JBones's Silver Bullet B6 S4

Yes, much indeed. The manufacturer has full control here, just like different cars’ clutch setups. Between multiple manufacturers (for applications that have great support, like Jap sporty cars), you see different numbers of plates, spacings, diameters, etc. Last I checked, the common break in was something like 30 minutes of pretty much flat out driving around a figure 8 of moderate size, forcing it to lock up in both output directions and under both acceleration and deceleration. I feel like “Geez, so I have to tear up a set of decent tires just to break in my diff?” That and the more frequent fluid changes and eventual plate changes are why I’ve never liked them for street.

Let’s see what JHM comes up with, but there are already several products out there that will fit our car with some adjustment, and a Wavetrac and a Quaife that are drop in. But only if you have the 6MT - automatic cars have a different differential, designed with some different dimensions, likely due to the ring gear being a bit different in size/shape. Presumably, they wanted to keep the pinion shaft in the same bore hole, so they had to move the ring gear, and figured they’d move the landing on the diff rather than anything in the housing. But the housings have different part numbers as well, so no telling. I don’t have both housings in front of me any more, so I can’t measure them. But I do have both open diff’s I think. For sure I have metrics on them, either way, and some solid models on the computer.

Wow it has been a while since I updated this thread.

A while ago, I tore the car down to replace the alternator and AC compressor. While in there I thought it would be a good time to recoat my headers because we scratched them a little bit when installing them.

While I had everything torn down I repainted the valve covers gloss black.

Also took off the intake manifold to replace the oil check valves and it is amazing how clean the intake ports stay on these MPI engines.

While the intake manifold was out I overhauled the heat shielding. I got some heatshield products 1/8 inch thick HP sticky shield to replace the reflect-a-gold.

This is the front and bottom of the intake manifold before I finished off the edge with the special tape.

This is the rear and bottom of the intake manifold with the throttle body elbow off.

This time with the throttle body elbow on, everything taped up, and ready to go back on.

More recently I got some carbon fiber engine covers from a friend and the grommets came in today.

I have two more modifications left to do to this car for this year. One of them is to install bigger front brakes. I got R8 front brake calipers, JHM LW RS4 365 mm rotors, and everything else to go with it. Just trying to decide what color to get the calipers done in. I could do standard gloss black, bright silver, or a bright candy blue.

Did you clean up the inside of the TB elbow? Easy job to cut out some protrusions into the flow.

Blue will make a much larger impact to the many envious onlookers. Terrific work. These cars are incredibly hot heat protection always seems to be a good investment

Nice work, I vote blue as well.

I vote NO to blue, especially with black F14s. Go black man, you’ll never go back.

Why hide those calipers though. Jimmy are those the 6 pot version?

I would leave the calipers as is. It’s a little gay having the R8 sticker on there, but it’s authentic. Get an S4 sticker to slap over it.

Go with silver, it’ll nicely match up to your cars color and pop against black wheels you have on.

I don’t think I’ve seen it done before, but what are everybody’s thoughts on ceramic coating the bottom of IM against heat? Anybody done it? Maybe apply on top of ceramic coating a reflect-a-gold too…
