**JHM 3 Liter: In House 2003 B6-A4 3.0 Build**

Hello again, AudiRevolution.net. The purpose of this thread will be to chronicle the advancement of our in house 3 liter A4 from a 16 second car to a 13 second car, all motor. I’ll share with you our plans for this car which will show you what we’ve got coming out for everyone with a 3 liter excited to go a little faster.

This blue, 2003 B6-A4 3.0 V6 was delivered to us a few weeks ago. It’s got a lot of miles on it but we like the color and the price was right.

Our plans for the car will include the following parts, products, and modifications (all of which will be available for retail sale once we’ve tested them to our satisfaction):

JHM B6-A4 3.0 ECU Tune

  • A lot of you have already heard that we have an ECU tune available for the 3 Liter A4s. we’ve been really pleased with all of the feedback we’ve received from our early adopters and helpful beta-testers. You guys know who you are, thanks for your dedication. This ECU tune will dramically increase the fun-factor of your 3 Liter. We’ve changed hundreds of parameters within the ECU programming. The result of these changes include (but are not limited to) improved throttle response while maintaining a 1:1 pedal to throttle feel, increased power available throughout the powerband (“power under the curve”), improved fuel efficiency, a more powerful top end, and a dynamic tune that will allow you to safely make more power as your modifications increase. Additional bonuses in the tune will include a catalyst efficiency code write out for everyone going catless (early adopters, your updates are coming), Launch Assist for those properly equipped, and possibly an SAI delete provision.

JHM B6-A4 3.0 Lightweight Flywheel and Clutch Combo

  • As many of you know, the B5-S4 flywheel DOES NOT FIT on this vehicle. Some people have tried to make them work, along with B5-RS4 clutches, but all of those options are too expensive. Our goal is to produce a Lightweight Flywheel and Clutch kit that will be less expensive than the other kits out there IN ADDITION to dramatically improving performance of your car. We’re talking about significantly decreasing the rotational mass and upgrading you to a clutch disc that will last you all the way into you go supercharged. The material will still be fine for daily driving while providing you with more grab than most people will need.

JHM B6-A4 3.0 TCU Tune

  • For those of you 3 liter owners looking to get a little more out of your transmission, we’ll be selling a Transmission Control Unit Tune or a “Tip-Chip” that will help you put your power to the ground much better than your stock TCU does. Through weeks of testing on motorsport’s 3.0 TIP, we were able to write a file for these TCUs that alters the shift points, decreases the time between gear changes, and allows you to get from gear to gear faster. The car shifts harder and feels “snappier”. As you continue to add power to these cars, faster shifts are a must since slow, sloppy, sliding shifts put a lot of wear on your automatic transmission’s clutch packs. As a lot of you have probably read, the difference this TCU tune does for this car is amazing. I prefer a stick, but I really enjoyed testing out this software in motorsport’s car.

JHM B6-A4 3.0 Downpipes

  • Pretty self explanatory here. The HUMONGOUS cats on these cars - tucked up right against the exhaust manifold - are SUUPER restrictive and the biggest thing holding this car back. By themselves, these downpipes should help the cars performance some and give a nice enhancement to your exhaust note. Paired with our tune however, our 2.5 inch downpipes will give the 3 liter motor the room it needs to breathe, completely opening up the top end on this car’s V6.

JHM B6-A4 Downpipe to B6-S4 Cat-Back Adapters

  • We’re working on making an adapter kit that will allow you to bolt up ANY B6-S4 cat back system to your 3 Liter A4, allowing you to take advantage of a market that has a lot more products to offer for it’s vehicles.

JHM B6-A4 3.0 Lightweight Rotors

  • Just like we’ve done for other platforms, we’ll be coming out with stock sized, lightweight rotors that will make the car feel more nimble and make it get down the track a little bit quicker.

JHM B6-A4 3.0 Intake Manifold Spacers

  • We’ve had a lot of success with this modification on the B6/B7-S4 and B7-RS4. These phelonic spacers sit in between the head of the motor and the intake manifold, insulating the manifold from the high temperatures resulting from combustion allowing you to keep your power longer. Additionally, the increased length of the runner that the air travels in will allow for some small (but noticeable increases in torque).

JHM B6-A4 3.0 Air Intake Modifications

  • A few of the 3 liter enthusiasts that post here and on other forums have already found some ways to mod their intake systems for free. Building on these findings, we’re going to work on making this cars’ intake system the most efficient and performance focused it can be. Let’s call it “Building on the Zingo Mod”.

JHM B6-A4 3.0 Motor Mount Solution

  • Through our research with this car (and because of our dedication to this platform) we’ve found a solution for upgrading the motor mounts on the 3.0 V6 engine - yet another product on the 3 liter that is unique to this car.

JHM B6-A4 3.0 Shifter and Linkage Products

  • We’ve had these available before this movement started, but I figured it’d be good to remind everyone that we offer a “Trio” of products to help solidify your 3 Liter’s shifting: JHM Short throw shifter, JHM Weighted Linkage, JHM Delrin Shifter Stabilizer bushings. These products are available for both the 2002 - 2003 3 Liters with the 01E and the 2004 - 2005 cars with the 02X transmission.

OEM and Replacement Parts for your 3 Liter

  • FINALLY, we are your number one source for OEM and replacement maintenance parts for your 3 Liter V6. We’re working daily to add more and more parts to our site. However, there are parts that we haven’t added and you will need! When that happens, send us an email or give us a call and we’d be happy to get you what you need!

**Note: We’re also working on releasing a few more parts like a lightweight battery and/or relocation kit and a lightweight crank pulley but these modifications haven’t been developed as fully yet. We’ll keep you updated.

**Oh, another note. We do have definite plans to go beyond all motor on these cars if the market will allow us. Forced induction is a definite possibility. ;D

On to the results with our in house car!

When we received the car, we were very excited to get the tune we had developed on motorsport’s car on the shop car. Even though we needed to do a lot of baseline research on a stock car, we put the tune on the car. From a “butt dyno” or “feel” aspect the gains were very solid for 91 octane fuel and stock downpipes. I was very disappointed to have to take the tune off the car and drive it stock.

After having done a lot of road logging and data collection on the car, we took it out to the track to get more REAL WORLD data. (This was also my first time EVER lining up to a tree) The car performed about as expected but was really consistent. The first time down the track I ran a 16.2 at 75.8 miles per hour. The trap speed was low because I missed fourth gear. My 60 ft speed was 2.3 seconds. The half track light was broken at the first part of the night.

Before the next run we looked at some of the acceleration data from our logging and decided to try a different shifting strategy. The next time we ran a 16.0 at 85.9 miles per hour and I didn’t shift out of 3rd gear. Doing this, I just kissed the rev. limiter but I was already passed the light. My 60 ft on this run was 2.2 seconds.

I ended up running the car a few more times and my best time out of those ended up being the best of the night. I ran another 16.0 at 86.3 miles per hour with a 2.2 60 ft. The half track light was working on this run and I trapped 68.3 miles per hour at the 1/8th mile.

Foofie Kitten, I see you’ve got that Drag Times post up. Could you add these times up there for us? I didn’t have any modifications on the car, TOTALLY STOCK. It was about 85 degrees out if you need that stuff. I should have timeslips to post up shortly.

Next Steps:

Our next modification for this car will be to put on our Lightweight Flywheel and Clutch Combo. Like I said before, this will improve the responsiveness of the motor and free up a lot of load off the motor. Additionally, the better clutch disc should allow us to cut some awesome 60 ft times.

We’ve already upgraded the motor mounts on the car and should be able to report back soon about how they feel in the car after driving it for awhile. We’ll also take them off to try out different combinations and densities of other mounts in the car. For example, we’re going to put the stock mounts back in and see how they feel with a transmission mount, a rear differential mount and vice versa, etc… We’re dedicated to getting you guys the most information we can about this platform.

That’s all I’ve got for now. I’ll be sure to get more updates to you guys as I have them. Thanks again to AR.net for allowing us to post here and thanks again to all of you 3 liter enthusiasts who have pushed us so hard. We’re only able to do what we do because of you guys.

As always, should you have any questions, comments, or concerns email us at sales@jhmotorsports.com or v8@jhmotorsports.com (we really need to get him a new email address! ;))

Keaton,

I want to thank you for accepting our invite and this opportunity to post this on Audirevolution
I’m excited to see the 3.0 guys have a home and now a company that strongly supports them

Long live the 3.0 & jhm

The best news this week

Keaton, great news. Glad to see is moving along very nicely. Awesome car and color, can’t wait to see that blue streak get into the 13s

I’ll be contacting you next week about what we talked about.

HELL YEA! Props, that is the most informative post ever, thank you. Beutiful car!

Nice car Keaton, and that’s a fairly rare colour to see. Can’t remember the name but it is a pearl.

Cant wait to see all the advancements and getting in the 13’s

Again great work…I could not imagine a world without JHM

pretty sure its Denim Blue

I’m new to this site and I’m excited to be here and learn about making our 3L have more performance. And JHM is a great company and am excited to obtain their ecu and tcu tip-chip tune. BTW, what rear valence is that?

Thats a votex, you can get them from ecs for 200ish shipped

nice writeup

What’s unique about the motor mounts in our cars? I just replaced the OE ones with 034 track dens and they fit well and are a great upgrade.

Yes I was wondering this too, cuz I was planning on using the RS4 mounts.

Nice Keaton! First time down the track is rattling at first I know, but addictive.

Good to see things are moving well for the 3.0 game. Keep it up and great work.

Ill tell ya. Something about the B6 A4/S4 just look great. Im super excited to see how this plays out. With JHM now getting a solid start in the 3.0 where will the 3.0 be this time next year.

Great post keaton. Now get that flywheel ready for the S5

Oh what little do you know about this bad boy ^ hehehe

woot! I’m excited for the Tune other goodies for my 3.0!

I spoke to a few local guys in my audi chapter and the other chips giac apr ect have been a joke so it sounds like the JHM chip is the way to go. lots of the 3.0 guys are excited about it. I can’t wait to go for a ride in a local guys car to see the difference

bumping this up…any updates for the 3.0 project Keaton?

Great Idea. Keaton. Where are the catless DP’s when can we expect to see them? I know they are in production or pre production atleast.

Thanks for all the great feedback, guys. I appreciate the comments on the car color, look, etc… it’s a pretty clean setup for the miles it’s got and the interior is mint. The previous owner will have no idea what he was selling his car into. Also, I wish I could get on here more but the day to day stuff in the office keeps me away longer than I’d like. I’ll do what I can.

Rod - You got that right about the track: it was a little nerve racking, I thought I killed my 3-OHH on its very first time out. I’m pumped to go back though and see how much faster I can go with some of these goodies… for pure R and D purposes of course ;D

My S5(afe) Hyden - It’s coming! It’s coming!

LZ5L3.0 - Glad to hear it!

sakimano - I should have some pictures tomorrow of our clutch and flywheel setup.

Shawn hornet - Catless DPs are on their way. I don’t know what the difference between pre-production and production would be but I can tell you that we’re working on them and that we’re making sure the fitment is spot on for both manual and automatic cars! Thanks for the enthusiasm (and the patience)!
