Hello all. While driving down the road today, randomly I had EPC, TMS, Brake, and Check engine lights all come on at once.

Ran a scan from obdeleven and these were the results. The headlight and window regulator issues were pre-existing. The other 7 faults are new from whatever happened today. Car runs but barely. Idle is uneven reving up and down almost stalling. Any ideas?

Before I start tossing out ideas, how old is the battery?

OK, assumning your battery is good:

The P1653 says to check the ABS module, the ABS module 01314 says the ECU has a comms problem (most entries talk about wiring/electrical issues) which could just reflect codes being stored in Engine 2. The engine 2 code P3028, based on the reading I have done (specific to the throttle error) suggests two things to check:

  1. Since you have two, swap them left to right and see if the problem follows the swap or stays on the same side

  2. If it stays, then you need to look at the wiring. I have read reports where the connector “loosens” and no longer feeds the sensor portion back to the ECU.

Have you cleared codes to make sure they are not transient? You can do a TB alignment in case it is just an adaptation thing with a VCDS:

If you have someone close by with a VCDS that might be something you could try. There are also posts about getting to hidden menus on some versions of the MMI to check battery voltage. You can do some googling if that interests you.

If it were me, I would:

  1. Confirm the battery health
  2. Clear the codes and verify they return
  3. Check the connection on Throttle 2
  4. Swap the throttles

See, I cleared the codes after it happened and they came back. It was late yesterday so I didn’t mess with it. Started the car up today after clearing the codes again and nothing came back this time. That makes me lean more towards the loose connection somewhere in my mind.
I will definitely check all those ideas out though. It’s a great place to start which is exactly what I needed.

I’m glad to hear they are not back, but they probably will be. I agree about the connection being a good candidate to check. The connection to the TB has 6 wires, I think two are related to sending the position signal back to the ECU, though electrics is one of my weakest points on vehicles.

And yes they are back. Had more time today to do some digging while the codes were active and after much playing around in obdeleven, I found that there is no communication to the brakes module (03). Where is the brake module on the S6 or connectors specifically related to that module 03? I believe I have narrowed it down to a bad connection with this module or maybe the module itself is failing intermittently.

Are you saying the Engine faults are gone, but the ABS module fault exists?

I still get same codes but I was looking into each module and brakes 03 has no communication with the car or obdeleven. If that’s not communicating to other modules I assume it could cause errors from the other modules that may need data like wheel speed. Tpms. Abs. Etc … Or is that a poor assumption?

One of the things I read was that if you had an ECU fault, then the ABS module would give you a failed reading. (That was the 01314 reading I spoke about in an earlier post). Now I am no expert in everything OBDII, but since the real error was the throttle error, I would be focusing on that (assuming you are still getting it).

If you are still getting the throttle angle error I would suggest swapping the two and see if the problem stays with the one it was already getting a CEL on or if it moves to the other side. At least that’s probably what I would do.

I was fighting the same issue with that damn EPC light and limp mode. Mine was the Throttle Body connectors. Replaced the connector heads with some I found on amazon (they are even sold in packs of two!) and everything’s been golden since then.

I’ve been getting these codes, intermittently (see Intermittent codes - diagnose electrical or mechanical problem?):

P0221 - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch “B” Circuit Range/Performance
P0221 - Throttle Position Sensor B (G188), Circuit Range / Performance
P1564 - Throttle Actuator (J338), Under-Voltage during Basic Setting

Were they the same as yours? Would a change of connectors be a likely solution?

I think one of the easier things to do (at least for me since I hate those connectors) would be to swap the throttles. You would know immediately if you have a throttle problem or something outbound of the throttle (wiring, etc).

I found that using some electrical contact cleaner fixed the problem temporarily, but the codes would come back. I saw a thread somewhere talking about how crappy the connectors were and how replacing them fixed the problem they were having.
