new member 2010 S6

Hey guys, I think I have found my home. Was invited to join here by v8a6.

Got my 2010 S6 CPO 1 year ago. Been in the shop a couple times, still love it.

Currently in for a CEL and likely carbon issues. A little scared since the dealer is saying they won’t cover any carbon cleaning with the CPO (not that unexpected) but also that it will cost $5k (!!) because if they ‘touch any carbon’ they will want to replace all the injectors.

Anyway, I will scour this forum to try get up to speed. Glad to be here!

Welcome to AudiRevolution!!!

When you have the time, it might be a good idea to pull all your codes and post them. We have some Expert level Techs on the site, who might be able to tell you how to approach the situation with the dealership.

I find it pretty ridiculous that they are refusing to troubleshoot the CEL on your car, until it is gone, consideringit is CPO.

Well they flushed ‘4 gallons of fuel cleaner’ into it and cleared the CEL. My service guy (whom I used to like a lot) is saying this is what they are being told to do by Audi America tech. I know the CEL is coming back on probably within days of picking up the car. He strongly suspects it is a carbon issue since there are misfires on most or all cylinders.
Thing is I don’t mind picking up the tab for a carbon clean. But he is saying they won’t cover the injectors and 10 of those will run the bill up to $5-6k. Never heard anything about needing injectors replaced before.
Anyone know a good indy Audi garage in the Boston area?

My car, 2007, and it’s previous owner were told the same by the local Audi dealership. I’ve since had it carbon cleaned for a LOT less and after several tanks of gas with SeaFoam I’m down to one misfire in one cylinder and it happens less than once a week, sometimes longer.

I’m in the process of having the intake manifold and power steering pump replaced under warranty and will probably pay for an injector while we are in there. But 1 at around $100 for parts is much better than 10!

Find a good indy mechanic stat, the dealer will try and replace everything and it’s not necessary when warranty won’t cover it.

Welcome home.

I would suggest that you have a indy shop do a good carbon clean. It will be about 500$ after that they don’t have to touch any carbon. I would get what your dealer is telling you righting. It seems like each dealer makes up there own rules and there is no standards for what Audi will cover. Many other guys here have been carbon cleaned under COPO so I don’t know why you wouldn’t be. I know it might take a little extra leg work but call audi of America customer service. They are good at helping in these cases. If your honest and open they have helped people replace motors that shouldn’t have been replaced.

You paid a lot of money for the car and now your having issues. I would push the issue with the dealer. After all you paid. If that falls through we can all always help you out if you need it

Hi AK

Have you tried removing the oil filler cap with the engine running?

I had the CEL with multiple misfires and it was pressure related, easy to diagnose as it’s difficult to remove the cap.

Hi mate,

Welcome

In my opinion, having done both the carbon clean and injector replacement, you should not pay more than ~$700 in labour for the carbon clean, and I know for certain that you should not pay more than $125 per injector.

In fact I can sell them for less than that (and they are in stock). The part code you want is 06E906036C.

The Audi carbon cleaning fluid them put in your intake does next to nothing. It will remove ‘oily’ deposits, but the fact is that the carbon gets baked on so hard you would think it is plastic.

Seafoam can do even less, as it’s applied through the injectors and doesn’t ever touch the carbon on the valves.

Cheers,
Paul

Good lookin Paul. And great points. Fuel treatment only effects the inside of the fuel system injectors included. When the carbon spreads fuel treatment won’t do anything but maybe clean the tips of the injectors that could possibly have carbon buildup

Not to hijack this thread, but since we’re on the topic, my car is juuuuust about to cross 100k miles this week, and I still have not had a single CEL in almost 10k miles of ownership. Do you guys think I should spring for a carbon cleaning anyways, even though it doesn’t seem to need it? I would like to avoid paying $500-700 for something unnecessary, unless you guys feel like I should do it anyways given that I have no idea when/if it was done last.

Yes the sooner the better. Carbon isn’t something that might happen. It’s going to happen. Carbon management is something you want to be very aware of and active about.

You will see lots of threads on the effects of going too long without a carbon clean

Thanks everyone for all the input. Got my car back yesterday and sure enough the problem was multiple random mis fires on multiple cylinders. Fuel cleaner added. Recommend carbon cleaning if CEL comes back on. Not covered under warranty.

Of course within 5 minutes and one push the CEL cam back on. My baby feels wheezy, weak and no power. I have found a local indy garage that has some great reviews: rayteam. I spoke to the owner and he seemed well acquainted with the carbon cleaning process and quoted around $750 (he said they use the walnut shell technique which I believe is the way to go?). And he said, like others here, that injectors should only be $125 each. I am optimistic that this guy can take care of my baby.

Now…while I’m there I wonder if I should take advantage and get some other stuff done…how do people feel about a resonator delete? I am too cheap to go full out with a new exhaust per se and the sound is already awesome. Will that void any warranties (I still have another year of CPO). Air intakes?

Oh one other thing. I changed my grill to the RS6 mesh grill. Got it off ebay. Looks great, anyone else done this?

The res delete will make your exhaust louder. Check out PatS6’s exhaust, as he has tested a few different configs, to give you an idea of what it will sound like.

When you are ready to go full exhuast, let me know. We are working on a new exhaust for the S6 that is actually designed specifically for the car, instead of just an A6 4.2 exhaust with different tips (i.e. Milltek)

The res delete is good for a little sound. Just make sure it’s done well or you can get flagged if a tech sees that if you have a warranty concern. For now your car is stock and your under warranty I would skip the intake. Just consider a k&n filter replacement

While the manifold is off, have it inspected (but don’t open it up) to make sure all the flaps are working correctly! If you can get it replaced while still under warranty, that will be the way to go.

This is absolute bullshit. I had the same issue with my 2010 S6, and although I had to pay for the carbon clean my dealer got all ten injectors replaced under warranty after the carbon clean (and replacing the intake - also covered by warranty) didn’t resolve the issue. I would sdvise against going to the Indy for your non-warranty-covered work, because that will be a reason for Audi to not cover additional work. My dealership worked with Audi tech every step of the way, and that ensured that the big ticket items were covered.

I’ll be posting my service records soon. Hang in there, and don’t go Indy until your CPO warranty is gone. Just find a dealer that isn’t charging those outrageous bullshit prices. I paid ~$700 for the carbon clean, and the (warranty covered) price for ten fuel injectors was around $3k. The dealership you’re working with is gouging you up the ass.

Update:

Found an indy guy who is willing to do the carb clean. He is worried about the injectors and has me putting in lots of Moby fuel cleaner for 400 miles or so before re-running the codes. He made it sound like it is hard to tell whether an injector needs to be replaced or not and maybe you end up doing all 10. Some posts made me worried about going indy because he sounded like we could do carb clean and all injectors and then still get a CEL. And then it could end up being coil packs or whatever…

Anyway then I called another dealer and spoke to someone in service. She ran my VIN and said she didn’t see any reason why a manual carb clean wouldn’t be covered and we made an appointment. Excuse me WTF? The total opposite from the other dealer (In writing on my bill: CARBON CLEANING IS NOT A COVERED REPAIR). I don’t get this at all. I thought they just call Audi tech and they are told what to do.

So at this point I am confused, a little pissed off and of course cautiously optimistic this may all be covered.

good stuff

you can send injectors out for a cleaning/testing. I think it’s pretty cheap too. They send you a report on each one etc. Of course you may have to replace those little parts that are one time use and a pain to find. Maybe ask JHM. But it will at least save you from buying 10 injectors if you only need 3. Or 0.

ok I put the car in at a new dealer today

after I explained the situation the service rep made a phone call “are manual carbon cleans covered under CPO”, guy on other end said yes as long as CEL is on…so we will see! she said the other dealer probably just didn’t want to expend the labor, her garage guys love to do it since it takes many hours and they get paid for it. go figure.

anyway they gave me an S4 loaner. what a little beast? I had the previous S4 with the 4.2 V8. This version is totally fdifferent, this is one tight little car, great transmission, love those tight gear shifts and down shifts. Fast as hell. Sounds ok but I suspect the exhaust tone is piped into the cockpit and it is louder inside than outside. Put a smile on my face though.

I see so many around though, I think I just thought of the other thing I love most about my S6, others have mentioned it too. Exclusivity and rarity. and the V10 badge.

funny, the new S4 is way bigger than the old one. Handles better so it feels smaller than it is. Also has a small engine that wheezes so that too.

B67 = 180.6" long
B8 = 185.5" long

that’s basically like the C5 A6

Great to hear about the cc. If you can request before and after pictures you will be happy you did.

Funny fact about the s4 your driving. They actually play exhaust sounds through the speakers. LOL no joke. They actually play exhaust sounds through the speakers.
