New RS5 Road Trip

Gents,
About to start a 1200 mile road trip with 2015 RS5 with less than 200 miles on it. Will advise if anyone interested. Has anyone done APR’s ECU tune on their RS5? Thanks.

Honestly man, save your money and warranty until a tune with substantial gains comes out.

Do you really feel it’s worth it to spend $799 to go .16 seconds faster and pick up a measly 1.5mph? and void you warranty and go with a company you weren’t really happy with.

APR isn’t known for making any power with NA engines, that is a fact.

Enjoy the car as is and explore the possibility of power adders a little down the road. The difference between an S and RS model should keep you pretty happy for a while and you just bought a whole new beast compared to the S4. If I did anything to that car it would be opening up the exhaust and so far all of those offerings suck. The first shop I would contact is Fast Intentions to see if they have anything in the works or if they are interested in getting an RS5 exhaust together.

PICS!!

Congrats again, Sky. But definitely listen to euro here. It makes zero (0) sense to buy that APR tune - and in the process destroy your warranty.

Just wait to see if JHM gets in the game at some point.

Congrats on the new car Sky. I gotta say that I’m definitely jealous. I agree with Euro and Clochner. Enjoy the car as it is for now and wait for some real development with the car’s performance aftermarket before jumping in. Now that your NA, you’re not going to get as much out of a tune and it definitely wouldn’t be worth ruining my factory warranty right out of the gate. I’d maybe consider getting some lightweight wheels for some added performance without ruining the warranty.

Definitely post pics!

Hell yeah for pics, I’m actually disappointed he didn’t start the thread with a pic.

Oh what a great way to break in and enjoy the new RS5. Take pictures along the way. It might be fun and you probably will find some really great opportunities to show off the car with new landscape. A member on here did that when he got his allroad. It was very cool.

Another neat thing that just happened in this thread. Sky remember all the guys telling you stick with APR and that for your b8 S4 APR was very good. Sometimes people think this site is a bunch of APR fan boys. No we all are a bunch of car guys who know what is good and what is a waste. Now that you have a different car your getting different advice for that car. Some of the same guys who told you to stick with APR for your b8 S4 are telling you not to get APR for your RS5 that’s because Jhm is by far the only company that you would want to look at for the performance side. And all the guys on this site really are about looking out for the members.

Enjoy the ride home send us some pictures and before you get too comfortable take that monster for a rip down the 1/4 mile when you get back home and settled

Agree. How hard is it to snap a pic to post. I say pics or it didn’t happen

Gents, understand all, sorry about the pictures. I’m now on the road, computer at home has an issue and laptop I have with me suffers from poor operator technique. Car is definitely an Autobahn cruiser. Could sit at 120 all day with no problems. At 78 mph engine is turning 2700 RPM compared to my S4 2100. Guess to keep engine in a more responsive rpm zone. The reason I asked about the APR ECU is because in D mode the throttle takes excessive movement to downshift to a lower gear and then some times will jump down 2 gears. Of course switching to S will solve the problem but then the opposite is true, stays in gears too long. Maybe the transmission has to “learn”(?) my driving technique…if it can. 23.7 MPG with 60 mph average. Wonderful machine, thanks for your patience.

^ Wow. Gearing and mileage is significantly different than RS4.

Best I ever got on a full tank of gas (long road trip) was 20.2 mpg. And this was all highway miles, creeping at ~65 to 70 mph.

60 vs 70 is pretty significant

I test that once in a while (60 vs. 70 vs. 80) to see where it really ramps up. It’s interesting.

Best I ever had on an RS4 trip was 350 miles for 61 litres, and that included some town driving as well as a bunch of highway (90% highway). That’s 350/16.1 = 21.7 MPG. That’s actual like your fuelly calcs. I think skywagon is using the on board computer.

On teh RS4 80 mph = 3200 RPM or so in 6th. I love to bitch about that. I’d rather see it more like 2200-2400.

^ There you go. RS4 guys need a 7th gear.

We’ve spoken before about 5th being a wasted ratio. Never use it. If 6th were a deep overdrive we’d use 5th as the current 6th and happily have our highway gear. Oh well.

My parents 1992 Corvette was set up that way and it was perfect. 1-5 were tight, and 6th was crazy long. 130km/h = 1300rpm. If redline in 6th were possible you’d be going 440km/h. There you go. What was funny was flooring it in 6th. The car would begin to shudder pretty strongly and you wouldn’t accelerate whatsoever.

I think the 4th gen Camaros have a really low 6th too.

I don’t really mind the high gearing on the RS4… other than the ridiculous highway mileage.

Although, the car I came from (2005 STi) had very similar ratios to the RS4. I loved the high ratios on the twisties, and wished they were longer on straight lines.

1st 3.636
2nd 2.375
3rd 1.761
4th 1.346
5th 0.971
6th 0.756

Well I made it, about 850 miles in two days. Finally had a chance to open the car up a little and learned a lot. Yesterday traffic was awful, multi car crash sure slows one down! Simply learning gas pedal travel was an accomplishment. Learning to drive in Sport mode when off highway. Got on it coming onto an expressway, found myself doing over 100 mph before I knew it. Where the S4 starts to go flat at about 60-70 mph the RS5 starts to push you back in the seat. I’d wager this thing could hit it’s alleged top speed of 174? Today saw 23.7 mpg, 65 mph average, yes all off on board computer. FWIW when I was a kid, yes long ago, 60 mph used to spin the engines at about 3000 rpm…gas was cheap!! Thanks

That’s some awesome feedback sky.

With the transmission give it and you time to learn each other. The transmission will learn but you need more city driving to let that happen. And you will adjust not the power curve. It’s a great experience to go from a very well nodded supercharged car to a high strung na car.

I know we all like to see lower revs on the dash when driving. For the RS4 guys I know Jhm has a taller 6th gear for the S4 check to see if it will fit something for the RS4. Also remember in most cases the revs are placed at that point deliberately as some calculation needs to go into the weight of the car wind drag and motor tq curve. Sometimes a motor runs better a slightly higher rpm range at certain speeds.

You sir are correct. I couldnt get my 4th gen camaro over 2500 rpm on sixth.

And was 60mph at exact rev limiter in 2nd? That’s another trick Chevy was using to come up with good 0-60 times at least back in the '92.

I wonder what my car’s stock 0-60 time would be if it reached 60mph rather than 69mph at 7000rpm in second.
