Mec's Intro Thread

Im glad im not only one that thinks those dws suck. Had to warranty them twice a few years ago. After third set i said f it and sold the wheel/tire combo. Shit tires imo. But, i do like the dw. Good luck with them.

Haven’t posted here in a while, but I thought I would update this thread.

Around December I decided I wanted to do an engine swap, So I sold my entire engine bay to an enthusiast up in Canada. And I bought myself a new engine.

Drove a stage 2 ttrs and fell in love with the exhaust note and with the performance. It was absolutely the fastest stage 2 car I had been in.

So I decided to make my Poor Man’s TTRS.

And it almost fit perfectly, but looks like I will have to work the radiator support a bit maybe relocate the fans to the outside for it to fit.

Unfortunately since this is a transverse engine it has no places for longitudinal mounts, it was right around here that I decided to drop off the car at a fabricator.

I sold my business back in November and started a new job in December that has me working 70 hour weeks so I haven’t had much time to work on it, but the wiring is all sorted and ready for a trial installation, the ECU is ready to go, just need to get the engine fully planted, and figure out cooling connection and the fans.

The guy I took the car to has done some amazing fabrication over the years, Apikol usually outsources their welding to this guy, and he has done lots of jobs for local shops, and he has actually been working on one of the classic quattros with a 5 cyl engine in it.

Here is a pic of the AWIC manifold he made for it.

Here’s an airbox he made for it too

The guy does great work and he is super friendly and nice so I am looking forward to working with him.

That’s lookin awesome. Hard work long road ahead but your really putting some good parts together. Please keep us posted.

Great to see you back and posting very much looking forward to more updates

that’s a 2.5T RS engine? That’s amazing. First cool engine swap I’ve seen in about 8 years on Audi forums.

how are you going to deal with the transmission and everything?

I think I know of who you’re working with for fabrication from my own research on my old c4 s4. Awesome stuff!

What turbo are you going to be upgrading to. Sure you wont be leaving it stock?

he said he will be leaving it stock turbo for now I think. Tune, exhaust it will be pretty beastly.

Must have missed that. Very interested to see how this turns out. Cool project!

This is a VW 07K engine, 2.5L NA. He will be adding a turbo to it though. These engines are surprisingly good for making power. There are several VW guys into the 9s with this engine.

Ahhh, thanks Jake.

Ahhh, thanks Jake.

His name is Teague and he owns Two Create, I’m sure you have heard of him at some point if you have looked into fabrication, he is good people.

I’m undecided on the turbo. When I started the project I wanted to slap the biggest turbo on it, now I am thinking a 60lb/min turbo would be best, I don’t need more than like 500whp, so I would prefer the early spool.

So I have been looking at the efr 7163 and if I want to go a bit bigger, the GTX3576.

Yep! This engine is possessed by the future spirit of John force! Some guy over on the vortex trapped like 172MPH and into the 8s with one of these, but the car was full out drag setup.

its not the RS engine. The RS engine has port injection, and costs a million dollars. Port injection in my experience with the a4 has been a headache, port will be much simpler, and these engines are incredibly cheap. I picked that one up for $450. And people have been saying they can do 450whp on them stock block, so I will probably not even try to build it until I decide to get aggressive. I’m sure a good tuner could get good power out of this engine without needing rods.

So its actually pretty cool, the transmission bolts up. like 5 of the holes on the tranny bolt up, 3 of them don’t because the oil pan has a different design on the VW but I need to get a new oil pan anyway to clear the subframe. Other than that the engine has a rather large vaccuum pump in the rear that slightly hits the transmission bellhousing, so I just notched that section, and Teague will be welding in a new section around it just so nothing falls in the bellhousing.

RS is direct injection ;D

doesn’t the A4 too? Mec is working too hard.

Yeah the a4 is port. Looking forward to a short day today, only 14 hours

hahaha thanks Jake, what would I do without ya?

lol Yeah I meant direct injection. lol I want to avoid direct injection. Its a shame because Direct injection is such a neat implementation of fueling, but port has its history and its worked well for performance, So I will stick with that.

A4 is direct injection too 8)

This thing is gonna be sick. Nice work man!

Def looking forward to this build. I’ve been reading up on the differences between the N/A 2.5 and the RS motor. In a few years i want to buy a salvaged flooded base TT and make a stripped out track car. seeing how the N/A is so much cheaper I’ve been interested in going that route instead.

Hank at Iroz Motorsports seems to be pretty knowledgeable in that area. He seems to post a lot on fourtitude and build quite a few of those motors. Not sure if your familiar with him or not.

I’m not his biggest fan. I’m not sure why but the guy really doesn’t like me. I ordered a couple of parts for my swap from him, he just kept me waiting for like 2 months, then never delivered then admitted he wasn’t gonna have them anytime in the near future, yet for like 3 or 4 months this guy wouldn’t give me a refund. Now when I email him he just don’t respond. Super strange guy. Maybe I pissed in his cereal at some point.

The NA version is the way to go though, you’ll never have fueling limitations, and though these engines are damn near bulletproof if you should bend a rod or do any damage to the engine you can just replace it for $400. That’s pretty insane when you think about it. I think most go kart engines cost more than that.

If you show me one in the 9s on that engine (i.e. not a built version of that engine…aka not that engine) I will be very impressed.

pretty neat. You may be on to something for i4 guys who want a change.

Anyone got any vids of one of these, modified, and accelerating so we can hear it? Does it sound anything like the RS3 engine?
