Lets talk about mufflers.

please address the facts

  1. what were your times, and what track did you go to. Date too if you know it. What octane did you run. What RPMs did you launch at. Tell us everything you remember about it.
  2. what do you think of my evaluation of JHM vs. Ben…still think ‘ego’ is the only thing driving someone’s decision to choose JHM over Ben?

This is about all options related to the V8 4.2 wether it be an S4, RS4, A6, A8, R8

Speaking of mufflers (not a full catback system), I currently have Tubi Rumore axle back mufflers connected to the stock exhaust. I have zero hard facts regarding flow rates etc but if I had to guess they are less restrictive than OEM. They sound great and I didn’t expect a performance bump when purchasing them. I purchased them new but from a private seller for what I think was a great deal and I’m very confident that should i choose to sell them used, I’d get my money back and then some.

I also have the full JHM system in my garage. By selling these cans alone I could probably recoup a good percentage of the cost of the JHM system.

Lots of people love the Tubi and Capristo, and will pay dearly for them. Buying them at a discount is a good move…it’s like you’re renting them and being paid to do so (if you can sell them for more than you paid).

How about the 3-inchers: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/483589-Excelerate-Performance-Builds-a-Custom-3-quot-Exhaust-for-the-RS4?p=7567850#post7567850

So anyone have an idea of what mufflers the remaining companies use?

who is remaining? It’s less interesting once you talk about the good ones (Fast Intentions, JHM, MTM)

what does MTM RS4 use?

I thought most of the euro companies like mtm, capristo, etc designed their own mufflers in house? I think even AWE’s are made in house, not positive by any means though.

millltek too^^^

Humm intetresting. So basically they have a sort of exclusivity for their own mufflers? Could you buy capristo , MTM, miltek ect… mufflers on their own or would you need to buy the entire line if you wanted just the cans?

I remember the milltek cans being quoted at $800 or something a set… ie not worth it

Well remember this is about just the cans and not the full line. More to compare price / sound / performance for the actual muffler part.

Why are you humming?

As for buying the mufflers, you can from the looks of it. Sometimes sold/referred to as an axle back. NY07RS4 has an axle back from Tubi on his car.

yes but your OP was about what mufflers were used by the main exhaust options for the 4.2, and since almost nobody buys mufflers alone (since most of the stock catback is shit, thus they replace it all)…and since talking about inferior catbacks is boring, I thought I’d ask what was left to discuss since nobody really cares once you get past the good catbacks lol.

well whats left is sound i guess.

One could be interested in hacking off say sebring mufflers on the FI line to put MTM cans or something.

And i just like to humm… humm?

hahaha hummmm

to be honest, I think you’d be nuts to do that. Sebring are great quality, great sound, great flow (straight through perforated core). MTM are probably going to charge you $2500 for their mufflers (if they’d even sell them).

If I were making an RS4 exhaust, I’d make it 2.75", gentle x-pipe, sebring mufflers and oval tips to keep the RS4 look. Of course that has already been done by JHM and that’s why I know it’s succesful, so ethically I’d probably go back to the drawing board and rethink that.

Making an exhaust with that exact layout, which is basically a straight up copy of JHM, is tantamount to ‘reverse engineering’ a tune. Oh they did that? OK, I’ll do that. I’d put that ebwerks exhaust in the SSAC category of copycats. Maybe not a perfect replica…just different enough to not earn you a lawsuit…but certainly close enough that it’s not fooling anyone (weill…anyone that doesn’t post on quattroworld).

Fixed that for ya.

AWE are in house? I have an idea. I’m going to email all of these companies

funny how smegma just vanished when directly asked to address the facts.

This statement is simply for accuracy. I have his endlinks and so far so good. The OEM endlinks broke a month after upgrading to the 29mm Hotchkis RSB whereas these endlinks have lasted for 4 months. RSB is on the more aggressive setting. I don’t know if the OEM endlinks were simply worn down over time (they were 6 years old) but I can’t complain about BenSTI’s endlinks. So far they’re holding up.

That is all.

what’s accurate?
