Jhm intake spacers! Edit: engine code

Hy all,
I’m wondering how good you can see them when installed?
I want to check if I have them already since I’m about to carbon clean my intake valves and I don’t want to buy double…

Thats smart as the spacers are a really really big help overall. And the carbon clean is always the time to install them.

Snap a picture of the intake manifold where it meets the head. Post it here. I’ll let you know if you have them if you are not already able to tell.

I’ve seen that I don’t have them…
So I just ordered everything from brush to extra gaskets and spacers…
I even went the extra mile by taking an order for a golden heat reflecting foil for the manifold as well…

After this I will install a jhm exhaust and ecu tune. For the transmission I will have it flushed or cleaned (haven’t decided yet) and tcu tuned…

Took it apart today…
Definitely a lot of carbon there about 2-3mm on the valves.
The metal plates in the inlet are very dirty as well!!
I’ll have a full day of cleaning tomorrow.

Don’t reinstall the port spacers you’ll get better cold starts

They are in the trash can already :wink:
Tomorrow I’ll check the flaps in the intake manifold and clean everything.
My only complaint was high fuel consumption…
I’m eager to find out the difference

My intake was good so I just reinstalled it…

Now after the clean I have an epc and blinking cel light.
So I will have to pass by my indy shop to check the codes since I can’t read them myself. I guess it’s a spark plug issue since I reinstalled the old ones because I didn’t have new ones available. (And I hope so since I don’t want to pull the engine :see_no_evil:)

Did you purge your cylinders after the carbon clean?

A few things to check.

Check the bolts on the intake to cylinder head connection
Check the coil packs for proper connection

And as you mentioned look into getting the codes read off. That will help point you in the correct direction

Yes I did…
So today I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes.
Now the epc code and blinking engine light has gone.
Now I have a check engine light and rough idle with reduced power so my guess is I’m running on 9 cilinders…
I’ll wait for the read out which cilinder so I can check if it’s just a matter of 10 new spark plugs or a new coil as well…

After all I don’t expect anything mayor since the car was running just fine before…

Could be a number of things I agree I don’t think you’re going to be seeing anything too major. Do you have a reduced rpm max

I don’t know, it doesn’t have the same low end grunt that’s sure…
I don’t Rev my car out when I’m not sure if everything is fine…
High rev’s and check engine light is a no go in my world :see_no_evil:

OK next episode.
It gave an engine management fault from computer 2…
Now we did a reset and sealed some connectors better and it runs good…
All 10 cilinders now and revs out smooth although a tad less Powerfull?? Or do I imagine this since I drove a 2018 rs6 for 100km’s Just the day before…

So now my indy guy adviced me to run for a few days (a petrol tank) and then recheck because engine light came back on after 15 or so km’s…

Now the next weird thing I think my car is gutting his own cats from the left bank :thinking:
While I was in the workshop my left exhaust began to blow pieces of insulation and after 2 handsfull 2 tiny pieces of what looked like Catalyst came out. After this it stopped and now it seems fine just a bit louder :flushed:

Codes always tell a good part of the stroy. It might be a good idea for you to get a code reader for your car .Vag com is one of the best.

As for the cats coming out that is a bad thing. While you see some of the material coming out the tail pipe there are possible other chunks that have not made their way to the pipes or worse if the cats are falling or breaking apart there is a chance that a chunk can break off and then get lodged blocking exhaust.

I always read that the cats are an engine out job :scream: but isn’t it possible to gut the cat from under the car when you have the exhaust off?

At the moment nothing is blocked 200% because the car runs free and sounds great…

Do the cheap eBay alternatives do their job as well?? Because it’s only with the covid 19 that I don’t have full time access to my local indy shop

just to be clear:
I did a carbon clean, 2 new HPFP’s and installed spacers 2 weeks ago this is when all this started…
I installed 10 new plugs yesterday and 2 new coil packs (one had a tiny drop of oil on it and cilinder 1 since it’s a pain to reach…)
10 new injectors august 2018 (20.000km/12,500 miles ago)

now i’m wondering if i should replace the PCV as well since my intake manifld had a few drops of oil at the intake side in retrospect…

Ok, next step till we get there.
new PCV is in place and tomorrow i’ll replace the gasket of one of the throttle bodies where it pulled a sidestream of air. (as proven with brake cleaner)

So the electrical faults listed well above no longer occur?

In IT, whenever we have a problem, we ask: “What changed?” In your case it was the carbon clean, so your problem is most likely related to that task.

Among other things, you have a few areas you can check:

  1. Why is your car now destroying a cat? The only reasons I know of are a slow deterioration of the cat material, or FOD running through the engine and taking out the cat. I assume this symptom is brand new, but I would not ignore it. You are correct, cats are engine out procedure.

  2. Vac leak of some kind - new engines are extremely sensitive to any vac issues. When you do a clean you disconnect all sorts of vac lines. A smoke test will help you locate any potential issues, but it sounds like you found one already.

  3. Electrical/sensor - like with vacuum, newer engines are also very dependent on good electrics, including voltage and sensor input. The fact that you have so many faults (I did n’t go back and see if the same cylinders were reporting each time - you should do that) would lead me to believe your problem is higher up the food chain rather than a specific sensor or component. (Did you change sparks when you did the work?)

  4. Fuel - is fuel being delivered correctly to the cylinders (I would put this way down on the list) but since so many cylinders are involved on both banks, I am not sure this is a likely candidate.

Finally, though I have not done it with the C6 S6, you can read values with VCDS that might give you clues as to the problem. There are only 3 things required for any engine to run: Fuel, fire and air. Your problem is with one of them, obviously that is an oversimplification.

You need more data, but the air leak tact is a good one to follow.
