No one is running 9’s on a stock block. But then again I don’t know of many cars that can run 9’s on a stock block.
It sounds nearly identical to the direct injected version of the ttrs. If you’ve heard a ttrs with even just a downpipe you know how mean this engine sounds. It’s incredible.
When I spoke to the dealer he said the ttrs I drove was just a sport oem exhaust and an apr downpipe. Which really surprised me because it sounded straight piped. Just crazy good. I have yet to find a YouTube video that does the exhaust note justice
9 seconds on a stock block is pretty impressive. I saw this video a couple weeks ago of a Subaru doing a 9 second pass on a stock block and stock transmission.
I feel like 9’s is a bit over the top, but 10’s can be done in a more or less street trim.
I originally started to look at subaru STI’s for turbo selection. Since they have the same displacement I figured spool characteristics would be similar, though I can’t speak to the efficiency of each motor in comparison.
Running 10’s up here in Denver is tough, the DA is never on your side, The 5 times I went last year the DA never dropped below 7500. And then I came across this guy
Running 10.2 @ 135MPH, which is pretty impressive in general, but even more so up here at altitude. The car looks pretty streetish except for the drag radials and possibly some weight reduction, he didn’t say anything about that but I would be suprised if he didn’t.
Anyway the guy is running a GTX3582r. Which is a beefy turbo flowing around 75lbs/min.
These guys are Perrin Performance had some some research on the 3582 and the gtx3076, which flows around 10lbs/min less.
So it spools about 500 rpm slower for the same level of boost, which gets you 10lbs/min more so roughly 100hp.
Seemed like a good deal so I definitely wanted to be in the 75-80 range for my turbo selection, but the more i thought about it, the more a 10 second car just seemed like a bit much. now I am leaning toward using the EFR 7163 which is a 60lb/min turbo but it is a very new technology turbo, the rotating assembly is about 1/3 lighter than the garretts so it spools faster and harder, the turbine wheel is more efficient at low speeds too, there are a ton of little things that make it a great turbo. And I’ve been giving it much more thought to go with this turbo, while its smaller it will make a great turbo for daily driving.
Yeah I was pretty excited buy some parts from him and expedite my build, I mean i literally ordered the parts I gave him the money and waited months, and he wasn’t willing to ship out anything or build anything. Which is super weird. If someone is flashing a couple grand in my face I get a bit more motivated to work.
I don’t care how much power it makes, I’m skeptical that a car with a full interior, and street tires/wheels is going 10.anything with a 5 cylinder engine. Would be interesting to be proven wrong.
street trim as I describe it would be how you drive on the street
you don’t drive on drag slicks, so that’s not street trim
Maybe, do you mean take a DSG transmission from a golf and try to install it onto the TTRS engine? I’m sure its possible, but I wanted to go longitudinal.
Pretty sure the TTRS runs 10’s with a stage 3 from APR. Revo/Loba runs pretty low 11’s
These engines make phenominal power, its kind of crazy beacuse my 4 cyl could never even dream of being an 11 second engine, but add one cylinder and it changes everything entirely.
What about the RS7? When more mods are released that’s easily going to be a 9 second street trim car. Isn’t it already down to 10.1 with tune and exhaust? Or does it have something else done to it?
The rs7 is nuts. I’m assuming that at some point someone is going to figure out how to cram a bigger set of turbos in there, and it will be even more surprising than it already is. I feel like the whole STK thing didn’t really work out for the 2.7 but I’m sure someone will eventually try it on the rs7.
Mec thanks again for the updates on the build. The 5 cylinder motor is legendary and still to this day is one of the best motors audi has ever built. I thunk it’s even better then the Vr6 motor. Really enjoy the build and the right attitude in building the car. Very bold move and very excited to see more. Of your looking for a turbo try Franken turbo lol. I hear he can make great compressor maps
I’m in communication with Doug@Frankenturbo now, he is making me some custom turbos that spool like a gtx3582 but flow 80% more. Or at least thats how the compressor maps look
Close enough! I don’t mind running race fuel 5 days out of the year as long as the car is 85-90% as fast on a street tune.
So apparently MEC is not finishing the project and selling his car on AZ. sucks because i really wanted to see this done, especially because he seemed like the the type of person who knew what he was doing and would tell the truth.
Yeah it’s a long story. But short version is I got bored.
About a year ago I was offered a sizable sum for my built engine and so I sold it, well sold pretty much the entire engine bay, thought I can totally stuff a 2.5 in there and turbo it.
Well sold the 2.0t, bought a 2.5, and then I started a job that had me clenched by the nuts. I was making very little income, much less then when I was running my landscaping business, and I was unable to afford to do an engine swap, but more than that it was also a full time commitment, often taking up to 15 or 16 hours in a day, I had no time. So the car sat for a year. And for a year I went through a dark period where I was very unhappy with my financial situation and just with life, a job like that doesn’t allow for much freedom. Well I quit that job mid December this year and I decided to turn my life around.
Sure enough, I got a job offer that paid better and required much less commitment. So I started thinking maybe now with the new salary I can afford to fix the car, but it’s just not a passion of mine anymore. It’s a 10 year old entry level sedan, it struggles to compete with anything by today’s standards. So I decided to list it for cheap no engine and it looks like it is gonna sell quick.
I’m going to be driving my jap suv for a bit until I can find a car I really like but I’ve been very taken by the 996t, they are a very good deal for the car you get.
Either that or ttrs perhaps, depending on how they retain their value, I can’t justify spending 50k on a ttrs, it’s more like s 30k car to me.
The cool thing is that I’ve gotten a lot of interest in selling the car and three people actually said they would buy it to continue the swap. So maybe someone else will get it done, for now I’m just interested in starting a new chapter in my life.
