My First Mods: Muffler Delete and Cold air intake

I want to make a follow up post just to be clear.

To me all projects are cool single turbo twin turbo remote turbo electronic turbo heck even custom intake whatever. If your building your own kit or doing something in a combination. They are all cool to see and to watch. I have some of the biggest respect for guys who have tried things and failed espically when they show you the real results. because thats how people learn.

What I and I believe others dont like is the PES attitude or the B5 attitude. Thats where a new guy comes in and tries an old idea that has already shown its not a good idea. Then when the new guy hears the suggestions and warrnings from the others his response is calling them naive or haters. Only to go through the entire prosses getting the same lack luster results as in the past and looking like a fool in the prosses. Most of the time covering up for all the failures and all the setbacks but spending time working to try and prove this PES kit or turbo kit or whatever wasnt a failure. Never once will the “guy” give you the real deal. You will see lots of videos and dyno sheets and talk of how great the car is. Even tho most of what your seeing isnt really that great. The entire time your like wow ok another lame video where someone tries to make excuses and convince you there car is fast when it clearly isnt. We have seen this so many times over the years I think most are just board and have had enough. most of these “guys” seem to then slide away quietly or sell there car.

This isnt to say qdubs is a failure or his car or project is. It runs just like all the other remote turbo cars or turbo cars it performs just like the other ones have. Two years later we all know why the car hasnt gone to the track. does that mean this isnt something fun or neat no…But it explains why there are not more turbo cars or remote turbo cars and it also shows the community that was called Naive isnt so Naive.

Just like other projects with the wrong sized blower or turbo or whatever. The answer is more boost. Run more till the car responds or whatever. Sooner or later you can run enough boost to make the car faster but for how long and at what cost.

The projects are cool but if the people doing the projects are not the response to it wont be one of excitment.

Two years seems like a long time but you can have a lot of setbacks between life, work, family and waiting on parts/parts breaking. I have been building my S4 for 2 years and have just finally started to get everything dialled in. During that time, I have been to the drag strip once and only got 2 passes in, and been to the road course once. I would have more timeslips/lapping days, but I had one setback after another including blowing my flywheel out during the peak of the season last year and then at the time JHM was back ordered on their clutch and flywheel kits, waiting on parts is always a big one. Hell I am still waiting on nitrous parts to finish my install and it has been over two months (spark plugs are back ordered) :frowning:

Personally I don’t see any problem with revisiting old ideas and trying to improve them, some of the best products out there are revisions of existing products. If we don’t become innovative with existing technologies we might overlook something new and inventive. Remote turbos have potential but I don’t think it will ever touch a JHM kit simply because of the logistics and limitations of plumbing, tuning, the factory block limitations and the cost per hp of twin turbos… but in the end, he has a unique car that is one of the few remote turbo setup V8 S4’s around and to some that is worth the hassle, money and etc. Not everyone builds cars to go fast, I know a local guy with a dyno queen Stang GT pushing 1100 WHP, he won’t ever take it to the track because he doesn’t care what it can run, he just likes his dyno sheets and there is nothing wrong with that.

I don’t see any reason why its wrong for a person to try and rework a PES kit if they address the problems with it like the guy converting the MP90 into a MP110. To each their own, I doubt he will make the power or the performance level of a JHM stage 1, but he will have something unique that he built himself which is novel and cool.

I honestly don’t think the OP is out of line with his comments I was told this place was more neutral than AZ and that it was more technical focused and open minded and my experience and that of others that I know on here has been anything but. If anything, this place is very hostile to new ideas and if your’e not towing the AR company line your going to get flamed and negative rep.

I think he rubbed people the wrong way because like other users on here who have taken another path to what is accepted to be the " status quo", a lot of the OG users here don’t like it when people challenge their opinions and many consider themselves as being the final authority on everything Audi because they have been around for a long time and have some good time slips. I agree, why are people not more excited about a turbo V8? Its unique!. People said he would blow the engine, there is a stigma that these engines are fragile, he has been running a turbo for two years and the car appears to work fine and has not blown up.

There is so much focus here on what you can run in the 1/4 mile and if you don’t have time slips there is an attitude that you suck, your car sucks and why would you bother building it… I don’t mean that as a dig at anyone, but I think there is more to having a fast car than a fist full of good time slips. Case in point, I only managed a 13.50 last year at the drag strip, but that same car can run down Ferraris, Evo’s, STI’s, 911’s and etc on a real track.

I like different, innovation, process / product improvement. I also like to see results so his the track, any track quarter, eighth mile, road course, he’ll maybe even autoX just so what have some data and comparative data against other cars and hopefully audis as well. Good luck, and as always different strokes for different folks …but until the results I’ll be eating my popcorn :slight_smile:

no I think your missing the real issues for many here and trying to possibly pin that the close mindedness.

When you read his posts there is no sign of anyone being hostile. nobody knocked him for wanting to try this. Everyone seems to be open minded but for some I would assume the time ran out. Again two years after someone has told others just how naive they are and again when someone looks like they are desperate and not telling all the info. Come on. Two years but you post dyno info and say you have the car tuned for it to be safe and you have been driving it and your going to the track soon only to then show you need to put in a return fuel system and then you post videos and talk about how your logs show your car is fast. Come on thats not going to cut it anywhere. Sooner or later after you see the videos you get it… Watch the video and your like ohhhh ok now I see why you didnt go to the track yet…and you can site possible set backs but we dont see any of those listed… Why dont you see any listed. Because qdubs seems to be one of those guys. He isnt here to really tell the story he just dosent want to look wrong or Naive. When your hear for advancement and not just yourself you tell the good and thebad not just try to paint a picture of how great this is when everyone knows your hideing selveral things… So how can you give someone consideration for set backs for not getting to the track in two years when you only see good things posted. The fact is you cant and dont

personally. Qdubs dosent need to do anything. He dosent need to go to the track he doesnt need to prove anything. But when you call people Naive and prove the point your really Naive you might want to step back and adress that first. Dont post logs and then links to B5 stuff thinking anyone is not going to LOL LOL LOL at you because that seriously is a joke… I dont think most poeple care about qdubs or the project because almost nobody is going to do this. Its not practical its not faster then other options and its not appealing to many.

But…

There is no line here. Again check the guys VF build. Its not the norm but what a warm welcome he got and is getting. Look at the TTS supercharger builds. Not the norm but what a great welcome he gets and is getting. Look at some of the others and other platforms. If you go in the B8 section its APR and GIAC are a great company choise. You have people doing different but with an open and informative attitude… If you go into the TTS section it looks like 034… The theme is attitude and open minded but proven different in each section. Come here close minded with the intent on telling everyone how smart you are you better be that smart. When that dosent happen be prepaired to catch hell. Each sucuessful company that does well gets cheared.

The fact is there is no AR line other then a good attitude. If something is BS your going to hear it. Frankly I dont care what people build but i do care how they handle themselves and who they assocate with. And it appears so do many others.

So again. Nobody cares if qdubs or anyone builds something different. But if you have the wrong atttitude your going to get the wrong response. I think thats the case here.

Here is what I dont understand. Why dont you tell everyone what you have really been through all the issues you REALLY have had with the car and all the challanges you ran into.

If you actually told everyone all the stuff that you went though I think more people would be impressed.

I think its great not only going to but posting the results from the track. I have to say 9 times out of 10 you dont see that. Most of the guys with a hey look how smart I am and how easy this is end up never showing you anything and then they sell the car.

12.59 is nice to see. about middle of the road for what you would expect out of a boosted car.

in the end if its fun and its functional its a win. Good update.

I DID, in my other thread on AZ. It’s all in there. Hell there was even a point i spent $1500 with one tuner and a solid 10months before i finally heard “i dont know” and i just left and found another. That’s water under the bridge but yea as i’m sure SOME in this forum know, tuning an NA motronic ecu to “accept” forced induction has it’s unique set of hurdles: MAF limits, MAF diagnostic limits, fuel adaptation limits, component protection limits and a host of other road blocks, that really would have been a nightmare if i didnt find a DAMOS.

A lot of us dont read on the other forum. So you have to excuse me for that. I never saw it here.

In the end. The car runs and drives and its nice to see its running. long journey

Not sure on cracking 11s, but low 12s should be attainable with more practice. You’re still not done with your set up and improving things, correct?

if you turn up the boost enough to get into 11s that motor wont be long for tis world. we already know the limitations of the s4 4.2. you’re at the limit now of what she’ll handle reliably.

I think he’s a bit over said limit at 557whp 485lbft. Wasn’t it determined that 450whp was a safe # and at 500 that’s already pushing it. It would interesting to see long term affects of such power.
