MIL on knock sensor

Hi guys; I’ve been getting intermittent codes about knock sensors ever since I installed my REVO tune. I talked many times with Gary and there is a “revision” coming out for the software.

I’ve checked with other REVO users and they are not getting it.

But Yesterday I got a MIL (Below). Would this mean that the knock sensor is already shot? I don’t want to go to the Dealer because you know I’ll get my car flagged… I was thinking of getting the Bentley’s Manual and If I can get a part number and even figure out where the godamn sensors ARE placed in the engine than just go ahead and put new ones and see what happens.

I need some advice

Thank you

tribe- where do you live?

edit… nevermind … saw u are in virginia.

Have you logged ur car via vag com? not for codes but for data. If not-- I would like to see some timing logs. I can go over what you need to log if you want.

How many times has this code come up?

I haven’t seen that code with the Revo car I log… have seen another code though.
(Long Term Fuel Trim mult.,Bank1/2 System too Rich)

I am sure you know the whole speculation with Revo that we are having…
mainly the ? adjustment to the knock detection sensors, so they are not as aggressive at fighting knock.

As a result, more timing advance, and more power - especially in cold weather, at an increased risk of knock, that could be harmful to the engine (how much so remains to be seen).

Further speculation is that as the weather gets hotter, the REVO (and likely GIAC) will suffer worse due to the way they make power when it’s cold with timing changes.

Hey Tsivas,

I did some logging and it’s in Ilspazzaneve’s thread at AZ but I don’t know if timing is there… I’m a total noob at logging.

I’m fully aware of the speculation about Revo tweaking knock sensitivity. I believe they might be doing it and also GIAC although they’ve managed to stay out of the war. I’ve read a post by silentbob where he says that Giac is most likely doing it…

The thing that makes me doubt that my problem is “only” related to the Tune is that no other Guys tuned with Revo seem to have this problem… Although there are not many 2012’s tuned yet.

I’ve been getting the knock sensor’s codes randomly. It doesn’t seem to be related to mashing on the pedal because I checked for codes after my 5 runs at MIR and didn’t have any… But yesterday was the first time I got a MIL. I’ll check later if it comes back

I got some instructions on how to log knock sensor’s electrical signals so “the man” can analyze them but I still didn’t get around to log that.

Gary @ REVO said there was a revision of the tune coming so maybe they are aware that something’s going wrong.

Question: Where the fuck are the knock sensors located? Are they accessible?

Thanks

oh snap

lol… i got that email too. ;D

(special log for you to do for our German
friend who can read relevant knock voltages. Log “N” which is RPM
block 408, and the knock voltages themselves I believe 413 to 418, and
Mass airflow. Do a third gear pull from down low, but right before
you run clear the faults (this apparently will clear any knock
adaptation).

as far as your logs… saw yours on AZ. you are doing fine with logging. I would just do several pulls (3 to 5 consecutive ones). More the better.

Just do a third gear pull from 2000 rpms to redline… if DSG… careful not to hit kickdown initially.

Let car coast down… and do three to five pulls this way. Want to see what happens with heat buildup etc.

reallly?

Hahaha

Hey Saki he got the codes too? I didn’t even know he had REVO. It would be interesting to get in touch with him. His problem seems worse; his car already turned green!!!

On a side note; Does the MIL go ON after so many times that the same fault is detected? Just thinking

you can pm him but i’m not sure he’s at liberty to say much…wasn’t he the guy who got a free tune so they could use his car to promote it?

First Revo tune was your friend Auditude

I think you meant to say Auditude’s dad

Auditude has a 4cyl B8 A4

Auditude’s dad has a B8 S4

;D

MIL comes on if you have the fault code on two consecutive driving cycles

Do the pulls like I described it to Ilspazzaneve. Also one in stock mode. It’s pretty easy to identify what’s been done ;D

tribe-- definitely try and do what silentbob suggested.

we can finally see what the hell is going on. Because your timing runs on AZ also have ZERO timing pull for the most part. this is not normal. can’t be. Auditude’s was same way. Maybe this knock detection theory we have was only done with 93 file because the 91 file that is posted definitely has some timing pull. Are these juiced up tunes on 93? Are they basically 100 files on pump? Maybe Silentbob can shed some light on the situation on this for us. Without the usual political nonsense/interference and bickering that goes on over at AZ between tuners.

Welcome to the board! Getting more and more knowledgeable people over here… F*** AZ and their money hungry management!

lol primetime…tell us how you really feel.

The latest AZ scam has been burying the TD1 story in the B8 S4 section. Funny as hell to watch them keep members in the dark on this in order to protect APR/GIAC/REVO. Once that ‘Audi voided my warranty because of my APR tune’ thread was started, you could see Anthony’s money grubbing mind scrambling to come up with a plan.

1st line of defense - add to OP’s thread title to make him look nuts and turn everyone against him
2nd line of defense - lock thread (it has already floated down now that it can’t be updated, and is on page 3…in other words willl never be seen again
3rd line of defense - lock and delete the OP’s second thread asking what the fuck is going on with his other thread/thread title.

It’s really quite sad. Anthony purports himself as an ‘enthusiast’. I guess because he bought a hideous old fucking 2.2 turbo’d S6 from the 90s that makes him ‘cool’. It’s probably bone fucking stock under the hood…and under the hood is the only redeeming part of that thing.

Anyway, he’s no enthusiast. He’s a business person, and his former ‘buddies’ who made the formerly small forum an interesting audi forum that wasn’t KAWF…(about all it had going for it back in the day) are now 60,000+ members…and he clearly cares nothing about the integrity of information on the site. Just that the sponsors are protected and pay up.

I’m always in when it comes to tuning BS ;D

To give some background:
Knock intensity is categorized by the pressure peaks the pressure oscillations produce during knock (all measured with cylinder pressure sensors). Depending on the operating point engine component development defines what pressure peaks can damage the engine.
Knock detection is then calibrated so that >90% of the defined pressure peaks are recognized taking into account the variations in serial production.
Based on the blurry map that has been posted on AZ the base noise of the engine is modified to squeeze out more ignition. The consequence is that pressure peaks that were already defined as “dangerous” are masked and only really heavy knock is recognized.
At best modifications like this are hard on the internals……………………
What pisses me off most is the fact that it’s all denied although it’s pretty obvious. ::slight_smile:
If it’s true that these modifications are also in stock mode you better not get really bad fuel in your tank.

yeah, I haven’t heard anyone complaining of stock ECU B8 S4s knocking. Has anyone?

Thanks for the post not-so-silent-bob. Good to have you aboard.

Nice to see you here Silentbob!

Ok guys here is some logging of following blocks: MAF - N - all 6 knock sensors voltage . REVO 93 file on 93 gas

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmUYNj7KWOPOdExGa0RLaFdxVUNRUl9ONGRrYklQZWc#gid=0

It’s long as shit but I couldn’t save as CSV file…It saved as TXT and was only 1KB. Finally I found this one on the computer. I hope it works out. Lemme know

EDIT: Now I get it. It’s long but it has a bunch of runs separated by time. not bad. I tried my best to do 3rd gear pulls (DSG) from about 1k to about 4K

EDIT 2: Now it should be UP. I forgot to “share” the spreadsheet

that’s a CSV file…no problem. You can just open it in Excel and save it as an XLS or whatever.
