nitrous is a harsh mistress. amazing that u passed your buddy just in time to get that on camera. that was quite the smoke show. youll have to pull it all apart to asses the damage but you likely need a new long block.
Yes i was spraying on that pull. And to confirm the speculation, yes, the engine is toast… an as yet to be determined piece of engine got ejected through the front of the block. Most likely a rod, but im not positive.
The RSWorx guys went to SEMA, so ill know more details when they get back.
Looking at used S4 engines, but i am also open to other ideas…
Id i do instal another S4 4.2, i will be re0installing all the current components including the nitrous kit.
Any thoughts on possible alternative engine setups are welcome.
The chassis i have is solid, and im happy with suspension etc., so i dont think ill be parting her out and starting from scratch.
Apon review a few years ago I’d noticed there was a thread on motor failure for the B6 and B7 S4s. Between the issues with the blocks and their issues it didn’t give me a good sense of comfort. I’d keep your current mods and consider looking into a built motor.
You may want to consider calling JHM as they might have a used engine for you. I know they had one with a fresh timing chain job for a very good price about 3 months ago. Definitely worth a shot.
Definitely the best way to go. I’ll have mine in less than 10 days now . They should be kicking off the full release of the built motor program very soon just so you know.
This isnt a DD for me… i use it to run errands in the city, but otherwise its a weekend trip/car meet/fun car… i have nothing planned till Christmas and then im away for two weeks for my honeymoon… I could technically do without it till late Jan.
If i can down play this to my wife somehow, a built motor may not be out of the question…
In my honest opinion it’s the only option. If you do go that route you will have a hell of a car for another 100k miles if you want to keep it that long. It looks great, you have tastefully modded the car this far and I’m sure it means something to you.
Justifying it to the other half is never easy, but if you truly picked the right one she will understand. If it burdens you financially then it may not be worth it, but you seem like a smart guy and you’ll make the right decision in the end.
Man your car was running super clean on that pass. Normally you see the nos smoke coming out the pipes when you spray. Sucks top hat about the breaking part. Your car is super clean looking if you can wait I would really suggest a built motor.
There are quite a few of us with the kit. Of those I think most of us have had the kit for several years. Zero issues. It’s hard to say anything without looking over the motor. Power wise the rods on the starter side usually are the ones to break but then you have the same rods on stock cars that break. Just recently there was a guy in Canada parting out his car because something blew a hole through the front of his motor and his car didn’t have any power adders. Earlier this year I helped a guy swap a motor due to him blowing a rod out the side. He didn’t have more then a tune and exhaust. I stopped updating the thread on Audizine with the catastrophic motor failures due to how many failures there was.
It’s a hard to try and make heads or tails of stuff like this. Kit wise jhm has lots of fail safe stuff put in so more then not the kit would have just turned off. I did some pretty silly tests on my kit due to the conversation I had with CV and him telling me and showing me the safeties. On the pass in the video you don’t see the normal nos smoke behind the car. The nitrous leaves a trail behind as just the 02 part of the n02 burns. Fuel wise if the pressure dropped too low the throttle would shut car would go into limp mode and the kit would have shut off.
I parted a stock car last year that had a whole in the block too. Drivers front a rod went right through it. Fucking thing still started too lol for about a second.
It sucks. This is more and more common where you have unexplained motor failure. I sat down one night and was going to write a long long post about the issues with these motors. Trying to do whatever I could to make sense of everything. It’s so unpopular to say what the truth seems to be. And that’s some motors are ticking time bombs and others are super solid. We know each motor is different and I don’t mean just a little different I mean big different. There is a large range of different piston sizes that can be put into these motors. There’s a wide range of different bearings. The cylinder wall tolerances vary from block to block.
Thanks for adding some insight! yeah i am hoping to get some more info with the RSW guys get back next week.
I dont think the nitrous kit caused the failure, i think it greatly accelerated an existing issue with the engine. I could be wrong through.
When you look at building out a S4 4.2, it does raise questions as to the overall integrity of the block and engine as a whole. Is it worth building?
I have asked one or two times about putting an RS4 4.2 in… nobody even seems to think its worth exploring, never mind doing… has nobody done this? I know it has two ECU’s, a different harness etc, but is it literally impossible? Does it cost more than a built out motor from JHM??
Yes the engine is definitely worth building. This has been an ongoing JHM project for years because they wanted to make it perfect before release. With the engine being built you obviously get forged pistons and rods, but you also get a sleeved block which strengthens it quite a bit. Then with the tune you get you get a ton of fail safes built in. With the updated timing gear and no pre cats, you’re talking about a whole different engine, in the sense of it’s going to be bullet proof. Also, I believe CV stated in a thread a while ago that the S4 4.2 makes more torque. Keep in mind, they’re both 4.2 V8s. I know there’s more to it than that, but for less money you can get a built engine. I’ll pm you with some more details.
