JBones's Silver Bullet B6 S4

I followed your DIY that’s on AZ and used a similar steel brush. It’s possible I didn’t go aggressive enough when honing it

An air powered die grinder works pretty well.

Wednesday, I went to install the intake manifold flapper rebuild kit but I found this:

The side of the belt that is close to the engine was frayed to the point that there was a rib missing.

So I get a hold of JHM and they tell me that there is an updated pulley that is lipped to hold the SC belt in place. It replaces the lowest pulley shown here.

I had to grind the SC bracket for the pulley to have enough clearance to spin freely. Here you can see my handiwork with a hand grinder before I covered it up with some flat black paint.

I would really like to thank JHM for getting me a response and the part out to me quickly enough for me to be able to make some drag strip passes today.

What did you run?

Jimmy you’re really pushing your S4 to its limits, glad to see you’re fixing it as fast as things break lol
What’s the offset on those 18x9 Forgestar F14s you’re running with 265/35/18 PSS? Also, are you lowered at all? And lastly did you do any fender mods in order to run that set up?

So is it safe to assume, if you purchase JHM sc kit today, it’ll come with revised/upgraded pully?

I set a new personal best. Also broke a two week old rebuilt/new OEM axle. Win some, lose some.

Hurray for the parts warranty!

I am set up to push the limits and repair my car so why not. It is fun driving fast. Plus I really like being able to go over 100 mph without the chance of being hauled off in handcuffs.

The Forgestar F14s offset is ET 30. I am running 5mm spacers up front because the tires would slightly rub on the wheel bearing housing. The car is lowered but I don’t remember what the ground to fender measurement is off hand. I think it is like 25 1/8 inches but it is somewhere in this thread if you want to look through. The left rear quarter panel rubbed slightly when I first put the wheels and tires on so I did a real minor pull. Then on my trip to California I noticed the tires rubbed from hitting all those nasty bumps on interstate 40 so I pulled all the fenders and quarter panels as far as they would go.

It is safe to say that if you ordered the SC kit now that they would send you all the updated parts. I noticed a few things with 930chas’s thread. Like the suction hose now is two pieces with a metal sleeve inside it to prevent it from squeezing down. Also 930chas told me that JHM shipped him a plug and play pigtail extension cable for the mass air flow sensor as I had to cut the old connector off and wire in with butt connectors a pigtail cable.

I’d like to see you go 115 mph and not get hauled off

Congrats on the success at the strip. Well the success with the time anyways. At least the axle is a cheap and easy fix. I’m having JHM replace both of my fronts with the hope they’ll last for at least a little bit. Either way though I’m curious if you’re still using the rear wavetrac lsd? What were your thoughts on its performance? I’ve only been in one car once with an lsd and even the owner’s opinion was that it was terrible for a daily driver. When he pulled a u turn the inner wheel would chirp and and the car would jump and when he’d turn while reversing out of a parking spot it would literally sound like shit was breaking. Overall it made the car sound like shit. Do you get any weird noises or any other downsides to using the wavetrac lsd? I’m considering picking one up as long as it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment while daily driving.

True.

I still am using the rear wavetrac lsd and the front wavetrac lsd. They work really well when installed properly and you don’t break the rest of the diff around it. I can tell you that it is fun seeing passengers panic when I go around turns really fast. They expect it to understeer into whatever was in front of us but the car goes exactly where I want it to. Never have heard any noises from the diffs even when making a U turn.

They did recently change the fluid requirement though. Now wavetrac requires either the factory fill or Motul fluids like the 75W-90 or 75W-140. I had to change the rear diff fluid to Motul 75W-90 because I was using a Redline fluid.

What lsd did the car have that you rode in? There are a few different types of lsds out there and some are more aggressive than others. I know JHM is working on a clutch type rear LSD and it should work very well like everything else that JHM does.

I think it was a fixed lsd and it was on a 240. Where did you find the front one? I’ve only seen the rear one. Either way though it definitely sounds like a good purchase. I don’t exactly expect my stock one to last very long after I get my car back ;D. How long did the install take you?

It sounds like that car had either a spool or locker. Both of those are pretty aggressive for a street car.

I sent off my front diff to wavetrac for them to make a lsd. They did but there were other problems along the way before I got the finished lsd unit in the car. Earlier in this thread I posted about it - just go back a few pages and you will find it. The front unit is listed on their website now: http://www.wavetrac.net/application.htm

The factory diffs are strong and I doubt that you will have any issues with the stock ones. It would be a good idea to change the fluid out if you haven’t done that before. I changed out the stock diffs because I could and you can get away without doing it. It is fun being able to go around corners with no understeer though.

The install took me a few days. Either way the rear diff or transmission has to come out to install the new bearing outer races. Also the new bearings have to be pressed onto the lsd and the ring gear has to be heated up to be installed onto the lsd. There is no point to installing a new lsd and reusing the old bearings. You also need new bolts for the ring gear because they are stretch bolts.

In all likelihood that would have been a clutch pack LSD versus a torsen unit. The clutch type LSD’s can make noise depending on the brand and if it was broken in properly. My guess is that the diff was not broken in properly, hence all the noise and in some cases, shuddering.

Spools or lockers, as Jimmy mentioned, are too aggressive for the street and are typically only used in drift/drag/offraod vehicles. They do not permit the wheels to rotate at different speeds from one another.

Unless JHM are working on a second type of rear LSD, the current unit they are/will be offering is a torsen unit and the first unit was already installed in my car.
