Importing a US car to Canada... How easy is it?

There is a car on eBay I have my eye on. It is located within an 11 hour drive from Toronto. If I win, and want to import it to Canada, what do I have to do, exactly?

  • Is it easiest to have it shipped?
  • Is it simply a matter of filling out some documents, and providing them to the shipping company?

Sorry for the short response, details help. What is it, post a link. Different cars are different headaches, depending on the modifications required.

I brought my allroad from the states and it was easy but yes there’s paperwork. It doesn’t sound like you’d have a problem with modifications like DRLs, etc with your projects so far

What do you think?

Yeah, I would rather not do any mods, if possible. I see a bunch of US Vipers for sale, so I assume people bring them in quite often.

Oh. By mods, I meant that you will have to wire up daytime running lights that’s probably it for a viper.

Check the website I sent. It details the procedure. Make sure the cars had all its recalls done and you have a recall clearance letter from Chrysler. You’ll have to pay RIV $200 IIRC. File the title with the US customs at least 72 hours before import, And you’ll pay HST at the border. No duty because it’s American-made. Federalization in Canada I think happens at crappy tire still, you shouldn’t have to pay anything because that was included in the $200 you spent with RIV.

Anyway that’s the way it went down about eight or so years ago.

Thanks for the info !!!

Saki and 2000S4 have done it.

It’s very easy. I did it five years ago when it made financial sense ($10,000-20,000 savings on current s models type sense). Now it doesn’t make much sense unless you’re looking for something rare.

If you want to Google my username and importing a 2007 s4 you will find a very thorough walk through.

Perfect. Ill check out your walk through.

Thanks!

I think it helps if you have a dealer license like my gf’s dad who imports cars in from the US all the time (buys them from auctions, fixed them and resells them)

Not necessary at all.

That’s correct.

Never claimed it was necessary. Just saying it’s probably easier. Not suggesting he do anything different.

^^^it’s probably easier to scuba dive to 60 feet with scuba gear on (since we’re stating obvious stuff  )

Actually it’s easier to dive to 60ft without the breathing apparatus, just harder to get back up

I can’t even dive 15’ since I can’t equalize my ears, so importing the car is actually easier.

I personally think the whole thing about the dealers licence in Ontario is bullshit, they had (successfully I believe) campaigned to limit anyone but a dealer from selling used cars, I think you’re limited to a couple a year. Like they have any fucking integrity.

^^^same here. I get epic pressure head when I go below around 6-8 feet. Sucks because I love going underwater. I snorkel and if I go down 20 feet my head feels like it will explode. I have tried everything to ‘equalise’. Nothing seems to work

have you ever tried to go down that far without weights etc? good luck!

Same with me. Tried every trick in the book to no avail.
