is a subjective thing. Any naturally aspirated car that has its exhaust dump to an exhaust cutout will be very loud. Can be fun but will be very loud and obnoxious to run on the street. Would not be too loud to run on a racetrack.

It just depends on what you want and what you are comfortable with.

I personally like a nice sounding exhaust that is quiet while on light throttle or just cruising but will come alive when you go WOT.

Having a loud exhaust all the time can be very fatiguing. And having an obnoxiously loud exhaust is in bad taste IMHO.

Depends on what track?

Get JHM exhaust it’s quiet when you want it to be and beautiful melody when you get on it. If u still wish for more sound plumb some cutouts before mufflers for bypass. I removed all resonators on my last s6 and that alone with 2.75 piping and x-pipe was plenty loud.

I second the JHM endorsement. It doesn’t drone, but you can always hear it I guess. Lovely sound when you press the loud pedal.

Alternately, you can just remove the resonators behind the cats and leave the stock mufflers alone or replace with flowmasters or something.

Good luck removing the cats. They’re integrated into the headers. You’ll have to replace them to get rid of them and as far as I know, no one is selling headers for an S8/S8, and if you find someone that can fabricate them, they’ll be $2000+.

If you gut the cats into piggies, you’ll never have an issue passing inspection.

I second the JHM endorsement. People always compliment me on the sound and it sounds much much cleaner than the equivalent M cars (5/6). On the track, it’s perfect. On the street, it’s perfect (unless you’re way above the speed limit and passing a cop). Add me on IG if you want to hear sound clips and drive-bys. ( @solongfarewell_ )

i gutted my stock cats, added 200 cell magnaflow cats. made a 3" X pipe exhaust. with no mufflers…it is the most mad ass, expotic sounding engine note I have ever heard (outside an F1 or enzo etc…). It sounds very euro, very raw, very snappy. YOu knwo how AMG benz have that nasty snarly/staccatto sound? I dont like it. The V10 note is very euro race sounding, very smooth but man…the stock mufflers SUCK. they really hinder performance and throttle response. When I ran it with no mufflers, the throttle acted like a cable hi compression carb car. Instant.
Put the stock mufflers on…throttle response was hindered tremndously and the sound with no resonators is not nice through stockers. Magnaflows going on it ASAP.

Cutouts would be a good idea though. i too have some exhaust videos on IG, and working on a youtube video of the sound in stages (@greg5oh)

This is why I follow six and Greg on IG  great advice all!

Im also going to give a shout out for the JHM exhaust. The sound is everything you are going to want compiled with the performance to back it up. You can cut things off a stock catback but your just getting sound and thats going to be about it. A few ponies here and there but not too much more.

Cutting things off the stock exhaust sounds good for about a week or two and then your pissed you cant get rid of the drone and the shitty sound when you want to just drive normally. you find people in the past all had the same trend with cutting up the stocker. and thats that they first said how great it sounded and then a few weeks later you see the same people shopping for shops to put on a muffler and then some putting on resonators to make it more usable.

I know the JHM exhaust isnt cheap but for what you get. Its money well spent. You wont ever grow tired of the sound and its drone free with performance and pleasant go pedal noise when you want it. Its just enough at idle to let everyone know you have a bad ass V10 but quiet enough you can talk to your passengers in city driving or even at 80mph on the express way.

We need more drivebys and in cabin videos of this, hell might result in a few more sales

I’ll see about adding the vids I have to AR via Tapatalk later.

Youtube might be more user friendly lol. Either way let’s do it, flybys interest most

…I just tried to attach the vid via tapatalk. I’ll try YouTube later if that doesn’t work.http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5b4e47bcd6474/VID_214710204_023922_005.mp4

It worked and sounds glorious, do you have any ice racing vids?

I do have a post on IG with a bunch of them, but I wasn’t racing and I had on All-Seasons so I was in Normal mode almost the entire time so you couldn’t really hear much more than the sounds of rolling over ice. I wish I’d thought to bring a tripod to setup a camera off to the side of something. Maybe next winter I guess.

That exhaust clip sounded great.

Hows the project B6 coming along.

Thanks. The B6 is in the loving hands of JimmyBones. I need to take the time to get the tires mounted on the wheels and take them down to him. I’ve been thinking about it less and less as it gets closer to the due date (pregnant spouse).

when are you gonna get a set of CF wheels and JHM LW rotors? I’d imagine that’s the last “big” performance md for you!

Cough supercharger cough. I’ll let sixsixsix answer the rest but he is pretty content from what we have talked about. How much is a quality set of CF wheels at a reasonable price?

As far as I know, Carbon Revolution is the only company making full carbon wheels for aftermarket. They’re not cheap - I’m guessing $2500 per wheel but they weigh less than 20lbs for a 19x10" wheel. It’s insane. and they look sexy.

Lmfao $2500/wheel? Hell no.
