Low Mileage Audi S6 2007 Restoration Project

Hi all,

I recently bought this car at 114k miles and it definitely isn’t perfect. I want to restore this car because I’m a huge fan of restoration projects. I want to see this car shine again. Obviously I know this will be a big money investment so parts and links

The problems I have so far that I know of:

The Mechanical

Shifter Replacement needed, shifter doesn’t go into Sport mode, has issues recognizing if when it’s in park. I fortunately have the whole assembly and I’m waiting to replace it.

Front and Back Struts are blown. I would appreciate a link to good replacements that give either oem performance or better.

Pretty sure I have a blown cat on the driver’s side but this will be one of the last things I replace because of how expensive it is and how rare it is. I get the code p3221 from the downstream O2 sensor. I will appreciate any advice on how to get that pesky CEL off my dash !! P.S. if anyone has done the fouler trick let me know if it worked!

Another thing I see is that the car has an issue where the parking brake has a beep come up that says that there has been a parking brake malfunction. This only happens when the car is travel over 10mph so I feel like it’s a fuse or relay somewhere.

And lastly the car has an intermittent brake fault warning even though brakes work very well. It happens very randomly and sometimes pops up in the middle of driving. Any advice or pointers would be helpful.

Cosmetic

This poor car also in an accident where the driver had a flat on the highway and hit the median barrier. It scraped the side of the car and although it looks rough, I can tell it didn’t hit the frame. It luckily only scraped the wheels and some of the fender/side skirts. I would appreciate any body techs here that can help me out and get the scratches looking better.

I write this to sort of have a roadmap of getting this car back to its former glory.

Hopefully this thread can also serve as a good reference for more up to date parts/links for others who may encounter these issues as well.

I will be adding photos on a separate post

Here is the scratch

Looks like your going to have to pull the engine for that shifter regardless. That being the case I would address everything while its out. The most notorious leak on that car is where the timing covers in the back that has a coolant pipe running through the middle. I guess rear main seal as well. I’ve always done the timing since I went through effort of it all being out. It depends how in depth you want to go haha

I am currently pulling the engine to change the trans. I dont have any pics since its super redundant to me

As for the cat get the jhm tune for the car

Here’s a manual for the car

DO NOT DO the Foller “trick” if you have a bad cat you’re about to have a bad motor shortly there after if you don’t address it. Once the cats fail they fall into the next cat… then clog that. Then cause exhaust pressure build up and start to damage the motor.

Sprawwl has pulled more 5.2 motors out then most people own cars. So he’ll tell you straight. While I’ve pulled more then most. I’ll tell you it’s not super hard but for what you have it’s worth it.

Thank you for the tips! As for the jhm tune, I am definitely considering it but how does it help a failing cat? Would it get rid of the CEL?

For me I gutted and no CEL id also get the transmission tune. The ecu and trans tune is a game changer

I assume gutting it would be a engine out situation too, where do y’all get your parts? I couldn’t find a power steering pump anywhere

So you can flash a file that will remove the CEL but it won’t help “save” the cat. They have several options that help the car run better. They’re still pretty involved in the 5.2. So they’ll be happy to help. Just don’t email them and be like… hey I need you to help me break a federal law and help me turn off a CEL for the modifications I did that are technically against the law. They’ll help you just need to be smart about it if you’re asking questions about cats and exhaust

Most of the things are a engine out depending how deep you go but for changing the o2 sensors and the starter are pretty much engine out and header off for the starter. Once the engine is out its pretty easy to get to everything and id honestly address everything at that point.

As for used parts that are from a junkyard I use this
https://www.car-part.com

For new parts I use between fcp euro, ecs tuning, rockauto, and the audi dealer (if i have no choice)

Also thats currently my s6 motor out below

I dont know if its bad that I know where every bolt and hose goes when I drop the engine. I no longer sort and only time I use the manual is to double check torque specs lol

You can also use this for reference

For exhaust gaskets get 2 of each one that I circled on rockauto

And 2 gaskets of this from fcpeuro https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-vw-catalytic-converter-gasket-genuine-audi-vw-4e0253115a

For me I get anything elring wise if I can find it. Im sure you can find it all on fcp euro but generally rockauto is cheaper. Im pretty sure you’ll end up ordering from both for certain things. The o2 sensors and starter you definitely get from rockauto unless you find it cheaper elsewhere
