Mr.Wrong's B6 S4 Build - Project Atlas

This is kind of neat. Mr wrong maybe copy thus into a new thread in the tech section. This is something really cool. It would be great to be able to expand on this.

And done^. I always like to read up into the details of how my cars are build from the factory. What other options out there, which I’d like to have or which could’ve been pre wired in for future installation. Right now in my spare time, I’m sorting out info on front and rear PDC and rear seat heating.

This is really cool. Good add. It would be cool to know more. There are those of us that all love the little details like this and being able to decode the car is always cool.

Well after quite a few miles and a little over four and half fun&reliable years together, had to say good bye to my first four ringed V8. It’s been quite a journey to say the least. The car performed flawlessly and never let me down or left me stranded. Here’s a quick picture timeline.

After it’s first major detail, all nice and clean.

BTW those are 245/40 tires, nice and meaty.

Wow man, very clean car!

Thanks! Yeah ten years later and it literally looks like it just rolled off a factory conveyer in Ingolstadt. Not to mention mechanically it’s in a tip top shape as well. New owner was extremely happy lol

On a side note, out of all the inquiries I got for the car, only 1% asked regarding timing service and by the type of questions I don’t think they even knew what they were asking themselves. The rest I believe weren’t even aware of what to look for in these cars.

Wow that’s crazy about the people not knowing what to ask. Still you had a great car and just as great care shows. These cars still look great. Is the new owner on here or what was the age category of the person who bought it if I may ask.

I had quite a few inquiries, most of them were in low 20s age group and below. Had a couple of deals that fell through because a buyer was not being approved for a loan due to a poor credit. A lot wanted a trade for their Civic, 3-Series, TL, etc… or hold it for them till they could sell theirs, yeah right ::slight_smile: I doubt the new owner will be signing up to any forums. It was an elder gentleman(mid 60s), kind of old school you could tell. I know it went to a good home and will be serviced regularly at his local Audi dealer. I’m actually really glad it went to him and not some young blood who will abuse the crap out of it and when the maintenance bill racks up, he will cry how expensive it is and unreliable blah blah blah then dumps it on someone with a slew of issues.

that sounds right. We assume the forum is a reflection of the population. Clearly it’s not lol.

nobody mods their car
nobody knows what a timing chain even is
nobody knows what WHP means

It’s funny.

^Yup. The percentage of population that actually is aware of timing system issues is quite small. Amount of people signed up or visit forums out of entire pool of owners is small by itself. Now out of those who are forum members, we usually see those who have an issue posting. The percentage of happy owners posting regarding their positive ownership is tiny. Most posts are problematic ones and in no way represent real life pool. Same thing with motor failure rate, quite small. Ironic how some project forum experiences onto real life.

Now back to your regular scheduled programming - Project Atlas.

We’re going to rewind here a little bit and go back in time. I’ve never been a fan of all leather seats, always preferred cloth or alcantara. During summers it gets scorching hot so you burn your glutes and hamstrings - not a pleasant thing especially if you’re wearing shorts and just finished leg workout. On the other hand, during winters it’s so cold once you plant yourself - it really wakes you up on an early cold winter morning and sets quite a mood for the rest of the day. So you know what’s coming next right. Seat swap, which is quite straight forward. Easy job or so it seemed.

Once I pulled the black napa leather seats out of Atlas, I realized what kind of condition the rest of the interior was :frowning: Quick wash would not cut it. Spilled coffee, candy, gum, dirt, all kinds of nasty gushi stuff that dried and stained the carpets under and in between the seats. Light smoke odor from POs didn’t help either. Next logical step would be to clean the hell out of it right, wrong not for me. It was a complete interior swap for an immaculately mint one from my black S4. Complete interior carpet including all of the trunk lining/panels, center console, seats, door cards, headliner and all associated pieces with it. This way I could have one car back up running in no time and the other one will be waiting for the thoroughly cleaned interior to be installed. Mind you I’ve never done anything of this sort prior to this, but no task is too big and off I went. The seat swap actually worked perfect since buyer of the Brilliant Black S4 preferred all leather seats to alcantara ones. So you could say it worked out perfect since I offered to do seat swap at no charge. He got what he wanted all leather seats and freshly thoroughly detailed complete interior and I got what I wanted - silver alcantara seats and my interior, which believe it or not still smells like a new car.

I have tons of pictures from this swap and was planning to put together a DIY on how to remove interior once the time permitted to write up everything. However, I have lost a memory card and pretty pissed about it as it was pretty comprehensive.

Going to be updating this thing pretty regularly or at least I’ll try

That’s on my list of things to do, so I’d love to see some pics.

You suck. That would have been very useful for me right now lol.

Honestly gentlemen, it’s not bad at all. Just take your time and don’t get frustrated and start yanking things with force just because something is not going the way it should. That’s probably the best advice I could give. For me the biggest pita was removing and reinstalling headliner… I’m cleaning garage one day at a time from all the spare parts I have, so I might stumble upon it. I honestly don’t believe I lost it for good, it’s just got lost in all my junk or at least I have a feeling.

Eddie when are you planning to actually start retrofit?

Im only doing the seats. SO headliner im ok with lol. Although, i have thought about doing alcantara headliner and doors if i find a good price and have everything else done.

I was thinking about trying to do it this weekend or next. (maybe even during the week). Why you gonna be in NYC soon?

No not going to be in NYC, but trying to organize garage by clearing out parts useless to me and hoping to stumble upon that memory card with all the pix.

Decided to get baseline #s before real fun begins…

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161204/e61d08eac33a49979be2cd176bb2e801.jpg

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161204/16ee733841988acbf0d68b00c5340880.png

All runs done in 4th gear.

So seems like we’ve got a healthy looking awhp #s for a stock S4. However, I’m not so sure about torque #s, aren’t they high a bit?

That is about 25wtq over what about 90% of all S4s make and since the hp reads about right for all the dyno S4 numbers you would see I would say something is off on the dyno TQ. It might be part of how the dyno reads tq. As you have read 100x this is one part of why more and more guys dont like dynos. Still good numbers for stock given the averages we usually see.

It will be something to look at as you add mods. If the TQ keeps going up at the same rate and keeps the same gap over hp then that would just be how that dyno works.

I agree, if delta proportionally is there then it might be just how it reads awtq. Sadly that’s still going to show an inflated number. 1/4 mile would be ideal together with track time and dyno on a side. Unfortunately, life throws you curve balls and in this case I’m affraid I have to rely on dyno to see advancement in output. I barely drove the car since I bought it, forget about modding lol So this will have to do for now.

Bytheway, thanks for your insight regarding injectors in the other thread. I’ll probably wait till 100k mile mark before sending off to get flow tested and cleaned, if nessesary that is.

ALright, need some input from you fellas. Recent issues:

Issue #1:
Brake lights would come on and stay on by themselves at some point during the night. Once, I would get into a car and press on a brake pedal they would turn off and still operate normally when the car is on.

Issue #2:
Alarm would go off randomly and doesn’t stop no matter what, till the battery dies. Happened several times and seems it has not come back again, yet…

Issue #3: <-Most urgent one!
Car does not start. Crank but no start. Used to happen 1 out of 10 starts, then more often. More prevalent when the car is still hot after a drive. And now it just would not start regardless of temperature. Cranks, but RPM needle does not move. Battery is almost new. Just replaced Fuel Filter, but the issue was still there, intermittent starts.
