JHM 3 Liter RESULTS THREAD

So, getting pushy here…When can we expect to be able to purchase these parts (Flywheel, Clutch, Tune, spacer), and is there an estimated cost yet?

I have the dreaded vibration that is possibly the flywheel that needs replaced, clutch is going, and I’m getting the CEL for bad cats, both sides. Its bad enough that I’m letting my Audi sit in the garage while I drive my mothers 93 Mercury Sable… >:(. And I suppose that if I am going to be throwing a couple grand into it, i might has well get the shifter as well, right? but I’m ready NOW, cash in hand!! I cant wait much longer, your going to force me to go somewhere else… :’(

Gret idea to open up the mouth of the exhaust manifolds. The mouth of the exhuat manifold on the 3.0 looks to also be part of the collector. Opening the mouth by a Quarter inch man that really is going to help the performance and tone.

I would have to think that is going to be a great addition in the free modifacation catigory. A large amount of power is made and lost.

After seeing how dodgy the bad manifold is are you guys going to be looking into long tube headers

Im sure they could sell you that stuff now, being that they have tested the parts and the tune. Contact them directly through Sales@jhmotorsports.com

They will get you hooked up.

i really agree with the other post flowtech made if can you get us some measurements on both sets of oem manifolds. i know i have the same big ones as you so it would be to help give a good idea on port size and colloctor size between the two and maybe tell if headers are a needed option

I have contacted them already, I am just being impatient, and I didn’t get a “for sure” answer on availability and price yet through email, but I’m sure they are busy with the holidays and such.

im thinking that at the end of keatons updates he will reveal the release dates for all this stuff

being lucky enough to have been part of the test crew im excited for this to be available

I think we took care of you yesterday, am I correct? It’s always a little tricky matching up forum names with email addresses but I’m pretty sure we helped you place an order. If I’m mistaken, PLEASE let us know and we’ll do everything we can to get you those parts you need while yourr car is down.

Additionally, I wanted to let you guys know that I updated my most recent post with pictures from the exhaust manifolds on the JHM 3 Liter. To make it easy, here they are again:

In just a few minutes - 20 to 30 minutes of dremeling - we fixed one of the weakest links on this exhaust system (the first being those huge catalytic converters). Believe it or not, the B6-B7 S4s have a similar design and aren’t the best for a high powered car but with the proper tuning they can still get the job done. Just 20 minutes of dremeling these openings and leaving yourself with a rolled edge really goes a LONG WAY. Opening up the diameter of the opening from 1.8 inches to about 2.2 inches can really increase the flow out of these outlets.

keaton if your measurements are correct that is a crazy jump in surface area.

From an exhaust and flow stand point this is a very big deal.

The collection surface area stock is 31.6"
Even if you only opened it up to say 2" you would be at 37.6" surface area
going to 2.2" is 44.23" surface area

using the calculation that there is at least 1" of depth that your opening up and then the mouth dia calculated.

just going from the opening from 1.8 to the 20 min mod of opening to the 2.2 your creating 34% more surface area.

Let me say that again. Doing what you just did in the free easy mod. You increased the surface area by 34%. That is going to really help wake the car up and its definitely going to make for a great argument for larger pipes if you ask me

Great stuff Keaton, that should definitely fix up the bad manifolds.

I see you updated your post with pics, bit when will we see the videos in the op :stuck_out_tongue:

Damn. 34% is a huge gain. The manifolds don’t look so bad now. good info

Awesome! Very impressive gains from such a simple mod. I have a lot of questions but I’m sure they will be answered soon so I’ll keep them to myself…

Here’s a thought. Everything on paper suggests initial 3.0 testing was a bit faster in the 1/4 mile than what we have all experienced ourselves (a couple tenths in the 1/4 mile). Could this be due to the fact that the tests were conducted on '02 cars with the better manifolds? If so, how much of a real world difference is there between the modified crappy manifolds and the better ones? (2.2" vs 2.5"?)

Oops, that was one of the questions I was keeping to myself :stuck_out_tongue:

I think most testing done on the 3.0 was on manual transmission and it wasn’t accurate. Chances are some of the publications just kinda phoned in the results where they really didn’t do testing they just repeated what they gathered else where.

The JHM in house cars are Manuals, however the cars we have heard from are tip cars, so it will be hard to see if there would be a difference and from memory Zingo went to the strip but on most occasions with issues and by the sounds of it he has the bad manifolds.

Maybe I can send over my good manifolds to JHM and see if they make any difference.

I believe my cats are killing my car right now. On top of that Ive had a few vacuum leaks which have been resolved. Now I know the numbers don’t tell the whole story with my testing at least. On a daily driven stand point, the car feels alive. Highway overtaking, rolling acceleration the car feels great. At the track, I get killed in my 60ft. 2.6s and shit aren’t going to cut it. Getting rid of these cats (my assumption, I have the bad manis too) is what is killing me off the line. Maybe throw in a lauch assist and I think I can do 2.0s.

My times are assumptions though, but that is def where my car is being held back. Having an auto doesn’t help but with those 3 things taken care of I believe she will be a whole other monster.

Sorry Keaton, just seen this message, yes, i was helped at that time. Thanks! clutch/flywheel are being installed as i type!

Hey Everyone -

Thanks again for all of your responses and for following our updates so closely. We really appreciate the support. I’ve got another update for you.

We already went to the track and gathered some real world, performance data showing how the ECU tune, downpipes, exhaust manifolds perform. While we were pleased with the results we got there, we weren’t quite ready to release the downpipes for sale until we completed some long term tests with them. We should have the final results from those tests soon which should allow us to release the downpipes for sale in February.

I CAN’T WAIT to get these downpipes on the car of EVERY excited 3 liter owner out there. The progression that my car has made from stock to where it is now has just been awesome. Our 2.5 inch downpipes have really been the key to it all! Early on, we knew that we were able to wake these cars up with a tune, but it wasn’t until we gutted the cats on motorsports916’s 3L that we knew we had a chance at making these cars move out.

A few weeks after the great results with mtorsports’ car, I was able to purchase a 3 L and one of the first things we did was remove the stock downpipes and start to fit up 2.5 inch ones. The result of these first run, prototype downpipes - even with a stock cat back - was like getting tuned all over again. Even when comparing it to motorsports916’s catless car, the jump was significant. The car felt stronger down low and kept pulling and pulling on the high end. At this point, I had two simultaneous desires: I wanted our calibrator to remove the RPM limit on our tune and I wanted to have our head technician perform a timing belt service. I knew I was going to wind this motor to the moon! And this car LOVES IT!

The next step was to examine the exhaust manifolds and see what all this fuss was about regarding the two different types of them we had heard about. See my last post for information about our 30 minute Dremel solution there.

As with any good exhaust system, the final aspect to be evaluated was the fitment and performance of the cat-back. We bolted up our 2.5 inch cat-back from the B6-S4 that we worked with Fast Intentions to develop. The results were amazing. There was a noticeable increase in performance over the stock exhaust as well as a huge change in the tone. Our 2.5 inch downpipes on a stock cat-back sounded mean but with a 2.5 inch cat-back with a properly placed x-pipe attached to them, it sounded awesome.

I can’t wait to get this stuff out to you guys. I’ll have another update for you SOON!

Thanks again!

Sweet!! Keep at it Keaton! Myself and many others are anxiously waiting to see those downpipes and results.

It’s like Christmas all over again ;D (except I have to pay for all my “presents”)

Im really glad to see they actually tested. What I like is were hearing about testing and not just watching a video clip of the ehdxaust revving and then trying to cash in.

NOt that I Don’t want a video cause I do. just saying I like the information first
