Quick question on checking compression. Must the engine be warmed up to provide valid #'s or are people doing it n cold engines? Getting ready to check and have read different things online… Thanks for quick reply
Yes, you’re going to want to do it after the car has been warmed up. You’re also going to want to crank the engine at least 5 times when getting your readings. I watched the values rise as I cranked the engine and stopped when the needle stopped rising. Also, throw a trickle charger on your car too if you can. You won’t necessarily need it but it’s nice to have peace of mind knowing you won’t kill your battery.
Ok thanks. I tore everything down already and the engine is cold… plugs out, airbox off etc :
Guess I’ll get it back together and do it another day
No problem. Here is the official B6/7 S4 Compression Test Thread.

I wonder if there’s something you could do to save some time rather than putting everything back together just to warm it up.
I did see the thread and have watched the video a few times, didn’t see anything about requirement for warm engine but it’s probably so obvious to everyone that does this regularly it wasn’t stated. Good learning for me and it’s not too bad to put everything back together.
Thanks for your feedback today!
Maybe I’m reading in between the lines too much?
CountVohn says this right after the video link in the first post.
Might be interesting to see the difference since you already have everything out.
I completely missed that! I guess I should not be skimming these threads so fast.
Fucking love fish burritos
Ok finally had some time today to work on the car and I finally got the title so I can register this bitch, been sitting in the garage :(.
Here’s what I’ve done so far
New Plugs
New coil packs
New air & charcoal filter
New wipers, converted rear wiper to aero and unclogged the squirter (that sounds like a porn comment?)
Oil change w/ 5w40 liquimoly
Did compression today paying a bit more attention ahem to count’s instruction thread. Results not so good.
1 = 127
2 = 138
3 = 129
4 = 129
5 = 109
6 = 111
7 = 125
8 = 122
Median is 126, one cylinder seems to be much better, and 2 low. Seems to be running fine today, will start driving it more regularly. Thoughts?
How’s the oil consumption? Any smoke? Still no rattle? Check the PCV for oil. It might be time for a leak down test, borescope, and maybe sending an oil sample to Black Stone to get a clearer picture.
Haven’t driven it other than the trip from washington 3 weeks ago, and was 1 quart used for 3000 highway miles. I’ll watch it closely once I start driving it more.
Don’t really see any smoke while driving, saw a little after starting it when standing behind the car warming up. Had small rattle on first startup after oil change but then it’s gone and back to normal. That being said I’ve only started the car <30 times.
that oil consumption wasn’t too bad
Was the engine hot when you did the compression test?
Yep it was at normal operating temperature. From the time I turned it off to doing readings was like 15 minutes
Oil consumption is not bad at all so I’d guess the cylinders aren’t scored and the piston rings are fine. Maybe the valve cover or head gaskets need to be changed?
If you can post your results here

it will give you a good idea on how you stack up vs other motors.
The two cylinders look low. That could be a deep wall score letting compression by.
Posted in the other section, thanks for reminder.
I agree based on the numbers and community knowledge it feels like issue should be scoring and oil consumption. I need to put some regular miles on the car and monitor as I haven’t seen crazy consumption yet, plan to start daily for next month.
Yeah I’d daily it for whatever OCI you choose (3k,4k,5k miles) and check oil level during each thousand miles and see what’s the deal with consumption at the end of the cycle. How’s the VCs and PCV? Any oil leaking underneath? Also, it should be noted not all BHFs respond to the same oil equally. Over the years, I’ve seen some consume less with M1 or Motul or Liqui Molly. So you motor might “like” one oil over others, just something to keep in mind.
It’s possible the way the cylinder damage or whatever the issue is that’s causing low compression is that it might not result in extreme oil consumption. Check the oil every gas fill up. You did great on the drive home so I don’t see it getting worse.
Latest news…
-
2 full tanks of gas ran through and oil is still absolutely full.

Picked up a vag cable finally. One very odd thing I can’t figure out, the radio and navigation module cannot be communicated with. The car has an older rns-e and music info shows up on instrument cluster. Will post a full scan log in coming days.

Fixed the door handle rattle. Found a long allen wrench works really good to release the metal cover.
-Picked up the viseeo tune to air wma1000 so can stream from my phone, seems to work ok so far.
- clay’d, wax’d, cleaned the alcantara and removed the pile / fuzzies, they look like new! Need to do the leather next.
