They want recognition of achievements and awards from me.

I work in IT Operations. When was the last time someone in Ops received an official award/achievement for ensuring a company’s IT infrastructure continued to function while under-budget, under-staffed, with aging hardware and software because the company is to fucking cheap to spend any money on IT.

When was the last time anyone went to an IT Director and handed him/her an award for making sure the IT environment didn’t go down.

It’s a thankless industry. You’re only on an executive’s radar when shit hits the fan and you get yelled at. When everything is running well (which is no easy task), you’re completely ignored.

I don’t work in fucking marketing, or sales, or the medical field, or any countless industries that have awards for excellence.

Fucking academics. They’re so fucking high on themselves yet so fucking stupid, not understanding how the real world works.

Anyway, I just had to vent. Sorry. Nothing to see here.

It’s just lame (Both the fact that they’re asking, and the fact that IT doesn’t get enough recognition)

The only people in IT that I’ve seen get awards at my company are the Business Systems analysts.

And they get awards for just doing their job.

Work all night to fix a critical issue that would have prevented the company from issuing margin calls, potentially saving millions?

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Because you’re just an IT guy doing your job.

I’m still trying to figure out what these awards and achievements are. Are we talking about plaques or something?

If so, fuck that noise. I prefer to be congratulated with cold hard cash.

Axel, Have a few executives/senior management folks at your company write recomendation letters… Most schools will be OK with those in place of any kind of reward or trophy so to say…

Those letters are mandatory and they’ve already been submitted.

Yes, recognition, awards, plaques, whatever. For example, say you’re in marketing and you won an industry award for a commercial you worked on. Or you’re in sales and you won salesman of the year award at your company, or whatever.
