New Android Dynavin installed. Wow!

I dont think your the minority. I dont think people like the iphone so much as they like APPLE products.

This vid is still as pertinant today as it was over a year ago with the EVO

^^^ LOL!

I like my HTC Inspire, battery life sucks (needs to be charged daily) but other than that it’s a great phone.

LOL. Overall, it’s nice. I think it’ll be even nicer when I get a new rooted firmware from one of the community members. Faster bootup times, more nicely bundled apps and more control over the Android side. Hopefully, with the rooted firmware, I might be able to get my turbostick to work too. Until then, I use my BB’s mobile hotspot function.

The GPS antenna did crap out on me though. I haven’t looked at the issue yet as it’s behind the cluster. The vendor I bought it from said it has happened once or twice before and told me to simply get another off ebay and that they’d cover the expense.

I also get some alternator whine. Have to check whether it’s properly grounded. If it is, then I’ll buy a $7 power filter. Initially, I thought I needed a ground loop isolator but it’s a power whine so I’ll return the ground loop isolator I bought.

I installed Sygic for offline navigation. Works well so no complaints there. Google Maps and Google Navigation work great as well when I want to use Internet connectivity.

Overall, I’m liking it a lot.

Axel,

may I ask how much the unit was, and did you get it locally or order it in?

Cheers,
Sascha

I ordered it from caraudiocraze (support@caraudiocraze.com). Ask for Trent. Pricing changes based on availability as they sell real fast (I got a deal cause I put a deposit and waiting 2 and a half months). You’ll need to talk to Trent and get a quote from him. They’re not the only guys that sell them in the states but I liked their customer service.

That thing is pretty slick Axel, definitely the most advanced headunit for a car I have seen thus far. I do like that it can do WiFi and live Google maps! Do you know if it stores all of the map data on the unit or does it have to connect to the internet to get that data as you drive?

Cool thanks for that.

Have you noticed any cross-talk between sources? Their previous units were notorious for that (ie. you could hear the radio when playing from a CD/ipod, etc).

Also how is the screen in direct sunlight?

No cross-talk. However, alternator whine is prominent. Need to add a filter for that.
As for sunlight, I haven’t removed the protective screen cover yet as I’ll need to radio removed again for the filter etc. so I can’t really tell. Haven’t really run into issues though. However, I do have tinted windows.

IIRC it’s just like Google Maps on your phone. i.e. you need data during use although there are some ways kicking around to preload the data, I just haven’t tried them yet. I looked at it this way - I use Google Maps as my primary nav device, all you’re doing with the dynavin is displaying it on an in car device.

Slick unit all round. I got my RNS-E on ebay for less than the dynavin. Until then, I was waiting for this unit. Not surprised at all it’s a hot seller.

Yeah, it’s like a phone. So you need data (although I’ve heard rumours you can cache some map data somehow). I also have Sygic for offline navigation with the maps installed on a micro sd card.
We’re not allowed to drive and use our phones here and honestly, I don’t like doing it either.

Interesting, I am curious how that would work if you went from the US to say Mexico or Canada, would you be charged exorbitant data charges?

I am going to look into this for my car. How is the integration with the DIS display? Is it as good as a RNS-E?

I believe you would be charged roaming fees. I use my cell phone’s mobile hotspot so if my cell phone is in another country, then roaming applies. That’s why I also have an offline nav system installed.

As for the DIS display, it’s not as good. It won’t show the mp3 you’re playing unless you’re using the non-android side which has a crap music player so I play my music through the android half of the system. The same goes with the nav. Basically, anything that uses the android half doesn’t use the DIS display. The only non-android half of the system I use is the phone and radio and even then, maybe once in a blue moon. I really only got the system for the android capabilities.

Sky’s the limit with that Android dynavin. I’d use my Android phone as a wifi hotspot like you. Then I’d install Skype on the dynavin - how about in car video calling? Lol.

have you tried streaming music with slacker on the head unit?

No, I don’t really listen to radio, even internet radio. I might give it a shot though.

Axel- do you still use this? What’s the long term verdict?

I had to send it in for warranty due to some wifi connection issues. Actually got it back last Thursday but they forgot to include the connecting harness. I’m therefore waiting for it in the mail. Once I get it, I’ll plug it back in and see if everything is fixed. I didn’t get a good look at the unit (when I noticed the cable was missing, I put everything back in the box and put it aside) but it seems they may have simply replaced the entire unit so I may have simply gotten an early faulty model (I hear their latest models are better).

Will update once it’s back in the car and I’ve had more time with it.

Whom did you buy it from? Caraudiocraze or somewhere else?

Yeah, CarAudiCraze (Trent).

They’ve been great and we’ve both been patient. He had no issues taking the unit back for warranty and shipping it back to me. He’s helped me out a bit. When the GPS antenna failed, he told me to buy one and he’d refund what I paid and so forth.

Dynavin didn’t seem to have any issues taking my unit back for warranty either. They just forgot to include the harness when they shipped it back which is quite annoying. Trent is following up with them to get me a harness.
