Found this article to be interesting. Cool interactive tool as well.
interesting
consumer reports did a study on flat panel tv size and found that screen size was directly correlated with customer happiness. Biggest lament? WIsh my screen was bigger.
Phones are very similar. Operating your phone with one hand as they advocate testing for in that article basically means you are either using your phone in one hand while jerking off…or using your phone while driving. Neither should be the important determinant of your size choice.
If it can be portable, that’s where you draw the line. If it’s too big like an ipad mini where you need a murse to carry it, doesn’t work. Maybe the Samsung Mega is approaching that. But the Samsung Note 1,2,3 are all perfectly fine in my breast pocket of my suits, or my jeans pockets or in my hand pockets of coats. I never say ‘wish this was smaller’ when watching a video, using the touch keyboard to type, or reading an email or article. Never. I am always greatful for size.
Definitely agree with the results of that study. Several years ago I bought a 50" Pioneer plasma TV, and to this day I regret not spending the extra grand or so and going with the 60".
My Note3 has been amazing, I have an otter box for use while on job sites, take it off on the weekends, fits my pocket easily, battery life and speed are both amazing.
for the concern about not being able to reach the input area with one hand operation the Samsung phones have an option for that whwre it shrinks tge keyboard to the right or left.
Samsung one hand operation keyboard vs SwiftKey full keyboard
I use one hand all the time (and not referencing saki’s use comment lol). But commonly txt with only one hand, and read tapatalk with one hand.
I do look forward to some more screen real estate though, but I’m sure I’ll miss the convenience of one handed operations.
Anyone here getting one of the new iPhones? I have a 4S and need to upgrade. Thinking about pre-ordering the 6. The Plus just seems too big - and I already have an ipad
^smart man there.
Clochner get the 6plus
It will seem really big for a week, and then you will wonder how you lived without a good sized screen.
I used to think like you when I had a blackberry and got a Samsung s2 which was 4.5". Then after a week I realized it wasn’t a big deal. Then I got a Samsung note (5.3") and thought it again for two weeks… Then realized I couldn’t go back to a ‘small’ 4.5" phone.
Now I have a Samsung note 3 and love the size.
The 6plus is almost the same size as my note 3 (I believe it is 5.5" vs the note3 at 5.7")
When I first got it, I realized how useless tablets were…THAT is too big and annoying to handhold. But it’s useful because you can actually see stuff vs the old little phones (like your 3.5" 4s or my old blackberry torch). We got a tablet right when they came out and loved it.
But…the reason you use your ipad now is because your iPhone is useless for things like Internet etc. It’s just way too small. When you’re sitting on the couch, or in the living room, you can just whip out your 6plus instead of using a tablet.
Once you get a proper sized phone, you will find it so nice for Google searches, typing is easier because the bigger keyboard, reviewing a video or showing someone a photo…all of these things are fantastic. And it is portable. Fits in any pocket you ha e unless you wear super low waist girl style skinny jeans from 2013.
So if you guys remember I got the note 3 in January. I had it for 3 months before it got stolen. At first I was all about the switch, and then the shortcuts I had grown to love with iPhones no longer worked. So after that I bought a 5s which helped with my need for a better battery, and I mean much better. From what I’ve seen the 6 and 6+ both last twice as long as the 5s so that’s awesome. Knowing that I preordered a 6+ on Friday. In the end, Apple phones are much more user friendly and the internet browsing is much more enjoyable for me. Yeah the Android phones have some cool features like 2 apps on 1 screen and a stylus, but I found myself to never use those things. I’m looking forward to the 6+. I ordered it from apple.com and it said the phone would ship in 3-4 weeks which I’m guessing is an over estimate. When I ordered my 4s after it already went on sale it said the same thing and I had it less than 2 weeks later.
Good points. Hit the nail on the head regarding iPad vs. iPhone utilization. I will upgrade my 5S to a 6 Plus early next year when I hit my 2 year mark (where my office pays for it).
My spouse, like clochner, still has a 4S. I’ll probably upgrade her just so I can play with the new toy… but she is a throwback to the days when Motorola and Nokia ruled. Text messages, pictures, and basic calendar functions are all she really uses. I’m still trying to convince her to give up her Garmin. [insert facepalm smiley here]
Haha right after posting last night about ordering the 6, I watched Apple’s keynote speech from a few days ago. I changed my mind after the presentation and ordered the Plus. Arriving in a few weeks.
Very excited.
weird…those things you said…I’ve heard the total opposite from just about everyone I’ve ever spoken to
internet - safari? Do you use Safari on your home computer? No, you use Firefox or Chrome. ON an Android you can do the same. Why? Because safari kinda sucks
battery life - wait…so you’re saying Apple 5s battery life is much better than the Note 3? Come on…now I know you’re joking around. I use the fuck out of my phone (note 3) and my battery life is fantastic. I also hear nothing but moaning from the Apple 5S people I know.
As for 6 being ‘twice as good as 5’ for battery life, you can’t forget that you have a HUGE screen now, and the big screen will be hard on the battery. So while it may be twice as big a battery, it won’t mean twice the life, because the screen itself will be more than double the draw.
^ you have to trust Apple regarding the additional battery life.
6+/6 batteries are twice as good as the 5s which probably still won’t be as good as the note 3 but that battery was overkill for me. If I can get through a day I’m good. Yeah I do use safari on iPhone but never on a desktop or laptop. I always use chrome otherwise. The browsing has to do with the shortcuts. Swiping to go forward and backward and tapping the top to scroll to the top are just 2 seemingly small things that I really missed. Then there are also responsive sites, sites that change styles based on screen size, that don’t go into mobile site mode because the screen is too big. Then there was this application, my magazine or something, that I didn’t use and couldn’t remove from the note 3 that was constantly crashing for some reason and there was nothing that could be done about it. There are a bunch of other small things that add up to a lot. Emails were also screwy iirc.
yes, you do have to trust apple. And you shouldn’t lol
there’s one item on the list that they claim (under ideal circumstances) is double the life, and that’s audio only. So as long as your iphone 6 plus 5.5" screen is turned off, yes you will get double the life.
Last time I checked, you need the screen. So no, that’s completely irrelevant that statistic. Great trick though on structuring the chart. People often just look at the top line on a list like that. Maybe mdubz did too.
they are not. Look at the chart. 5s to 6 = identical battery life for the most part. 10% difference at best and where it counts…pretty much equal (wifi, LTE, Video).
5s to 6plus for 3g talk and browising is way better…but last time I checked nobody uses 3G (besides Apple 4 users) lol
Want LTE? You get a 20% bump in battery power. Wifi? 20%.
What if you run your screen nice and bright? uh oh…
Truth is it’s a modest bump over a shit battery situation (5s). I reckon the wall-hugger joke will continue to be a relevant commercial for Samsung

I didn’t see that chart. I was trying to stream the conference at work but the network kept dropping it. Definitely doesn’t look like 2 times as good all around but it’s enough for me. I’m happy with the 5s life so the 6+ will be fine I’m sure. The problem with my 4s was the 1.5 hours of actual use before the battery dying. I’ve used my phone that much today already and I’m at 89%. The note 3 would be at 95%
My spouse’s 4S would die in ~4 hours, until I showed her how to shutdown apps, stop apps from updating in the background, and only allow certain apps to use gps. Now she gets a full day out of it. There are some simple tutorials on the 'net how to extend battery life… unless you are one of the unlucky ones that got a shit battery.
My 5S lasts less than 2 days on a full charge, with all the tricks. Not very good. I’ve learned to live with it by keeping charging cables at work, home, car, and my travel kit. (It actually has the worst battery life of any phone I’ve ever owned.)
