Ieatfishburritos, the 2nd coming..

I’m finally back in the S4 game, will document issues / help needed / progress in this thread going forward.

I flew into Seattle and picked up the car 4/17 afternoon. Nogaro / 6MT / Avant in great shape w/ 48k on the clock. No audible cold / warm knock, everything seems to work as it should. I DID not do any type of PPI, bought sight unseen from interweb in NY saying fuck it:) Seemed I should be safe for timing with this mileage.

Issues -all minor for me.
-1 key
-no floor mats
-some generic tires on back with matching tread pattern of bridgestones on front

  • Car is all stock except rnse and smoked tails. Owner 1 in california put 20k miles in 6 years = enthusiast. Owner 2 put 28k in 3 years. I’m thinking mr. california had modded the car and returned it to stock, but just a guess at this point based on tail lights. Owner 2 I can’t seem to find anything about on forums etc, assume it was not an enthusiast so maintenance is questionable for last 3 years / 28k miles.

The plan - take a week off work and drive back to NY across the country. Take my sweet time, see some scenery, become one with the car.

  1. Day 1 - Friday evening drove across Washington to Couer D’Alene Idaho. This was about 315 miles in 5 hours, no issues. * No Rattle*

  2. Day 2 - Saturday - Couer D’Alene Idaho across Montana to Dickinson North Dakota. About 12 hours at 824 miles.
    Western Montana is beautiful, lots of open highway. * No Rattle in AM*

  3. Day 3 - Sunday - Dickinson North Dakota, across Minnesota to Tomah Wisconsin. About 10 hours at 693 miles. * in morning thought I heard a millisecond of rattle at startup* Rain the last half of the day, all wipers are shot. Learn rear wiper washer not working…

  4. Day 4 - Monday - Tomah Wisconsin, across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania to NY just past Buffalo. About 13 hours at 882 miles. * No Rattle in AM*

  • Added 1 quart of oil at 2650 miles, low oil light came on. I think that is pretty reasonable considering all those highway miles at 3k+ rpm.
  1. Day 5 - Tuesday - about 3 hours and 300 miles to home. No Rattle in AM Sleep, beer…

All in all very relaxing drive. Was a little paranoid that I heard a possible rattle on day 3 morning. Has not happened since, not sure if it was real or something else.

On tap now:

  1. Fixed the rear wiper washer, nozzle jet clogged with crud. Ordered rear wiper Aero conversion kit and new wipers for front.
  2. Oil change this week with Lubro/Liqui moly, planning to change every 3k going forward.
  3. Change plugs / coil packs / air filter
  4. Acquired some floor mats
  5. Local Audi dealer which I’ve never been to has a free inspection program, going to let them look at it and get state safety inspection (Latham Audi outside Albany, if you have feedback let me know).
  6. Need to change the rest of the fluids on the car.

I’ve found a guy 2 hours from here that does timing jobs for a very fair price. Will see how it goes over the next few months if I start hearing rattle or not or I was paranoid that 1 morning. It seems pretty rare for a 50k mile car to have failure but not ruling it out. Will see what I observe.

No major plans today to go apeshit on modding immediately, have spent this years project cash on my other non audi project car.

Here she is!

Great to have you back.

A few suggestions for you. Look to see if the pre cats are knocked out. That’s the first thing that should go and is always helpful.
Consider doing a compression test. That will tell you alot.
Pull the PCV system and clean and test it.

The oil consumption is completely normal for 2500 miles. Not to mention long distance driving.

If those miles were not tampered with I would say you should be safe for a long time. The b6 cars had more issues then the b7 but that’s still normally too soon to see guide issues.

The cool thing about the timing if you need to do it. It should be the last time. The Jhm kit has upgraded parts that replace the prone to fail parts.

Lookin great. Nice post.

Thanks for feedback and advice, will follow up on pvc / compression / cat. Based on condition and carfax I really think the miles are legit. Cheers

Nice to see you on this board man and congrats on finally picking her up. Props for taking on such a long distance trip. I know very few would sack up for such adventure, but it’s well worth it( speaking from experience). Really dig those so slightly tinted tails, usually not a fan of blacked taillights, but yours are tastefully done. I think you should be fine as far as the timing system goes. Just see how it behaves as you put more mileage.

It’s funny on the tinted tails, I was never really a fan and always liked the pop from the red b6 tail lights on blue cars. I’m on the fence right now considering to replace them with a fresh unsmoked pair. Will see…

Love it! Beautiful Avant. And I love the road trip. Like you I said fuck it…bought my S4 sight unseen…no PPI flew from Salem Oregon to Cleveland…and drove her home. Took the same route you did, but heading west. No issues since ownership except for the occasional rattle. Like you, I am betting on the low milage. Found mine with 75k and a factory replacement engine in her with only 16k

That is good news. After you do the compression test look in the tech section for everyone else’s results. Post your results there too if you can.

Nice lookin car. You in NY? Upstate or Tri state?

Upstate, north of albany and saratoga springs. Where you at?

Queens. lol your pretty far. BUT if you ever wanna come down for meets or shows i can keep you posted and updated with whats going on.

Quick question on checking compression. Must the engine be warmed up to provide valid #'s or are people doing it n cold engines? Getting ready to check and have read different things online… Thanks for quick reply

Yes, you’re going to want to do it after the car has been warmed up. You’re also going to want to crank the engine at least 5 times when getting your readings. I watched the values rise as I cranked the engine and stopped when the needle stopped rising. Also, throw a trickle charger on your car too if you can. You won’t necessarily need it but it’s nice to have peace of mind knowing you won’t kill your battery.

Ok thanks. I tore everything down already and the engine is cold… plugs out, airbox off etc ::slight_smile:

Guess I’ll get it back together and do it another day :stuck_out_tongue:

No problem. Here is the official B6/7 S4 Compression Test Thread.

I wonder if there’s something you could do to save some time rather than putting everything back together just to warm it up.

I did see the thread and have watched the video a few times, didn’t see anything about requirement for warm engine but it’s probably so obvious to everyone that does this regularly it wasn’t stated. Good learning for me and it’s not too bad to put everything back together.

Thanks for your feedback today!

Maybe I’m reading in between the lines too much?

CountVohn says this right after the video link in the first post.

Might be interesting to see the difference since you already have everything out.

I completely missed that! I guess I should not be skimming these threads so fast.

Fucking love fish burritos

Ok finally had some time today to work on the car and I finally got the title so I can register this bitch, been sitting in the garage :(.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

New Plugs
New coil packs
New air & charcoal filter
New wipers, converted rear wiper to aero and unclogged the squirter (that sounds like a porn comment?)
Oil change w/ 5w40 liquimoly

Did compression today paying a bit more attention ahem to count’s instruction thread. Results not so good.

1 = 127
2 = 138
3 = 129
4 = 129
5 = 109
6 = 111
7 = 125
8 = 122

Median is 126, one cylinder seems to be much better, and 2 low. Seems to be running fine today, will start driving it more regularly. Thoughts?

How’s the oil consumption? Any smoke? Still no rattle? Check the PCV for oil. It might be time for a leak down test, borescope, and maybe sending an oil sample to Black Stone to get a clearer picture.
